Mailbag: How "Bad" Is This Defensive Draft Class?

DIANTE!!! I know our guy is in the game himself, so always thrilled to see/hear him.

I think he’s underrating the DTs a bit. The Edge class isn’t great but Murphy is a top 10 player in the class and Newton is probably around top 15-20 or higher and others think he’s a top 10 player. Also would say Quinyon is around a top 10 player. If he transferred to a top 10 program he’d be a clear top 10 pick but he played at Toledo so people low ball him a bit. We just saw this off-season that high value DTs are worth the same as high value edge rushers. I’d draft whoever is your favorite out of Newton/Murphy before I’d draft any of the edge rushers.

as a draft nerd, I thoroughly appreciate this content. Talking about how good players are in the context of players that were drafted before them in a 4 to 5 year window is really how people should talk about an analyze drafts. Too often people get stuck on a draft and an act as if there will never be another draft in the following year. So they get desperate and say let’s take a player at a particular position not realizing that in another draft that player might’ve gone late second and now you’re trying to draft them in the middle of the first round. It’s so terrible way to acquire talent.

I only have 6 defensive players as impact day 1 guys so this isn't that far off.

my bears are in a tough predicament. We’d love to add another defensive lineman, but they might not be worth a top 10 pick. there are super talented wide receivers, but the Bears already have a couple of number one wide receivers and I don’t think it’s wise to have that many offensive weapons for a young quarterback ideally, you’d love to trade down take Byron Murphy and hope that he really ends up being an impact three tech and you also get an extra couple of draft picks out of it.

Why does this guy have Cooper DeJean above Terrion Arnold? I honestly don't think this guy is an outside CB. He's more of a slot/safety hybrid. Maybe in the right hands someone can mold him into Kyle Hamilton but I very seriously doubt it. He doesn't seem to have the instincts or playmaking ability of Kyle Hamilton.
