Too cheap to pay for a motel, I camped just off of remote highway 101, west of Chapleau, to break up a long drive. For over an hour, a large animal paced around my tent. Here's how I try to stay cool in such a situation.

Haha my parents told me a story of them hiking through the alps and searching for a spot to put up their tent while it was getting dark. So they stumbled upon a grassy patch and just put up their tent and went to bed. The other morning they were woken up by a very loud scratching on their tent and a massiv shadow!! So my dad poked his head out the tent to take a look whats going on, since there are not many dangerous animals in central europe. It was a cow licking the condensation water off the tent :'D They put up their tent on a pasture.

A college professor told us a story about how when she was tent camping in Tanzania as part of a guided tour a male lion plopped down and took a nap literally leaning on her tent, while she was in it. Luckily the tent didn't buckle or collapse. She got no sleep and concentrated fully on being as still and quiet as possible while still needing to breathe. I hope I never know terror like that.

I had a terrifying tent camping bear experience many years ago in WNY . My boyfriend and my 7 year old son were camping on his family's plot of land on a cliff area of lake Erie. We got dropped off and we made s'mores and hot dogs and had a campfire and some beers andy son had been in the tent sleeping for a couple hours and then we went in the tent to sleep ... All throughout the night before we went to bed I would walk back past the small clearing we had our camp and into the woods and would pee behind a large tree. I kept hearing stuff but I just assumed it was a deer or squirrel , I wasn't concerned or scared one bit. I had probably only been asleep for 15 minutes or so and I was awoken By footsteps outside my tent and very close like right outside my tent. I just thought my boyfriend Was out there pissing, getting some water or chips so I payed my head went down and rolled over and saw that my boyfriend was sleeping laying on the other side of my son... And there was still someone or something walking around my tent and camp and at that moment I became absolutely petrified!!! I very quietly woke him up and whispered very softly to listen. Right then, the footsteps were coming right up to my tent and then around to the side of tent where our heads were, and it started breathing very heavy and It's nose was up against the tent fabric and I then knew it was a bear! We were shitting bricks and luckily my son didn't wake up. The bear then walked away and slowly back into the woods but then returned a couple of minutes later and got in our cooler and took hotdogs, chips, crackers and was having a buffet. I looked out a 2 inch tiny section of the window through the screen and it was a bear and it was big!!! So, I started yelling and clapping and that startled him and he took off. But he came back 2 more times and repeated this and it was so terrifying and could have very quickly became a nightmare

Fed up with the gun nuts. If you want to have a gun to go camping, fine--go for it. You don't have to get mad at someone because *they* don't want a gun. I know a lot of experienced campers in Ontario and none of them bring a firearm on backcountry trips (unless they head to polar bear country around Hudson Bay). This wasn't even a backcountry trip...I was camped beside my car. Here in Ontario, Canada, there are a lot of restrictions on firearms that you may not be aware of as well. In my community, we have bears in town pretty much every day. Even more in the bush. People do not walk around with guns. If you are throwing insults, you probably live elsewhere and don't understand that. So keep your guns to yourself and lay off those who do not want one. If you want to make a pro-gun argument, that is fine...just use tact and have a discussion. Fair warning...from now on, if a comment includes an insult, I'm going to delete it. Speak to people like you're speaking to their face. Don't be rude. The macho bullies behind a computer screen are an epidemic in our online society. I'm open to a discussion.

I had a strange noise scratching outside my shelter once, and I was kept awake thinking the worst, as the scratching sounded louder and meaner every time it occurred. I stayed awake, imagining the worst, until dawn. At daylight, I went outside, apprehensive, looking all around me for some monster to pounce. I started a small fire and boiled water. As I sipped my tea, I heard that same scratch again. Just behind me, when I turned, I saw....a squirrel. A silly squirrel had been busy burying it's food stash all night. Sound is amplified at night, especially near water. Also, gravel makes a lot of noise. Near water, deer roam, as do raccoons, skunks, porcupines and yes, bears also, to drink from the lake. Just thought I'd share that. Imagination is your worst enemy out there.

