MAHINDRA UPDATE - Roothy
Mahindra testing one year later!
Righto, we've done a few things to our Mahindra Pik Up - still lots more to go! - and used it for what we intended a bit too this last year. It's only got 25,000km on the clock but we're really enjoying it. Anyway here's a clip that explains some of what we've done - and there's another on it's way that's got more details on the modifications, including the power upgrade, and my association with the new Ryebuck products that I'm involved with.

Here in South Africa they are taking the market by storm and most people that drive them are happy with them. I personally have a SUV but still very happy with it at almost 300k kms. Enjoy your vehicle and safe journeys!

There is something very refreshing about a person who does not engage in the Toyota vs. Land Rover/other manufacturer nonsense. The best vehicle is the one you choose. I hope you both continue to enjoy your travels with your Mahindra. It certainly seems to be bringing you much joy already in getting you to the places you want to visit and enjoy. That, at the end of the day, is what is important.. Safe and happy journeys!

I just received a 10k bill to fix my Amarok out of warranty and now I'm really considering one of these, something that is cheap to fix and that I can service at home when the warranty ends. And something that doesn't have a gazillion sensors that fail (expensively). Hence why I landed on your video. Out of interest what are the biggest tires you can put on with the 40mm Mahindra lift?
@JOHNROOTHROOTHY
@JOHNROOTHROOTHY Год назад
Amarok - voted number one by tilt tray drivers - I'm not sure on the tyres, weird stud size means I'm still looking for GOOD steel wheels with a bit of width (not the cheap ones....) - it'll happen!
@FourLowAdventures
@FourLowAdventures Год назад
@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY The Amarok is great when it runs but it feels like a huge liability now that could sting me any time. Do you know what Mahindra is like with replacement parts? I.e. will they charge you a thousand dollars to replace a mirror and this sort of thing? I'm also considering a Jeep because it's naturally aspirated and they have a huge supply of aftermarket parts from the USA. I want a 10-15 year vehicle, not a 5 year disposable one.

Roothy, you've hit the jackpot with the Mindy, mate! I have an S6 like yours called the Karoo. It's brilliant! I've had to spend money on maintenance on the standard shocks over horribly potholed, corrugated and washed out tracks over 140 000km's. In retrospect, it's not juch for the abuse it's suffered at all. The ultra reliable drive train has not missed a beat. And it flies! It's no slouch on the freeways at all! It returns around 8.5 l/100km religiously and has carted instruments for river catchment work, musical instruments at notoriously muddy festivals for the last 4 years unfailingly and puling all sorts of vehicles from 5 ton builders trucks to Toyota 4x4's including landcruisers all over Southern Africa. Best vehicle I've ever owned or operated bar none. Next step is Camil coilover shocks and a canopy. I'd love a steel winch bar but never had to use a winch yet in all my travels. A hi-lift is a must though and possibly a chainblock. I have terrafirma rt's on mine and they're first class. I've fitted Monroe standard shocks but they're not up to the pounding on deep bush corugations and rocks. Love my Mindy and have no plans to swap it out. A canvas canopy and cattle rails would also be nice... Kind regards from KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.

Great to see you finally put out another video! Many of us have been waiting patiently for this. I for one, would love to see you and the Mahindra on some (all) of the tracks you have covered. The Mahindra is looking great and nice to hear that it's holding up well. My Highlux suffers the same drop in fuel economy when traveling over 90kph. One thing about "wind resistance" is that when you double your speed, the resistance doesn't double, it quadruples! That's why the fuel economy suffers at higher speeds. Anyway, who wants to travel fast, you miss out on the views when you do. Please don't keep us wait for so long for your next video! All the best!

Looking good. I know what you mean about rigging up something that works whilst waiting to discover a good permanent solution. Painted steel wheels are definitely better in my book than alloys. If a steel wheel takes a dent which causes air to leak out, you can jam a rag between the wheel and tyre to support the tyre and keep the air in. The same impact on an alloy wheel could easily result in a crack or complete fracture.

