Mahmoud talked about how he had to shoot 10 free throws before he left the court. Not only did all 10 have to swish but they had to swish perfectly to his satisfaction. If 1 did not hit perfectly he would start all over. It kept him on the court sometimes crying because his quest for perfection would keep him out in the blazing sun in Gulfport, Mississippi for hours trying to shoot each shot perfectly.
Lisa Rose no you got it all wrong young lady. They played fierce defense back in the 90s because they could still hand check. Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf was just that good.
No one wants to talk about what he did to Michael Jordan - when he was in high school. Mahmoud is by far the most underappreciated pioneer in the history of basketball.
I wonder what the shoot around with Abdul-Rauf and Dale Ellis was like… original splash brothers.. they probably needed to change the nets quite often in Denver when they were on fire 😂🔥
@@koolhandduke4087 Before Kap got benched (for sucking) he never made a peep about police abuse against minorities. His career was already over and didn't sacrifice anything. He gained. Also..white people get fucked with and killed by cops (the government in general) CONSTANTLY. Unless they're rich of course..Rauf was different. He believed the US government military complex(not the American ideal) was responsible for too much corruption throughout the world for him to stand for it's anthem in good conscious. Never made a big show of it. Which is at least understandable if you know jack about world politics. And cost him probably a hall of fame worthy career.
@@steveguse4481 --They both at some point in their careers refused to stand for the anthem. At what point YOU think Kap did it makes no difference. There are many reasons why black people should NEVER stand for it. But the common reason Kap and Rauf didn't stand is the same reason I will never fly one outside my home, its the same reasons John Carlos and Tommy Smith raised a gloved fist (blk power salute) during the anthem in '68 Olym. The same valid reason Muhammad Ali refused induction in the US army. The US flag and by extension the anthem is a symbol of oppression and tyranny around the world. Especially to black people in USA. So no one, at least not me gives a fuck why YOU think or if you think either sacrificed. What's relevant here, they did it for the stated reasons. And I supported them all.
The first time I saw Mahmoud play as a Freshman at LSU I literally had a physical and emotional reaction. I remember standing up and walking towards the TV in amazement. His game was so pure, refined, and efficient. I knew instantly that his game was not normal.
Greatest player I have ever seen play in-person, and I saw Magic play at Michigan State, Dominic play at Georgia, and Jordan play at North Carolina. He didn't need a screen or a play to get a good shot. His ball-handling, quick release, and, duh, accuracy, made him unguardable.
I totally agree I describe it as watching something magical. I literally cry from watching old clips I'm just overwhelmed with the level of talent, skill and grace he plays with. It's a blessing to witness!!
Wow the way Curry plays its literally the same. Both great spot up shooter, pull up shots, floaters, movement without the ball. Damn he would be a beast in today's game.
His game is better than Curry's because Curry shoots from the floor he is the purest jump shooter I've ever seen jumping in the air while shooting that alone takes more energy than just standing on the court and shooting anybody can do that
I've Ben saying that Curry and his game are very similar...i watched this guy play in MS...he was one of the greatest shooters I've EVER seen...like Curry he could pull up ANYWHERE after half court and it was a good shoot...Steph benefits from the way the rules aid the offensive players now in the NBA...if Chris/ Mahmoud was playing now then he would be lighting folks up
+Ulysses P. Walker Jr. Brother...Mahmoud was/is a legend in MS...if you watched him play in high school then you know how good he was...if he played now then he would be averaging way more than the 19 pts that he averaged in the 90's...if he had a coach that featured him in the offense then there would be no telling what this man could do...just think if he played for a Don Nelson, a Paul Wesphal, a Cotton Fitzsimmons...all I can say is what a waste of a great talent 🤔
Imagine if he played for Larry Brown or Chuck Daly. Chuck Daly coached Penny and Isiah Thomas. Larry Brown coached Iverson and Billups. George Karl was a scoring point guard type of coach too.
Been waiting 18 yrs to see this game after watching the highlights on Sportscenter back in 95. I was smiling ear to ear that night. Kudos for this video!!.
I just saw a video of him hitting 124 perimeter jump shots out of 126 in 6 minutes. Unbelievable! I watched more vids of his NBA career and Phil Jackson knows what he's talking about!
finally someone else knows what they are talking about.. lol..he jumper was wet..setting up teammates. nice quick crossovers..if only all the off court stuff he had going on, personally I think if he balled for more years more ppl now n days would know his game
Rodney Hawkins There actually wasnt any public personal problems besides him expressing his political and religious rights as a US citizen; to not stand for the National Anthem. The elites that ran NBA back at that time black balled him out of a career.
quite possibly the greatest shooter Ive ever seen. No Screens needed, In your Pointguards face.....All Day,Every Day. Just ask J. Stockton and M. Jordan.
