A VHS shell with Betamax tape loaded in it! Why? So the tape could be cleaned of mould. Splicing of VHS, Betamax and BetacamSP tapes. Cleaning with an RTI TapeChek machine. What happens if you try to play Betamax tape on a VHS player. Also a brief mention of an error in the WALL-E film where they muddled up Betamax and Betacam.

Btw, I recall doing similar winding work for other reason... You can eventually find upper clear tape wheels that are ACTUALLY removable. It's more often the case on VHS then beta tapes tho. You could save a lot of time not winding tapes but removing it completely. More over, the red clamp olding the lead to the white wheel becomes slidable upwards, no tape cutting😮

I regularly splice VHS tape to go in Beta tapes, still like to do recordings on these formats (just for the heck of it) and most of the pretty 1st Gen Betamax cassettes (before Dynamicron etc, just in a plain black shell) have degraded so much, the oxide layer literally splits from the plastic carrier. I use a sacrificial cheap and nasty VHS deck that I just use for spooling the tape around. And if you take the thin E-300 5hour PAL SP tape (the good one by the BASF that is actually worth recording on) and you fill it up as much as you can, you can make an L-1000 tape. It's a good technique. Refurbishing Betamax video cassettes... in 2019.

ended up just dropping the spools direct into a vhs shell, then carefully watched for end of tape to stop manually early, used the VCR to clean both sides fast forward/rewind/fastforward again then rewinded it in my beta player after all that cleaning was finished to balance load the spool in its original beta shell. So now I have a vhs tape raring to use for beta conversions thats stripped now. Good video im glad I found this video made me very happy to know I can do this without investing in a 2nd beta player, can enjoy my nightmare on elm street I found today and some others potentially (1 tape might be too far shot to do was sticking on the reel and tape looks like its cloudy/delaminating)

We do exactly this. I suspect it needed more cleaning, but that's a bit hard if you don't have the RTI on hand. We have 6, so we can muck about with it. Plus we have some wet-type tape cleaners which apply IPA and we finish off with a few passes through those.

I had an unrecoverable loss of most of my home video tapes (Video8) many years ago. I shipped my tapes to a small business like yours, in Florida. Two of the 4 tapes were not returned and no transfers of them were made. The proprietor had clearly lost my tapes or accidentally throw them out with the envelope. In the end there were enquiries by several consumer protection authorities to force him to refund my money.
@video99couk
@video99couk 2 года назад
I have systems in place to prevent that. Firstly I inform customers on the day that their work arrives. Next I start work on them nearly always within 24 hours, so they don't sit around. Finally, even when tapes are to be disposed of, I have a system for letting them "cool down" for a few weeks just in case a customer changes their mind. But in the end we are all human. I've lost the occasional thing, never a customer tape before transfer, but I did recently lose a blank USB stick. As for money, I don't bill the customer until I've done the transfer work. With very few exceptions, I don't expect payment up front.

W-VHS was a format that could support up to 9 hours of component analog SD recording on a single WT-180 videotape. There were also D9 videocassettes that could be used for W-VHS recording as well, although I am unsure how long the recordings on those tapes would be as the tape speeds between the formats are likely very different.
@video99couk
@video99couk 5 лет назад
Yes there were D5 and D9 formats, but by any real measure, they tanked. D-VHS did even worse, there were only two UK machines and they wouldn't even play each other's recordings. W-VHS was a disaster too. The biggest was probably MII, but that was hopeless too (I have MII machines here). So all attempts by Panasonic to get a professional version of VHS off the ground, just failed.

I've had plenty of broken and snapped VHS tapes spliced together by just using regular sellotape, and it works fine, no need to use some expensive or hard to find tape. And I've had lots of really badly damaged tapes but they will still play fine, one or two attempts at cleaning the heads to get a decent picture. But often on a fixed tape playback will stop when it detects where the joint has been, but I often find that just a simple fastforward or rewind over that part will solve the problem. I have one snapped VHS tape which has snapped with one spool taking almost all of the tape leaving a very small amount of remaining tape on the other spool. No idea how I would go about repairing that, I'm guessing it means removing that tape off the spool?. I think most of the tapes that snap tend to be (but not always) tapes that are E-240 (ie 4 hours) than regular E-180 (3 hours) tapes. My dads friend who used to repair VCRs and TVs back in the 80s and 90s would never buy 4 hour tapes, insisting that they are prone to snapping.
@video99couk
@video99couk 2 года назад
Sellotape degrades badly over time, oozing its adhesive onto the tape. It then gets onto the head drum and can actually destroy a video recorder by snatching the head tips. Get proper splicing tape! For a snap at the end, it can be easier to get a spare spool from a scrap tape, and splice onto that. It doesn't matter if you end up with a longer than usual clear leader tape.

