Had a lot of fun back in the mid 80's-early 90's in Waterville. Worked at the Sappi Paper Mill "traveling pipefitter" and had a Hunting Cottage on Unity Pond in Unity. A few good dance clubs were open back then. Champions just opened up, Martins Manor had a decent dark lounge & dance floor downstairs and Pete & Larry's at the "old Howard Johnsons". The Pointe Afta Sports Bar on the Winslow/Waterville town line was a decent place to hookup w/friends and a bite to eat before heading out to the clubs mentioned. Waterville wasn't bad back in the 80's.
The Levine brothers died and their store was empty and derelict for several years. Colby College bought it and razed it, replacing it with a boutique hotel and upscale restaurant. Colby is investing millions in what was a crumbling downtown repurposing empty buildings wherever you look. The energy downtown can be felt. Waterville House of Pizza is now a very good Greek restaurant for example.
I grew up in Skowhegan, there is WAY more to my home state than way too many over-priced restaurants and phony people. All these places will soon be bankrupt and whining.