***** old JordaN FROM 96 JUST had 2 years off playin baseball AND went on to win 3 more rings. so yeah his 10 scoring titles and 6 rings can hold those jumpers in his face. AND Jordan was an easy first round beating for other players so...............
AKA Chris Jackson ..absolute beast period. they hindered his career due to his religious choice. one of the best to ever do it. he'd drop 30 per game in today NBA
1:31 was definitely NOT a three. I'm not sure if the TV announcers and the arena announcers misspoke, but his left foot was well in front of the 3 pt line.
Y'all haven't seen him play in the big 3....He's at aleast 15 years older than any other player in that league and he is Shell of himself and he is still good... He made great guards look bad. When people talk about the great pgs They forget about him
Crazy and Unbelievable that he is not mentioned when it comes to the sport period. An elite guard without the size just pure talent. Dude would have won many games easily. Respect to AI Kyrie Tony Parker And Curry But Mahmoud was before his time. He would have dominated in this era as well. Living Legend
His game is nothing like Curry's, Chris doesn't need spacing to get his shot off, bounce off the dribble then wet, Curry's J comes from his chest, Chris is'ah more thorough shoot'ah, I'll put anything on it.
The Lob Mob since Curry is better, Mahmoud is the Curry of the 90s just like if Kobe was better than Jordan, jordan would be considered the Kobe of the 90s but, thats not the case so Kobe is the Jordan of the 2000-2010 era.
+Paulo Webba .... However it is important to note that if you are a coach you would be using Mahmoud as your model for perfect shooting form. You just cannot teach what Steph is doing.... Steph is a superstar and is having the time of his career, but when it comes to who is the "better" shooter, my money would be on Mahmoud.... Alan Houston was another shooter with excellent shooting form.
You stole my comment! If Abdul-Rauf had a offensive/uptempo coach and a Klay Thompson-esque shooting guard beside him, the Nuggets would have been awesome. Instead they tried to focus too much on Mutumbo on offense....ugh.
+2KGrind09 A player doesn't have to invent some new, never-before-seen style to be impressive... he just has to be really good at basketball. And curry is really good at basketball, and having one of the best seasons in the history of the league, statistically.. Shouldn't that be enough?
When mahmoud played for Denver he could have scored more but the rest of his team bitched & moaned about not getting touches. Especially Reggie Wiliams, La phonso ellis & mutoumbo
Simply put this guy played in the wrong era. I was a huge fan and this poor guy was literally railroaded out of the NBA. What an an amazing talent which was wasted.
Rauf is what speed and accuracy means. I would like to know his training style. Curry edge is he got a championship other than nothing else against this guy.
theres a 50 min vid on RU-vid with him talking about Everything from poverty to his intense training as a kid to islam and etc... When he was 9 he set a goal for himself that he would reach. He would go out every single day super early in the morning even when thunder struck and it was cold he would practise untill he came Home and his hands were frostbitten. He said as a kid sometimes he would train so hard that he nearly ran out of breath. Since he had tourettes syndrome and something else he became obsessed with doing Everything perfect. He wouldnt stop shooting untill he felt his form was absolutely perfect. i advise you to Watch the video its really worth it
yep and he also played against his imagination. he said he visualized playing against an invisible defender who always could just barely touch the ball while his dribbling and shooting. the amount of dedication was truly amazing
if you watched a lot of his games you could say he would have a higher 3 percentage if he line checking all the time, but since he's so fluid in his shot he doesn't care where he takes it. But if you pay attention he nails so many shots with a foot over the line or on the line while the other behind.
I noticed that watching a lot of videos on him. There were a lot of shots with his foot just inside or on the line. It's like getting the shot off comfortably was more important to him. Than where he was on the court. Not once do you see him look down to check for the line. People say they've never seen a shooter like Steph. My rebuttal is always, I have, his name is Mahmoud Abdul Rauf.
Im here in 2024, If Jason Kidd ever come on the Knuckleheads Podcast with Q-Rich and D-Miles, the First Question D-Miles gonna ask, "Who was the First person to Bust yo A***?" Jason Kidd replies " Pull up this video" 🙌😂😂😂 End of Discussion!💯 Mahmoud was the GENESIS of the Greatest Shooter the NBA ever had!!! This Brother was the Ultimate!!💯💯
I said this recently.,,.. THIS guy was A1...Very , Very talented,, at 6.2.. FUNDAMENTALLY SOUND. HYBRID POINT SHOOTING GUARD.. Cmon!!! In my book,, if he played longer ,, he's up there with the Greats as far as talent and know the game...
The NBA had no match up for rauf he was so different me as a bulls fan i was glad they were in the west because when the bulls had to play them the night before i couldn't sleep like if i was the one who was playing.
I can't think of anyone in the past or present that could guard him one on one. When he was at LSU as a freshman. Everyone at the park would argue about who could beat MJ one on one. Someone shouted out "I bet Chris Jackson would bust Jordan's ass!" Everyone emphatically agreed!!