Do you have a special head cleaning tape? or do you take the top off the vcr and manually clean the heads with ipa?
@video99couk
@video99couk 3 года назад
That depends on the tape formats. VHS, Beta, 8mm, micromv, MII and Betacam formats all have readily available head cleaner tapes, though sometimes cleaning the tape path with IPA still has to be done. Some formats such as V2000 and Umatic, head cleaner tapes are either unobtainable or hard to find, so manual cleaning is the only way.

Is there any sort of chemical treatment that can be done to clean that sort of buildup from videotape? It looks like the tape needs to be run through a slow pace soaking process with IPA or something safe followed by a scrubber to remove the loosened mould and dirt. That RTI machine sounds like it dry scrubs the whole length of tape which seems a bit rough.

Hi Colin,I have been transferring Philips VCR 1500 tapes that continuously where clogging the heads. By holding a small piece of paper against the heads while I did the transfer I could make a nice recovery. The pictures where used in a documentary on Belgian national TV. Maybe something to try. Cheers.Frank.
@video99couk
@video99couk 5 лет назад
That would have been caused by sticky-shed tapes. The tape baking process might have made those playable without having to resort to your head-cleaner approach. Perhaps the paper head cleaner might have slightly reduced the head clogging with the mouldy tape, but I think the mouldy parts really were very bad indeed. There's always a risk to the heads too! Some Digital Betacam decks do automatically apply a head cleaner during playback when they detect errors.

It did work for me but results will vary according to the design of your particular player. It might be worth trying a different brand of VHS player. It was only good enough to spool the tape through, it wouldn't have been any good for playback though. Not that it would really play anyway of course.

There's something I've been wondering for a while now,& judging by the subject of this video, I think you're the person best placed to answer it. Beta had cleaner tapes are pretty highly priced these days, often reaching over £40. Vhs cleaner tapes are much cheaper. So, as the tapes are the same size, can I slice a section from a vhs cleaner into an empty beta chassis? Or would you just suggest cleaning the heads by hand?
@video99couk
@video99couk 20 дней назад
There's no harm at all in transplanting a VHS head cleaner into a Beta shell. If you can splice onto the foil leader tape, then the proper auto stop will function too. If you can't get a spare Betamax shell, a small Betacam BetacamSP shell will work just fine too.

You can use Betamax tapes on those Betacam machines which are designed for Oxide tapes, but most will only take BetacamSP or higher. Betamax recordings of course will not play on a Betacam machine since the formats are different. Oxide tapes won't hurt the drum however metal BetacamSP tapes shouldn't be used in (most) Betamax decks since they could cause excessive head wear. The exception being that ED-Beta(max) machines which are designed to work with BetacamSP tapes, but they are rare.

Will a Betacam player play Betamax tapes?
@video99couk
@video99couk 4 года назад
No. The reasons are many but start with the head drum size being different and go from there. Interestingly, the same is not entirely true of Panasonic's answer to BetacamSP called MII. Some of those machines can play SVHS. As a result of this backwards compatibility, the head drum size and many technical aspects of MII were set to non-ideal specifications, in part causing the format to be unreliable as hell and bombing. So Sony were very right to not try to make Betacam decks play Betamax tapes.

@rahb1
@rahb1 4 года назад
@@video99couk Thank you so much; that lends even *more* weight to the claim re the origins. Umatic was excellent quality for its time; Beta was not significantly worse, especially as we only had SD screens at that time. At first I couldn't understand why VHS succeeded in the US (allegedly because of recording time) as we (Australia) had three hour (L750=3.25 hours) tapes at the start! With the advent of L830 tapes (3.75 hours) very soon after, which could also be recorded at half speed (ie 7.5 hours), the additional time available on VHS cassettes (4/8 hours) seemed trivial. I can only suppose the *initial* impression in the US that NTSC Beta I could only record for one hour (at first) stuck in peoples' minds, even though this changed very quickly. In another vein altogether, I have *never* been able to reconcile why a PAL recording, with MORE data (720 x 576) took SO much less Beta tape than an NTSC recording (720 x 486) of the same time length, *despite* the frame rate difference! BTW, *always* a pleasure to watch your videos and they are always informative! Greatly appreciated; thank you Colin.
