Here for every NFL story that matters. Welcome to The Athletic NFL, home of industry insider Dianna Russini & The Athletic Football Show with Robert Mays and Nate Tice.
Been waiting for the Seahawks take. Pretty disappointing to have it as 10 minutes at the end of the show. We’ve heard plenty about some of these teams (bears!) all offseason. It’s lazy to say ‘Seattle didn’t do much so there isn’t much to say’
It’s quite obvious that this season isn’t about a long-term plan at quarterback, so I don’t know why that would be the sum total of a judgement here. What about their draft, free agency etc. Just seems like an odd take in that respect. Now if you don’t think Arthur Smith will be a good fit, that’s another debate.
Carmen has definitely done her homework across the NFL, but I kind of have a tough time listening to her speech pattern and I think some of her points ultimately are highly simplified - Colts didn't draft a corner, Raiders don't have a QB, etc. On the Raiders specifically - and I'm not in any way a fan or am sure they went about this offseason the right way, but let's look at some of things brought up: - The top-6 QBs were selected before they even got on the board. They did try to trade up, but I personally would rather them miss out on what I believe was an overrated second tier of guys. I do think they should've taken a shot on a Spencer Rattler, Michael Pratt, etc. on day three - Jackson Powers-Johnson's biggest issue wasn't footwork, although he is still refining his technique in some areas as a one-year starter, but rather consistent snap placement. He has the measurements for a guard, the ability to anchor in isolated situations vs. interior rushers and you love what he could bring as a movement blocker - And every team plays with 5+ DB on the field for majority of snaps. I would've liked them to address outside corner earlier as well, but what are we suggesting? - That they shouldn't use packages with their best cover-guy Nate Hobbs on the field? At least with drafting Tommy Eichenberg on day three, the have the flexibility to use Divine Deablo as a big nickel potentially, along with Trey Taylor in round seven as a versatile piece in the secondary. And Decamerion Richardson to me can be a starter outside, who they got early in the fourth round.
Are we talking about Isaac Yiadom who was playing for the Saints one and a half seasons? If Kool-Aid McKinstry or any other DB on the roster is not better than him next season I'd be shocked. 😅 That being said - I'm not sold on DC either. But he's DAs guy - so I guess the Saints were ready to stick with him when they stuck with DA. The second best they could do is get a new OC. And they did. - Anyhow, the NFC sucks all across the board so who cares if they didn't improve. Neither did any other team in the NFC. 😅😅😅
Disagree on most of the points made against the Colts offseason. CB need was overblown. Latu adds upside to a solid and deep pass rush. The AD Mitchell slander continues, rooting hard for him to prove all of the doubters wrong.
Her logic doesn’t make any sense. How is the corner room full of rookies, and she’s mad didn’t draft any? Lmfao and why is there pressure on Latu? The d line is the best position group on the team.
I had to skip her part. She’s acting like latu can’t stay on the field he’s played every game the past 2 seasons. His injury concern is more how long will his career be more than can he stay on the field consistently
Yeah she comes off as pretty uninformed beyond a surface level knowledge of a few players' names (notably not enough players' names) and narratives spun by "journalism"
1943 was a wild year for home front war activites. 1943 saw the Steagles, the birth of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, and the Steel Penny. Two of these three did not last until 1944. Not to mention the insane levels of rationing going on.
Crazy that this should be proof that NO ONE knows shit about the players before the draft. I read so much negative crap on stroud before the draft and now he’s easily one of the best QBs drafted the last several seasons.
