Mahle X35 how NOISY is it?

When considering an electric bike, the question of noise from the motor and gearbox often comes up. With brands such as Specialized, Willier and Bianchi specifying the X35, it's vital buyers know how loud the system will be. In this quite unscientific demonstration, I let you hear the sound without the distraction of music or talk. I ride the Ribble CGR Al e on all power settings, and climbs of up to 12%. At the end of the video I run all power settings on the stand. With noise being a subjective thing, here you can judge for yourself.

Great video Roy. Like you I own a Ribble CGR AL e and have found the system to be pleasently quiet . The up side of the slight hum is strangely reassuring especially when keeping up with my son on hilly rides. The hum is telling me I won't" bonk" but have the necessary power to get to the summit. It doesn't feel intrusive or distracting to me at all.

When someone asks for a hilly Guided Ride, Tim, I say careful what you wish for, as I'll be on the Ribble 😊

It is relatively quiet and only makes a slight and encouraging whir when engaged. My friend has an e trike and if we ride alongside each other you only seem to notice the pedalling. Great technology adopted by Ribble and will be putting the GRL Al e through its paces over the coming weeks particularly whilst this weather lasts👍🚴‍♂️🌞🌞🌞🌞

Quieter than my motorbikes. I like its sound. Quite soothing I think? Looking forward to getting my CGR soon. Useful clip thanks Roy.

My Orbea gain D30 has been a godsend, particularly having suffered a serious illness, which reduced my lung capacity. Prior to that used my carbon Kuota Kharma, and having steep hills in all directions ivillage but since having the ebike has transformed my various rides from home.

Sorry to hear of your serious illness, Ian, but great that the e bike has kept you riding. There are so many people cycling now, and keeping fit, that the e bike has enabled. Long may you keep enjoying it.

Noise is subjective but high frequencies and especially static high frequencies are unpleasant. As you said you also lose a lot of high frequency hearing ability after 40. That’s why e-bike motor noise is an issue despite being mostly quiet.

Sorry Roy for giving wrong impression Doesn't switch off but goes to White (no drive) on its own. I'm sure I've seen this mentioned elsewhere. No error codes involved at all. Perhaps senses no power used for ,say, 5 minutes and switches to White. No power needed could be freewheeling or riding over 15.5 mph?
@RideWithRoy
@RideWithRoy 3 года назад
If it senses no power it will switch off completely, but not while riding. It would be worth an email to Mahle to ask the question. It may be something on later systems that I'm not aware of.

Very quiet Roy I would make a lot more noise going up a 12% gradient on my non-electric bike

Hi Roy, could you do a video on charging options for the bike? My bike would live in an outdoor shed with no power. Even if I got power to the shed, the guidance says to not overcharge. But I know for most people charging overnight is the most convenient option. I am assuming you can't remove the battery to charge it. Would be good to see/hear your insights on charging and see your routine.

Another great wee video Roy, I also find the tyres on my Cannondale Topstone make just as much hum/ whine as the motor, try riding along road with motor in Neutral

Yes, I should have added that as well, Alastair.

Useful video Roy, thanks. I would have been super interested in your cadence and speed parameters in addition to the gradient and motor settings. I think if any of your tests were performed on Strava segments you could probably extrapolate cadence and speed. BTW, still waiting for a brace of CGR Al e from Ribble. Ordered in April and promised this Friday but now told they are going to be delayed. Ribble have been all over social media (GCN et al) so demand has probably gone through the roof, coupled with a world shortage of components

Hey Roy. What camera are you using if you don't mind me asking 😊
@RideWithRoy
@RideWithRoy 3 месяца назад
I don’t mind you asking at all 😀 That video was shot with the GoPro Hero 9, but I found it so unreliable that I now use the DJI Action four. It’s entirely reliable and much easier to use. As I use external Mics, the GoPro required a media mod. Apart from the extra cost, this was a real chore to remove for battery changes. The Action 4 doesn’t need a media mod for external mics and battery changes are simple and fast.

A very interesting video. There is definitely a low-level whirring noise but nothing I would find annoying. BTW, your Dutch friend must be pulling your leg about coming from the hilly part of Holland. I don't think the highest part is much higher than two or three hundred meters! Take care. JP

I never have an issue with the sound of my Ribble Ebikemotion.
@FENCYCLIST

That doesn't seem to make anymore noise, than a few other e bike's, I've heard, CTC Peterborough has a couple of riders who use ebikes, both with motors in the bottom bracket, and they seem just as noisy, and for me the big downside is the frame's look big and heavy, compared to the ribble which looks more like a normal road bike.
@RideWithRoy

I think the X35 is way quieter than most crank drives, Michael. With the Ribble’s stealth looks and quiet motor, many riders are confused when I sail by them uphill 😂

Roy, I have 2 other E bikes. A full on MTB full suspension and a hybrid type - both with Bosch Performance Line CX crank type motors and, believe me, you could hear those motors at a tank rally. My Cannondale gravel bike is whisper quiet in comparison and when switched off it is hard to tell difference. By the way, do you know the criterion for the Ebikemotion switching from Green drive to White off by itself? I do get caught out by hitting a hill and struggling until I realise the dreaded auto switch off has occurred. But, hey, half the weight and whisper quiet...... No contest.
@RideWithRoy
@RideWithRoy 3 года назад
Thanks for that very useful perspective, Claire. The drive switching off by itself shouldn’t be happening. I suggest contacting the dealer. Also, Mahle customer services are very helpful www.ebikemotion.com/web/contact/. It would be worth connecting the app next time you ride to see if a fault code appears. Mahle can interrogate your app, remotely, and diagnose the fault. But, of course, it probably won’t happen when you need it to.

hi What is the clunking sound when you stop pedaling your bike?
@RideWithRoy
@RideWithRoy Год назад
The only clunking I can hear on the video is when it’s on the stand. That’s just the motor switching off once it thinks it has reached 15.5 mph, which is the legal limit in the UK. That’s only heard because the system isn’t under load, so it can’t be heard when riding. Any other clunking will be clipping in or my knees 😀

Is it possible to change cassette with a different gear ratio on the rear wheel equipped with a Mahle X35 motor?
@RideWithRoy
@RideWithRoy 2 года назад
The cassette can be changed, which is important as it’s a wearing part. You can change the cassette for a different ratio, in the same way you would for any bike (derailleur compatibility etc). The only part of the process that’s different with the X35 is to ensure you replace the magnetic lock ring in the correct position.

I've never thought about the noise of the Ebike motor before.. I have asthma, so all l can hear on film, Would be my breathing, completely drowning out any motor noise.. Ken Dodd would say l have a rusty Clack, Ha Ha..🤣

Thanks and welcome👍 There doesn't seem to be any more torque than from pedalling, so as you say, probably only an issue with high power motors.
