My friend and I tried out Maiko outfit in Kyoto! I filmed some footage with my GoPro. We really enjoyed it!
Quick information about Maiko and Geisha
Maiko literally means dancing child, or girl. Whereas Geisha means arts person. To become a geisha, you have to go through a Maiko training and then you can become Geisha.
In Gion, Kyoto, there are some shops where you can dress up as a maiko. Each shop has different maiko or geisha plans and you can take pictures or walk around in Kyoto with the outfit. :)

Great video as always; thanks for the cultural lesson on the difference between traditional Maiko and Geisha women. You and your friend looked great, Kazuko; I don't know why, but I've noticed that women usually have a special glow about them when they wear their country's traditional cultural garb (maybe it's due to the pride and glamour they feel when doing so; who knows?). Anyway, if I'm not mistaken, this is also the first time that you've extensively used voice-over narration in one of your videos, and I must say that it worked out quite well. (I love it when RU-vid creators 'stretch' themselves by trying new things, so kudos to you for this.) :)

Must have been an interesting experience, it must take a lot of discipline to do what they do everyday.

I did this when I went to Kyoto too! I don't even understand how real maiko and geisha wear that everyday, it take sooooo long to put on and its so uncomfortable! So much respect for them >_

You look great, I will definitely try that if I can come to Kyoto :D We tried to do it in a students' house, of course we did not have proper materials, my friend literally painted my face with watercolor paint etc :D The result was a disaster, in the end I was looking like a Killer Geisha with a face like the ones you can imagine in Halloween :D

That is so cool. But I have to be honest. As much as I love learning about Japanese culture, I just have never cared for Maiko makeup... I should go cry in shame now. But you guys looked like you were having so much fun

Having worked Renaissance Festivals my whole life I have heard a lot of conversations about "corsets vs Maliki" and which is worse. But I think it always came down to people did /do some painful things in the name of beauty. I guess it would be a it similar to some of the hair twists I have done. And yeah a lot of pain but after a few days you grow accustomed to it. The main point is thank you for sharing this with us.

わー、すごい! I've always found Geisha culture very interesting, so it was really cool to see your experience. You looked so lovely in the makeup and outfit! : ) Quick question for you. You live in Nagoya, and you've visited Kyoto -- how different are the Japanese dialects in those two places from the dialect commonly spoken in Tokyo? (I've had some experience with the Osaka dialect from watching Tomoko-san's videos, but I'm unsure of other Japanese regions.) ありがとうございます!!

That's okay!! You definitely helped me gain some perspective. It's really interesting how the language differs as you progress over the continent... Thanks a lot, Kaz! ^.^

Great video! But why were you not allowed to film when they put makeup on you? There are so many videos of this right?

You girls looked so pretty :). Is there a way to tell the difference between a maiko and geisha just through looks?

this video was great Kaz! what do these shops think of foreigners who want to try the Geisha/Maiko clothes and makeup? and are there japanese people who think it's offensive if a foreigner was wearing it?