Just in case you aren't aware, you now need to be really up front about freebies and sponsorships etc. For example, you mentioned that you were approached by the roof top tent mob to get their upgraded model. It would probably have been wise to spell it out....by stating that either they gave it to you free, or you decided to buy one at full retail price. Roothy, I recall back in early 2000s you were restoring a old Viscount Caravan. What ever became of that project? I recall laughing to myself when you kept referring to Karen as the "Handbrake", always holding you back. Loved it. Aside from that, I have to say you couldn't have found a better camp to settle in and explain your choices, then kick back and soak up the location, impending sunset, but primarily what a location to snuggle up, yeah been there done that too 😆, K'gari west coast, yeah! Now I'm sorta gobsmacked you are having difficulties determining how you want to set this thing up. I'd thought a guy with your experience would have had a grand plan prior to selecting your truck. You would have some of the best contacts in the business, why not utilise them. In regard to batteries, charging etc. I'm a fanatic of Itech lithium. Why, well it appears to be really good product at an affordable price, something Joe average like me can afford. Have them in the Patrol, 3 X 54 amp (162 amp) auxiliary, 1 X cranking/winch, 1 X 120 amp in caravan. Yes they are affordable. You should approach them. I'm a RTT convert also, it is truly the way to go, so simple to setup, pack down. Takes the drama out of camping, crawling round, rolling/folding, lifting, storing etc. We selected the press button Bundutop as we are aged & wanted truly easy. Push up button, 18seconds it's erected. Likewise, press down, 15 seconds, stop, tuck in exposed canvas, press down, latch up, drive off, can't get any simpler than that. So pleased to see you back, have missed Mahindra updates. Keep these up, regards.
@JOHNROOTHROOTHY
@JOHNROOTHROOTHY Год назад
G'day Ian - funny thing was by the time I'd finished the Viscount the family had grown up and there wasn't room for me! So I had to swag it under the awning. We sold it locally and put the money into a Trackabout camper which did great service until all the kids were sleeping in their own swags - Karen and I aren't vanners, we like to camp real bush and like our camping as camping. Re set up - don't be gob smacked, I've neve set up a new vehicle, just built my own stuff and then copped whatever sponsors were giving away - so this time around I'm taking my time and looking hard at all alternatives. And right now, having been downsizing from the farm, I needed tray space as much as anything. So once we're thru all that I'll get it sorted - but slowly, because I don't o anything in a hurry, apart from beer.... The Handbrake says hello - it was all her idea to be honest....

@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY Oh, wasn't aware of moving, guess some things just aren't shared. Why did I remember the caravan build? Well I was a caravan salesman, hence had copies of caravan magazines to peruse to be sure we kept up-to-date with what was happening in the industry. Initially that's the only way I knew of yourself, the DIY Viscount caravan man. Old Viscounts were so well built, aluminium frame just lasted. (We used to supply Coromal Caravans to Isaac Boaber to do reviews on). With time I learned you were a fanatic 4WDer, hence a new reason to follow you. Hi Roothy, I have had Triton and Ford uts for the last 8 years. I have bought a second hand Mercedes Benz x-class ute with a Nissan diesel. The Merc is wider the Navara so you can lay a palate down on the tray. The Merc also has disc brakes on rear, shockers rather the leaf springs, more functions like hill decent, cameras all around and a 5 star safety rating. I bought it from business chap who lived in Newcastle. Original cost 70 k and I 35k only 4 years old. Now they don't build MB ute any more, I think it is a collection item 😀 Hope you ute is reliable, I have herd shocking stories about GWN utes failed at 100k . Best regards Ray

I did a test drive in one yesterday and the only problem I found was that I couldn't get anything out side pocket in the door because the door console with the handle and window controls was right up agains my hip. Has anyone else found this an issue?

Hi Roothy I love your new rig I’m thinking of buying one I love the rugged shape they look like a proper little truck .I’ve got an avan camper but I’m thinking of selling it and going the rooftop clam similar to what you have done I’m just wondering about the weight of all the gear up there what’s the roof rated at and how much does the gear weigh .I’ll be thankful for your knowledge .cheers Bob.

I'd suggest putting a roof high frame on your tray, move the tent further back to fix your aerodynamics issue and add a 270⁰awning

Big Fan of Roothy! What a character ey!? Should do a good old catch up video with Graham & old mate has been and a couple of the other good old characters ey. My brother found a Milo teddy at work signed by the man him self Roothy 😁 was wrapped as buggery was like Christmas came early, sit's in my Gen 1 SWB Pajero. Thanks for the great content over the years old mate! Love the fact this your first New car too ey 😁 Save the Penny's for the beer's and the chance to get away, just perfect. Right attitude, then buys a new 4bie that'll be his last, just poetic, you'll be long gone old mate by the time I hit your age I'd imagine possibly, and when I hit your age if I'm not doing it the way Roothy was back in the day Ill know I'm not doing it right. I've never seen the sense in spending hundreds of thousands on new cars, you got the right idea matey!!!! See you up a track!

May be you should tell the viewers the only version available now is the S11 and is only available in auto as it’s euro 6 and requires add blue , what a waste of space this Ute would be

Not sure that's right about only autos, but do agree that ad blu is a pity but it's also more common - and really does it do anything other than appease the nincompoops.
