Robert, Agreed about wooden sleepers…. Especially as, by the time I gave up with use supporting ballast, some were getting on for forty years old!! Just few are still in use at over sixty years old and supported on decking boards. Regards Maurice
Thank you! I have done 3 crossings like this one on that layout and several more on other layouts. It took a bit of a learning curve to figure out what to look out for but now that I have the system down I can build flawless crossings that won´t give me any trouble for years.

Hi! I am happy to hear that you are enjoying the building progress and the looks of my layout. The chickens are a group of 10. They are very funny but sometimes they mess up my railway line especially when there is fresh fill dirt along side the track bed. So its not always fun to have them around...
Excellent work. I need to build a structure similar to your cement section so I can drive my garden tractor over the rails. About 1.25m wide. Seeing the base you put under the cobble stones tells me that I need to do the same. I can't put cement over the plastic ties. They will freeze and crack. My rails all have a concrete base. About 150mm wide by 75mm deep. There is 1 3m piece of steel reinforcing rod through the concrete. The track sections are almost 2m long and are not attached. This was done because of winter freezing and because I live in a rural area with burrowing rodents. Good for 20 years and counting. I will be interested in seeing how your track survives winter.
We will get to see how my crossings will hold up during winter. Since this is not the first crossing I have done this exact way I am pretty confident that they will hold up just fine. Same goes for the track base. I first started to use basalt ballast 10 years ago, shortly after one of my friends did the same. It´s for sure not a maintenance free way of installing the tracks but it´s easy to maintain and holds up a long time. Plus you can easily make changes... If you dont want to encase your ties in cement you can pour a slab and build a metel "track encasement" to make it passable for your mower. Nice to hear form you!
I have been watching your progress with great interest. I once had a garden layout - 32mm gauge track - where the track ‘floated’ on ballast like the real thing. Indeed, it was really like the real thing as the ballast was 6mm to dust (the smallest possible) supplied by a quarry owned by British Rail in the 1980s. With your larger track and what appears to be a smaller ballast size, I think your track will be more resilient than mine. After a while I spent more time repairing the track than running trains. This was also partly due to much of the track being old fashioned wooden sleepers (ties) on battens that really needed a solid wood or concrete support. The final problem was a washout caused by heavy rain and increasing difficulty of old legs getting down to track level! Best wishes (Sorry this is not in German.) Hey Maurice, thank´s for your comment! Setting tracks in "real" ballast is the way to do it in my opinion. It will never be maintanace free but when the layout is built the right way it is doable. Wooden sleepers on the other hand are a nightmare after a few years in the garden, that´s a whole other story. My track consits of brass rail profile and plastic sleepers. They hold up for a decade at minimum without any maintanace. I wish you all the best!

You´re right concerning concrete pavers. Those natural pavers with bigger seems between them are set in this fine gravel, at least in our area thats the case. Either that or solid grouted.
More good progress. The gentle bending of the new section looks great. Any plans to secure the track down, or is it just the gravel between the ties that does the job?
Using flex track and bending my own raduis is the best thing ever! It looks so much more like the real railroad! The track is only held in place by the gravel. It is not maintanance free but it works good and looks great in my opinion.

…… and needless to say there were no plastic sleepers when I started in garden railways about 1955! Wooden battens and sleepers, white metal chairs and brass rail, all held together with brass pins. No rail bending machine. Bending the rails to fit will greatly help with keeping alignment. Maurice
Oh, you are a garden railroad veteran ... 1955! Back then this hobby must have been outstanding. It amazes me that wooden sleepers can even get this old. Do you live in a dry climate?
You mentioned using pond liner. Aren't you worried that this may cause upheaval long-term as water stagnates on top of the liner and freezes/thaws in winter? Wouldn't a permeable landscape fabric be a better choice?
Good question. Regarding any landscape project I am totally with you. Unfotunately I have had no luck with landscape fabric underneath my track bed at a previous layout. It was a maintanance night mare... The idea of using pond liner undernehath was first implemented by a friend of mine years ago. At first I had the same concerns as you have but I have personally seen it working just fine for the last 6 years. The water will run of to the side or between the individuall pond liner sections which are only overlapped and not glued together. The remaining water will evapurate. To summarize, this approach works fine in the climate I am. I hope this answers your question. Keep watichng and asking question´s, have a good day!

Hi! The train rides on it´s tracks as usual, even on the crossings. The concrete is set slightly below the grade of the track. I appreciate that you like my content, thank you! Garden railroading is not just about railroad. There are so many different tasks like landscaping, electrical, woodworking, underground utility and so on. All of that has to be done to achieve a good looking, functional garden railroad.
This is looking good. Its very interesting to me as back in the 1960's my father was one of the founding members of the first model railway club in Ireland. So I have been interested in modeling and trains since I was a small child. In real life you sometimes hear of a problem where animals, usually cattle get on to a railway line. I think you may have similar problems with wandering hens. 😄 Do you have a snow plough attachment for winter time or do you stop operations in winter.? Hopefully next year I may be visiting Hamburg and will visit the Model Railway there, something I have been wanting to do for quite a while. Keep up the excellent work.
Thank you for your nice comment! I do have problems with wandering hens, they destroy my track bed quite often. But at some point I will simply eat my problems for dinner, so it gets less and less of a problem... I really can encourage you to visit the model railway located in Hamburg. I have been there three times so far and this massive layout impressed me every time!
I will be running the massoth central station, so the track will be powered. The track is slightly higher than the concrete surface (approximately 1mm). Between the rails I ensured to have plenty of space for the wheels to roll through so the train won´t even notice that this is not a normal track but a crossing.

Hi, thank you very much! The divice is a track bender. I use flex track which will come in straight peaces. To bend curves I use the track bender which will give you a custom, consistend bend.
It is not a matter of how much money you have, more so how you are spending it. I am very mindfull where I put my money to fulfill my dreams. My current dream is to build myself a nice garden railroad so thats where my money goes...
