Mai Yoneyama's talent ranges between animation, illustration, character design and art.
As an animator, she has worked on music videos and series such as KILL la KILL, Panty & Stocking, KIZNAIVER or Little Witch Academia, while more recently directing the ending for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Her work as an illustrator is directly influenced by her animation background, gaining a worldwide following.
We look at her beginnings at prestigious animation studios including GAINAX or TRIGGER, following her career path and evolution as a broad artist who developed a mesmerizing and unique style.

Born too late to explore new continents. Born too early to explore the stars. Born in time to witness Yoneyamai. Yoneyamai is a once in a generation talent. Breathtaking.
@user-ni3bj2bi4z
@user-ni3bj2bi4z 3 месяца назад
Born in time to explore the molecular body... not only the multi-level universes within the body and our radically changing understanding of them... but also the trillions of organisms, structures, and yet to be comprehended entities within. If you were to take the number of stars within the observable universe by the number of seconds that have passed from the big bang to this present moment... and multiplied them, the amount would still not be as numerous as the amount of possible orientations a single protein can take. That seeming impossibility is still utterly nothing compared to the uncountable multitudes that lie beyond that single protein, and then interplay with each other in ways we are far from fully understanding. Born in time to explore consciousness itself... how minds are born, the difference between knowledge, fluency, and deeper levels of true understanding. AI is one key to understanding the miraculous world within ourselves, and a key to understanding the various gradients of abilities we call intelligence, and those abilities we are not always conscious of having. Born in time to explore the unprecedented connection and merging of cultures, people, and ideas across the entire known world. Today there are more people alive than all those who have passed away. The number of talented, intelligent people that are able to work together and create the unimanagible are in fact more numerous today than what has ever been available in the entire history of humanity. In a mere moment we are able to access an incomprehensible amount of ideas. Our perspectives and lives... now unbounded by time and space. (Even more so as some people are creating AI records of themselves much in the same way we take pictures, or videos.) To be human is to always be exploring. The more we explore and come to know, the more the frontier of what lies beyond the known grows. Your time is always the perfect moment for exploration... as long as you are willing, there will never be a final frontier. At least the final frontier lies infinitely beyond what we can see now. All of that unfathomable infinity which lies beyond your current understanding, beyond your current imagination... are limitless opportunities to expand not only your, but our frontiers.

Yoneyama-San. I a 54 years old. By chance i have watched Eve-yoku. I was mesmerized by the elegance and beuty of what i see there. That made me start drawing a year ago. And by chance i now realize that it was you who created the ART that made me start drawing after my fifties. I want to say .. thank you for the beauty and the art that you gave us which sometimes literally tears me up. Arrigato Yoneyama-San.

As an artist, I admire how Mai Yoneyama doesn't focus on what she thinks would grow popular, but rather, what artistic influences, experiences, and pasts that she could bring to the table. As artists, we all have different backgrounds and small things that inspired us. And all we try to do is to tell the world a little bit of what we see.

If I had to define this documentary with one word, it would be: "Inspiring". Mai Yoneyama is one of my favorite artists and her work inspires me to continue in this field of art. She also throws several interesting tips (at least for me): a properly research and treat an illustration as if it were an animation frame.

Beautiful tribute on Mai Yoneyama. Every time seeing her art, it does feel as she's leaning on "Capturing The Moment" in all of her work and very beautifully drawn and as a key frame artist. Then it dawn on me when TRIGGER Studio being mentioned, her art style do match of "Lucy" from Cyberpunk Edge Runner, thus am surprise and now know whom is behind the artwork/key animation for the Netflix series...

I'm glad this channel is back. Honestly, I've been watching the videos about Japan for years now. I barely even watch anime myself anymore, but the Japanese people, the looks and landscapes, the artists and content creators from there are so, so interesting to me. There's no other country that I'd be more interested than in Japan. I'm way past over the "I like Japan because of anime and I want to live in there" phase but I'm still very impressed with what I'm seeing. I wish I could, of course, but that would be very difficult in my case. At least I can enjoy it by watching it on RU-vid, I hope it won't get blocked sooner or later... Thank you, the authors of Archipel, for giving us all the opportunity to get a little bit more knowledge about all of these talented and hard working people from Japan. The visuals, music and the mood are incredible again. I was very pleased to watch it. (I wonder if one day I'll see a story about Illya Kuvshinov on this channel... We are from the same country, but he lives and works in Japan now, I think he's quite good too!)

Its so fascinating that she draws very calmly. I always wondered if the masters draw really quick and or have special techniques. But one word that lingers after watching this interview is how 'patient' she is. She looks like in the zone, not rushing things. But probabily soo much complex things happening in her amazing brain, heart, eyes and hands. Its like theres energy in every stroke. Very amazing.

Loved this, She has rarely came into interviews so I always wanted to see her thoughts on how she draws and what goes into her mind and what inspired her She saying that she could only draw 10 drawings per month when she started was a good inspiration, even tho its obvious that everyone starts from small but it was still good motivation for me EDIT: Also forgot to metion those 900 drawing 3 months exam, i learned something which I didn't knew before like I had no idea that in order to become a key animator you need to do something so hard, but it makes sense I can also implement this into my own workflow to get better in art

I had no idea she storyboarded and animated the ending outro for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners which was my favourite anime of 2022 and truly one of the greatest anime series I've ever seen in my life! The way she animated Lucy as she walks through the lonely streets of Night City still haunts and stays with me to this day. I don't know how else to describe her gorgeous art style other than elegant and fluid as well as being mesmerizing to look at. There's artists from different eras I look up to for inspiration to draw my own subjects and she's definitely a new current influence and motivation for me!

Thanks to Mai Yoneyama and Archipel for the wonderful episode. This is an episode that touches my heart. The cross-genre elements created by the fusion of different media resonates deeply with me. With a background in animation and storytelling, I understand the multifaceted steps beyond just motion and use that to extract the best illustrations from animation scenes and bring images to more vibrant life. Lately I've been roaming and traveling through various ancient forests, and it's nice to know how this affects me. I wonder what will happen in the near future. I also agree that artists need to observe their whole being and their external environment, and that is one of the many keys to art. The purpose is to observe with intent and questioning, to learn and unlearn beyond what is observed and seen, beyond what is visible. Thanks! I look forward to more adventures and creations. Keep creating and doing what makes you happy in life. - Kristoffer