I love watching them. Then I go back to sleep. I also want to know if it’s not a human! If it’s a shady ass human they’ll get a verbal warning. If they don’t leave. Then I’ll come out of my tent. They don’t want me coming out of my tent. After the verbal warning I’ll be standing there in my boxers and a hoody pointing my freedom dispenser at him. They don’t leave? They get 1 warning shot. once I was camping solo when, in the dead of night I was woken up by the shrill shound of a woman crying outside my tent. She wasn't just crying, she was almost wailing, so you can picture my spine getting frozen and all the hair on my body standing. After only a few seconds my mind was totally blown when the sound of the woman's wailing started sounding more like a baby crying. I was so scared that my ears started ringing and I could feel myself almost fainting. The madness of it is, when the baby crying began to sound more like the growling and snapping of small dogs, and I actually almost pissed myself, but my mind finally shot me an old memory of something I had read: that sometimes coyotes sound like women or children crying. To this day I tell myself what I heard were coyotes, because what else.

Over the past few years I've started setting up a trail camera outside my tent or hammock to capture what (if anything) comes lurking around while I sleep. After a winter trip a couple years ago in Algonquin I got home and plugged in the SD card and realized a wolf had been hanging around my hot tent completely unbeknownst to me. I often wonder what other things were there that I never even knew about! Also, it's amazing how something the size of a squirrel can manifest into bigfoot or a massive bear in your mind when you're alone at night. The forest sure takes on a whole new vibe at night.

This happened to me when I was backpacking solo. I had my earbuds in and just finished a movie around 11pm. When I took the earbuds out I could hear something right outside my tent. I was probably a good 2.5 hours away from the nearest road on foot and knew if anything happened I had no help anywhere nearby. I could hear whatever it was breathing and sniffing around my tent and it sounded heavy. Based on the breathing alone I'm guessing it was several hundred pounds. I tracked it by sound as it finally walked off, waited 15 minutes and got out of my tent to try and find tracks. I really wanted to know what it was but I couldn't find any good tracks. There were nothing but cold wet leaves on the ground and no tracks. Eventually I fell asleep but every sound after that woke me up.

I am glad you posted this as well since it might show those reticent about camping that being prepared and in tune with your environment is always better than being trigger-happy. While I do not discount the utility of tools (like firearms) I also know that our most impressive tool, as you've illustrated here, is our brain. Take care.

Jesus Mary and Joseph!! THIS is 2/3 of the reason I am so happy I'm getting my old inherited VW camper up and running again! I'm female and love to camp alone but I've had one too many bad nights like this one. Well most nights aren't this bad as this one but I still get very bearanoid regardless and am sure every crack of a twig or thump in the dirt is an effing bear. Actually one time I was camping on the Snake River (talk about black bear territory!), alone in my tent with two guy friends camping in their own tent about 10 or 15 feet away. On gravel, like you. I woke to the crunching gravel and heard several feet walking slowly like a big heavy animal - not two human feet. But it sounded like more than one. My friends instantly stopped snoring (tho later denied waking at all). I heard what sounded like one bear approaching one side of the tent (right next to my body), one on the other and one further behind. I'd gone to sleep bearnoid cause a bartender in town casually mentioned the bears often come down the hill at night scavenging for food and to be sure to pack ours away in the car at night. He said if one attacks, just look big and scream and throw things at it. That man effed up my whole night. After dinner I washed every dish clean as can be, double wrapped any scraps, locked it all in the car and made us all wash our hands and faces and brush teeth. Then I slept with one of those big magna (?) flashlights right next to my sleeping bag. When I heard the crunching gravel sound (about 5am but no light in sky I noticed yet) I very slowly grabbed the flashlight and slinked far down into my sleeping bag and held my breath as still as could be. I wanted to call no attention to myself. I was lying on my stomach and ready to fight with my stupid flashlight but my heart was beating so loudly that I was sure they'd hear it or feel it through the ground and they'd sense my fear and decide it was safe to attack! The bear closest to me - I KNEW it had to be a bear - then pushed its nose INTO my tent and sorta scraped it alongside it and it pushed a little into my sleeping bag as it went and made loud sniffing sounds. I thought I might actually die from a heart attack, truly. Then they passed and I didn't move an ounce until I heard nothing else for probably 10 solid minutes. I slowly came up to breathe (but not too far) then the emotional exhaustion probably made me sorta pass out. My friends said they didn't believe me (hmmm...) and as we were driving away some people way down by the entrance of the gravel riverside spot waved us down and said that they'd watched 3 bears walk past one of our tents early in the morning. They said they got up on their camper with binoculars to watch cause they walked past their camper first, which woke them!!! I knew my (chicken) friends were in the next tent over. If I'd been in your situation - truly alone - I would have been absolutely beside myself. I probably would have done what I did the other time. I think I'd be afraid to talk. Ever since that time I now always have the noise horn thingie like you do, a huge long hunter's type of knife, a flashlight with the setting that flashes blinding light, a sharp-edged hiking pole, haha, and a big ass can of bear spray. I camped alone last summer again (glutton for punishment) but just on Mt Hood at Timothy Lake and had all those things surrounding me. And still, every noise just about did me in. I agree the pepper spray would be a last resort but the first thing I'd probably use after the horn if I came face to face with it. I'm not a gun person but would be willing to learn how to use a shot gun however I'd never, ever own one, while my boys still live at home. And they say anything smaller than a shot gun would just piss a bear off. So this will have to do for now. Ugh can't wait for the camper!!! Sorry that was such a looooong story.

