Maine has a long legacy of excellent fly fishing for species such as Smallmouth Bass, Brook Trout and Landlocked Salmon. In this special video Tom Rosenbauer and Mark Melnyk visit one of the oldest and most famous sporting lodges in the country, Weatherby’s. They are guided on some famous and historic Maine rivers for both Smallmouth Bass and Landlocked Salmon and discuss the tactics, flies and techniques needed for success. Wonderful full-length show produced in one of the prettiest states in the eastern United States!

Weatherby's is one of the best places on earth. Went there every year as a kid... where my love for fishing was born.

That is extremely helpful this time of year. Water is cold and fish are lethargic. As always your video will help me become a better fly fisherman. Thank you!

early 90's lived at Loring AFB and was stationed outside Caribou.... fly fished the Aroostook, Little Madawaska, many smaller places, and also road tripped to famous waters like Grand Lake Stream for Landlocks.... Squapan Lake, so many others. Seems like a lifetime ago.

The little Maine salmon are cute. I imagine they aren't genetically modified like the +30" we catch in NY, but on a 3 weight I bet they're fun!

These Maine landlocked Atlantics are a mix of wild / native and hatchery fish (from native brood stock). Your New York salmon are Pacific chinooks, cohos, and rainbows / steelhead and nearly 100% hatchery raised, though there are a small number of Atlantics, too. One of the big differences is that the NY fish spend most of their lives fattening up on the massive forage base of alewives in Lake Ontario or Lake Erie. These Maine landlocks are primarily riverine fish, though some of them, like the Grand Lake Stream fish, spend most of their days in lakes. The rivers drain granite lined and spruce covered basins, so they are rather acidic and not very fertile. The riverine fish subsist primarily on an insect based diet (which is sparse in the winter) so they don't get all that big. The lake dwellers eat smelts, which they also follow up tributaries in the spring, but the biomass of smelts isn't anything even remotely close to that of alewifes in Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. A healthy three year old brown trout from Lake Ontario will weigh 7-8 pounds; a healthy three year old brown from a Maine lake might make 15" and won't weigh two pounds due to the differences in geology and forage bases.

Very nice video ... I've never been to Maine, but I have fished for landlocks in the rivers in uptstate New York. I loved fishing in the "tea" waters there, as well as in the UP of Michigan. Although I've not been to Maine, I've been reading about and tying many Streamer patterns developed there. I was very fortunate to have caught an Atlantic salmon on a classic Maine pattern, the Nine-Three streamer in the River Ness, in the shadow of Inverness, Scotland - back around 1985. One of my favorite pattern for Smallies and trout is the Black Ghost. The contribution to Streamer development from the men and women of Maine is epic. Take care.

Maine is the place to go if you want to catch nice native trout. Georgia can't compare to Maine when it comes to trout fishing.

Wait smallmouth are already spawning down in Maine?
@alanyuodsnukis1177
@alanyuodsnukis1177 3 года назад
With water temps in the 40's those fish weren't spawning yet. That doesn't happen until at least 50 degrees, which is nearly always between May 20 and June 10 in most of the waters around Grand Lake Stream. Much depends on the water depth (West Grand Lake, quite deep, warms up later than it's shallow neighbor Big Lake) as well as winter ice pack and weather in March and April, but the bass on are on the beds almost always sometime between May 20 and June 10. Judging by the look of the foliage and the water temps mentioned int he video, I'd guess they were fishing and filming in early May/

@@newflyfisher haha!! You win this round. I dunno, I just went to grand lake with my 70 dollar reel, 150 dollar rod and 40 dollar fly line. Bacon cheeseburger at the pine tree. That's the more realistic blue collar fishing I'm about.
