That has always been a constant characteristic of Sanremo: you can find the same singers for many editions in addition to being successful singers and old glories. It must be remembered that they are not expressly choosing a song that represents them at Eurovision.
The reason you can find the same singers from previous years in Sanremo is because it is not a "national final" for Eurovision, but a musical festival to showcase successful singers and newcomers of the italian musical scene. That's also the reason why there's the orchestra, they always sing in italian and there is no or very little staging (like dancers).
Just out of curiosity - has there ever been a time when someone won Sanremo but refused to take part at Eurovision? At least for the last 15 years or so?
Yep! In 2016, the group Stadio won but refused to go so we sent the second place Francesca Michielin. A lot of people also forget that before 2011 Italy had been absent from Eurovision for years because it wasn't that popular here (it has definitely gained popularity now tho) @@OnurUzOZ
@@OnurUzOZyes, in Sanremo 2014 the winner was Arisa, but Emma Marrone was internally selected to represent Italy for Eurovision that year. Since Sanremo 2015 the selection system changed, so the winner of Sanremo can choose to go to Eurovision or not.
@@OnurUzOZoh yes another fact in 2016. Sanremo was won by Stadio. They declined the opportunity to go to Eurovision and Francesca Michielin, as runner-up in Sanremo, represented Italy at ESC 2016.
As said, Sanremo is a very establieshed music contest (this is the 74th edition) , not a "national final". You can see the same singers in two consecutive years and over if the artistic director (host Amadeus in this case) selects their song. I think there where two occasions in which the runner-up went to ESC: 2016 = Stadio won with "Un giorno mi dirai" but declined the offer to go and Francesca Michielin represented Italy with "Nessun grado di separazione". Something slightly different happened back in 2014 because I think the Sanremo winner Arisa wasn't offer the "pass" to ESC and Emma Marrone was chosen as Italy's entry. Sanremo is very expensive so I think a different contest just for ESC would be smaller, less interesting and potentially with a lower quality I fear...
Sanremo is so big in Italy, 75% of share on tv for the final. That is an huge occasion for artists to present their new songs to almost all the nation. Eurovision is not the main thing, we don't choose winner for Eurovision, we chose the song who likes us the most.
He's great.. love him and everything he does..!! The orchestra in Sanremo is amazing.. the best ever!! I would suggest to u to watch the final night of the contest.. he's stunning.. and also the cover night, where he sings a song of a very famous italian artist who's passed away some years ago! Mahmood performance at that night was ..absolutely perfect !! Thanx for ur reaction ! Hugs
Unfortunately Mahmood is not going to win, he will probably not even get close to the podium. I agree with you, having dancers and a choreography, like in the video (have you seen it?), would have boosted the song so much more! "Tuta Gold" would totally slay Eurovision although participating for the third time, in such a short span, looks indeed a bit weird.