In '92, I took the boys camping by a small resort. It was a delightful little lodge with a lake nearby to swim. We had hiked and eaten well so we were pretty tired. I had the large-ish family dog in my tent and the two 12 year olds, my son and a friend, had a tent beside me. Suddenly, there was a commotion and Zoom! The dog was out the screen door without it being open. Much clicking and flapping before the dog came back. He had got rid of a swan that was sneaking around. We know now, keep big dogs and swans apart. Nobody was hurt. This video was a bit "Blair Witchy".

Once, me and my friend were camping outside in the wilderness and if you lived in Slovakia, you would know that brown bears are pretty common(not enough space for them due to deforestation, so they move towards human dwellings where are plenty of food sources= number of bears keeps rising). It happened in spring which means that bears are looking for some nutrients after hybernation. Although, we managed to hang our food in tree crown about 50 meters from our tent, we were not absolutely sure if it would helps. The "fun time" started few minutes after we went sleep. Something huge rubbed against our 25 years old tent which scared shit out of us. Me and my friend were no able to breath for about half a minute and instead we were listening what a bear or wendigo or any kind of entity was doing outside. In next five minutes the same thing has repeated dozen of times. Suddenly, some giant beast shaked with our tent like crazy and just then we found out that it was nice mountain breeze(we were camping at the top of small hill). Despite of our great discovery we both refused to prove if we are right :D At least we managed to fall asleep with mantra spinning in our minds:"it is just gentle wind, enjoy the nature! it is just a gen.." (sorry for all of the mistakes I have made, but my excuse is that I am not native speaker :D)

I always tell myself that bears are typically very quiet, until they rip open the cooler or something similar. If I hear something moving around, it's most likely a squirrel. They're the noisiest things in the whole north woods! That said, a couple years ago I woke in the middle of the night to hear something large splashing around in the river we were camped by. Since it was during a salmon run there was a possibility if was a bear. After a half hour I decided I'd never get to sleep unless I found out. Grabbed my pepper spray and crawled out of the tent. Turned out to be a moose feeding on the aquatic plants. Watched her for about 10 minutes (July in Alaska, so never completely dark) before she winded me or something and took off.

When I got to my campsite I realized I forgot my headlamp in my truck. I had just enough time to get a fire going and set up my tent. As it got darker, I got pretty scared, this is a guy that can throw his hands. I played worship music on my phone as I fell asleep and woke up to the most picturesque scene. It even included a deer in my campsite. I’ve heard many people after so long you just get used to it and the fear subsides. Cheers!

