I honestly don't think they were making him to be a hero and instead using the whole good guy persona thing until the end to show how pretty much everyone huge online isnt a good person and the editing bad in the videos of m ovie to show the lack of trying but so long as you lie to make yourself look like an amazing person you can get away with it easily until you monumentally fuck up uand even then you have rabid trash that'll still blindly follow you around and then using the girl to show that some people get sucked into the bullshit and end up getting fucked over even though trying to not be a horrible person but just being what they think works...idk maybe im reading too far into it but its supposed to be a thought provoking film and wouldnt be out of possibility to have itall be ridiculous satirical almost just to get that point across cause thats what "influencers" are

Link isn't the "hero" in this film at all... they are making fun of the "everyone is obsessed with their phones, phones are bad!" Because that's just an out of touch and generalized position to have. The point is to make fun of the people who make videos and internet posts complaining that everyone is too obsessed with their phones...when they themselves are creating media that is consumed on smart devices and computers. It's hypocritical and most people who are not influencers or in the public eye are not constantly glued to their phones and social media

It seems like after TASM, he wanted to play in less bigger films. Which I don't blame, since it sounds like from the interviews basically no one had fun making it, since Sony wanted to focus on making something like the MCU rather than an actual good movie. And then he lost the role. Like from interviews until recently he just looked upset every time spiderman was mentioned to him. But this might be because he's showing up for No Way Home.
