Very interesting 40 years ago when I was in UK I worked on 100s of 1700n they nearly all had head problems I eventually found a way to replace the heads separately with a 50% success rate brought back memories GREAT VIDEO

How did you do the head change? Especially, how did you remove the glue so you could salvage a head, and how did you align it when installing? Really keen to give this a go now.

@@video99couk wow it was 40 years ago I cannot remember completely but I was desperate as I had 100s of units all with head problems I don't think it would be logic to build the device I had for 1 unit Removing the heads was easy it was alignment back was the problem I remember finding a completely duff drum and submering in resin to make a mold so I wold get the exact position of the head sounds crazy but these machines were very expensive in 82 I also had a powerful microscope I had limited success about 40 50 % about ten years ago someone had thes drums on ebay for £50 I was tempted to buy although I had no use for them LOL wish you luck

Hello. I collect audio and video equipment and also use it of course. I really enjoy your videos and learn a lot from them. Great collection too. You mentioned that nobody is interested in CRT monitors anymore but the reality is that especially professional monitors are very popular with gamers to connect old consoles to them. I have a 20" SONY PVM and a PS2 or original Xbox via component video is marvelous. The prices for those are going up both in the US and Europe. Have a nice day.

I've heard of this, yes. Only a CRT gives you exactly what should be there (which is why I still use a CRT TV/monitor in my workshop).

A real shame that the replacement head was duff, I would definitely try replacing the head chip, you have nothing to loose at this point, I have successfully transplanted VHS chips in the past, having the microscope should help if you can manage to extract a good chip, the biggest problem will be the glue. As soon as I saw the head stall on the Sony, I thought it was down to the power supply, the fishy smell confirms bad caps!

A shame about the head drum, but at least the Video8 looks promising. I'm quite jealous of the U-matic brochure pack (and monitor guide), having been on the lookout for Sony Pro Video catalogues (generally even chunkier and would have included other formats, your TBCs and such) for quite a few years now - nice find! Even Sony had a look years back and couldn't find any. As a low priority thing, if you could scan them bit by bit as and when you have a spare moment, it would be greatly appreciated... but no hurry, of course! I'll double check to see if there is anything that's been done already. Thanks for offering!!

14:18 "Why would you want a black and white monitor?" Because they have a much sharper picture than color monitors, especially when you compare smaller CRT's. TV cameras had black and white viewfinders for a long time after manufacturers were able to make small color CRT's. At the local broadcast station where I was a volunteer for a few years, the control room of the studio was in the back of a truck and we used black and white monitors for all the cameras. Only the Program Out monitor and the Preview monitor were color.

14:25 A lot of the Sony PVM and BVM range are now quite sought after by retro gamers as displays of choice for classic video game consoles. Whether info and specs would appeal to them is anyone's guess, really. Most seem content with an RGB input and leave it at that..

I did use a 21 CRT Sony computer monitor (branded Sun) for a long time, it was stunning quality but absurdly heavy. The picture slowly got over-bright which was a common effect as the CRT aged, I seem to remember a resistor change was all it took to fix that and I carried on using it for some more years. Eventually I sold it, but I should think it's in landfill somewhere now. Pity really, it was one of the few true full HD capable CRTs I've ever seen.

That’s so sad, of course I didn’t know if the heads were good or not. Both heads looked pretty good under a magnifying glass. At least I now know that the video head drum that had been sitting here for a few years wasn’t any good. Anyway it was really exciting to find out, even if the end result was a bit disappointing.
@video99couk
@video99couk 3 года назад
It was certainly worth the shot. I do wonder if it might be possible to transplant a good head from one drum to another. That would be an interesting challenge. I would start by trying to get a broken head out without damaging it any more, if that worked then it might just be possible.
@ianbakke
@ianbakke 3 года назад
@@video99couk That would be interesting, it would probably take too much time and effort for it to be worthwhile. However if you can get a head off without damaging it how would you align and fix it into place properly? Also how can it be that one head wears out faster than the other, shouldn’t it be worn the same amount?

I would be interested please if it's possible to scan any info on the Sony EVO9700P, VO5630 & BVU980P which I've got here. Also got a BVU150P, anything on that? Thanks, Tim.

It's a pity that the heads were bad, I know about guy in my country who has successfully made replacement heads back in the day for various 1" VTRs from scratch and eventually adding windings to dummy heads or reusing AMPEX heads which apparently were made with gaps on both ends and with some precise handwork could be rebuilt, but this might be next to impossible on smaller formats like these. Nowadays it's probably much easier to get hold of some spare heads compared to 60-70s Czechoslovakia where in the begining such VTRs could not be officialy imported, but still some managed to get in as "accessories" to different non-embargoed machines. There's video here on youtube where he talks about how he made different types of heads, but sadly it's completely in Czech with no subtitles available. But at least you can see old Machtronics VTR running with his DIY heads: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y4V2IxmrZbw.html

The back tension settings of these machines is very crude, so that the start of the tape has lower back tension than the end. Big weakness of the format.

You can buy an original on Amazon or a third party on eBay that'll work out of the box, but they're around £20. However, Colin is right - just use a universal remote - One For All (the URC1210 is £11 in Argos - try code 0556) or even the cheap pound shop brands like Signalex should work. They usually have a learn mode where you press some buttons until it switches the device off.

Can you show us how you normally discharge those capacitors? Will it damage your ESR meter if you don't discharge it first?
@video99couk
@video99couk 3 года назад
The low voltage ones, I'll let the ESR meter discharge them. For testing the 400V primary side capacitor, I would use a 1W resistor in the 10k area. Though that may exceed it's wattage rating, it will only be for a moment so it won't overheat. I don't short things out because I don't like scary sparks.