Somehow my family and everyone I knew growing up kept their homes and cars unlocked. 13yrs old home alone with my 2 yr old sister during the day. 3 men came to the house and sat in our driveway. Our dog was going nuts and wouldn’t let them out of their truck. I came to the door and they said they were there to put the lightning rods on our house. I had a crazy experience once camping in Algonquin park while I was sleeping,my friend and I spent weekend camping at Rock lake in Algonquin park one summer about 5 years ago and we were using my green laser pointer to point at a ton of objects we observed moving about and flashing lights in the sky as if they were communicating with each other so after this amazing experience we hit tent to sleep it was a two room with a front screen porch for bugs.We settled in for the night put the fire out and went to sleep.....sort of. I awoke to my zippers on my tent being open,at whatever time it was, it was still pitch black out.I had my eyes still closed thinking it was my friend next to me who maybe woke up to take a leak,he enjoyed drinking so he had a bit of a buzz on and I thought it was him staggering over to wrong side of tent,I heard a long ziiiiiiip then another long ziiiiiip and you know when camping I like to meet the zippers in the middle anyways I said out loud,"hey Brad, wrong side bro as I heard the zipping of tent door opening I repeated but louder hey Brad!!no response So I opened my eyes and to my total absolute terrifying sight was some creature which looked like it was half in the tent crouched down like a human would that dropped something on a floor and was fucking staring at me face to face with huge glowing green eyes!!!!!I freaked out and slapped the tent floor and ground as hard as I could and like a bullet this creature took off into the darkness with branches and shit breaking Now I have camped solo since but not there I can't even honestly say what the hell it was but I have never heard of an animal nicely opening the zipper of a tent,I tell you what I was scared! Over years of thinking what this could be I narrowed it down in the crypto zoology category and ufolgy. 1-alien or E.T. entity 2-adolescent sasquatch Final conclusion was whatever it was it was curious and looking at me it did not harm me but sure startled the shit out of me!Cheers hope you liked this true event story.

a couple years ago I went camping in traverse city Michigan. we camped in the campsites that don't have any power. the only power source was the bathrooms. these are also big sites with like 6 or 7 sand plots for people to put their tents. my friend and I stayed in the same tent and we took the farthest sand plot away from others and it was a little bit into the woods but you could still see us it wasn't like covered by trees or whatever. but it was raining and we were playing cards till like 2am. we started to hear something rub up against our tent and we heard footsteps. at first, we thought it was my cousin messing with us, but after listening to the light footsteps circling us we knew it wasn't him. I was both scared and excited because nothing like this has ever happened to me before. we ended up calling that same exact cousin who we thought was messing with us to come out and save us lol. my cousin came out of his tent in his boots, a bucket hat for the rain, a whistle, a broom, and his phone for a flashlight. it was funny to see but anyway, it turned out to be a coyote circling us. and then to make this story even longer, my other cousin woke up in the middle of the night having to use the bathroom, she didn't want to wake up her husband so she went alone because it was actually really close. but she said she heard the coyotes howling off to the area my friend and I were tenting at. she said she booked it to the restrooms and because it was raining the lights were out to make things worse. she turned out fine though thankfully. but yeah, wish I got it on video but I was using my phone as a flashlight and was too scared to turn it off.

Had a bear outside my tent while car camping in algonquin with my wife and three young kids. My wife and I yelled and it took off. It was a major adrenaline rush...the sound of its heavy breathing is still very vivid in my mind. It was all over the campground that night and people were setting off their panic alarms for hours. The heavy breathing was very intimidating, but I have since learned it is a sign the bear itself is feeling stressed.

I solo camp 90% of the time and every tent I found had maybe 1 or 2 doors or 1 door 1 window and it frustrated me but finally, I found a tent that has 2 doors, 2 windows, so you can see all directions, and I love it. At least I know what's gonna eat me lol. Course I am lucky, I live in Iowa and I do carry, and no I'm not knocking anyone for not and I know you are in Canada, but it's a freedom here so far and at my old age, I appreciate any edge I can get lol. Had a huge pack of coyotes get pretty close Saturday night, but thankfully they moved off, I did considered just during the gun into the ground too scare them, but waited, and they moved along finally. I don't have any pets but my buddy was camping the last month with his dog and they came so the way up into camp surrounding his tent, he yelled and used a big stick to scare them off, thankfully it worked. He had to laugh because his dog slept through the whole thing, great watch dog huh lol. She's old though. Take care!

I had something similar happen to me when I went camping with some friends. As I’m highly allergic to any animal with fur, I woke up sneezing horribly and heard the sounds of pacing all around the tent (we stupidly took down the tent walls blocking the mesh windows to let some air flow through). Figured it wasn’t anything big because there was multiple animals (from the sounds at least) and my sneezing continued for a few hours until I fell back asleep. Found out in the morning that someone threw away some Burger King in our trash bag hanging from a tree, so probably some raccoons ransacking for a burger 😂

Wow...I used to do lots of solo wilderness camping in NW Ontario (Woodland Caribou area) and I was several days deep on some seriously remote lake camped on a small island when I was awakened in my tent by a large creature swimming towards my island. I could hear it breathing heavily as it came ever closer...I had absolutely nothing in my tent in the way of protection...I could see out of my tent through the netting in the door but it was pointed in the opposite direction as well as being pitch black outside...the beast reached my island and came ashore on some flat rocks next to my tent and just stood there breathing heavily while the water dripped off it's fur on to the rocks like a small waterfall...this went on for a good 5-10 minutes as I sat frozen in my tent...finally, it just wandered off to the bigger side of the island and crashed through the bush and was gone...even though I never saw it, I could tell it was huge by the location of it's breathing and the massive amount of water that dripped off it's body...most likely a moose but could have been a woodland caribou as well...I was more apprehensive than afraid as anything that could have happened, even accidentally, could have been catastrophic that far into the bush when you are alone...very exciting though...selah

@@tsundokus - If I were in your shoes I would have packed up after the guy ran off, hopped on my motorcycle, and hightail it out of dodge. Maybe the guy didn't want to scare you so he used that monotone voice which sounded creepy under the circumstances and the click of your gun ended up terrifying him more than he frightened you. It would be funny on the slim chance the guy writes on a RU-vid video camping section about his experience trying to (get help? borrow weed because his supply ran out?) from another camper and ran away fearing for his dear life. Things like this is why I have never gone camping and don't want to. I only camp at hotel rooms and even then I have a steak knife next to me on the night stand. Backcountry Angling Ontario I’m talking about Sasquatch. I don’t want to freak you out. You have a great channel and certainly wouldn’t want to hinder your adventures and fun. Some Native American tribes refer to them as the forest people. I considered the subject a joke. But after watching one dig through a fallen tree, I assume looking for grubs , I was forced to accept the fact that these things are real. This happened in northern Maine a few years ago while on a canoe camping trip. This creature didn’t notice me as I rounded a point to enter a cove in the lake. At first I assumed it was a bear. Then it turned around as it stood up and looked at me. It then took a couple of steps and was gone. It changed my life. I really wish I had never seen it. Oh well, Happy Holidays, keep up the great videos !

Yeah, man. I did a back country hike from Hinton to Miette hot springs as an 18 year old. In the middle of the night, laying in my tent, I was awoken to the sound of bushes crashing and an animal bounding toward my exact spot. Within seconds it was on top of me and collapsed my tent. But just as quick as it happened, the animal bounded off through the clearing and into the bushes on the other side. I was so terrified that I just lay there with my eyes wide, tent collapsed on my face, all night. I couldn't see any prints in the morning and never did figure out what the heck happened. However, that was the beginning of my now, very deep seeded, irrational fear of bears.

When I was camping with my dad in 2016, we found a old swimmers cabin meant for dressing. We decided to set up our tents in there and we made a makeshift door with some planks and bigger objects lying around. We placed all our items infront of it. And a paddle from the canoe in such a manner that it would fall over when it got hit. At like 4 am the paddle fell and we're both terrified, we started screaming to scare shit off and we brth drew our knives. Then we heard something run off after all that. We did go out to check if it didn't take some of our stuff. We found that our tarp was around 4m from the cabin. To this day we have no clue what did it, but our best guess it a bear. But they shouldn't be in Glaskogen National Park in Sweden...
