Maintenance free battery caps Deka East Penn

Quick video of cap removed from a “maintenance free” battery. If you have done any research on Flooded Lead Acid batteries you will know there is no such thing as a maintenance free battery of this type. To consider a battery maintenance free i believe it would be a Valve Regulated Lead Acid battery. Gel or Absorbent Glass Mat.
These batteries number 778DT made by East Penn under the Deka name are NOT maintenance free! Now i will be able to check electrolyte level and specific gravity of each cell.

Man your the best. Was trying to remove whole top. Under the sticker are all these caps easy to pull off and refill. I was charging on almost empty cell. Did 2 batterues and use so much distilled water. 1 of these 2 i just bought used at Kenny U Pull for 120$ cdn + taxes. Refilled it and 1 cell was half full. Damn... Hey, Thank you :)

This Post just keeps on giving. I have a Lawn Tractor battery that is only 2 years old. Peeled up the sticker and found It had these plugs too!

Ha ha yeah the only issue i would like to solve is finding a watering jug that fits in the holes and brings the water level up to the correct level. Like an actual maintenance battery.

@@ryanburbridge I keep a Basting Syringe for this reason. Has worked for years on car and boat batteries. Works on these tiny holes as well.

That open jump port exposed to dirt and water seems like it will corrode over time and put a lot of resistance into the jump circuit when you need to use it. Should at least have a cap on it.

Good catch. It definitely gets nasty. These have a pretty positive spring pressure they have to overcome when connecting and a good wiggle also helps scrape through the crud. Also i live in SoCal so perfect weather for exposed metal. Definitely recommend a cover for those that live in real weather country.

My one car has a over 5 year old Deka “maintenance free” battery and I’ve never added water to it and the voltage is good and it starts the car no problem. Obviously not saying you shouldn’t add water, just sharing my experiences. I have Deka’s in other vehicles and I like them.

They are definitely well made. But in your case i would definitely be ready to replace that battery. What type of vehicle is the battery in? I would guess an older small engine with not a lot of electrical load. I would also guess you drive over 45 min at a time. In another video i installed a batteryminder to keep my batteries topped off. Starting and driving short distances will take a toll on a battery. Thanks for sharing

@@ryanburbridge That one is in a 2010 Subaru Outback. Trips vary. More 15 -20. Some 45. (Excluding round trip). The car is used regularly but not always everyday. I just got Dekas for an electric golf car that I know I have to water but trying to figure out what is the best apparatus for doing so. I saw them auto shut off jugs or just plain funnels not sure what to get yet. I’ll check out your battery minder video, never really heard of them.

I have never looked myself. Just spent a few minutes and didn’t see any company marketing the exact plug. I will definitely be looking into this further. A couple of suggestions: First i would find a local battery recycler and see if they would be willing to let you have as many as you want. I’m in SoCal and can find these places anywhere. Second i would look for a plug that can fit. Possibly threaded. I’ll pull my plugs and get some measurements. Keep you posted.

Hey, Thanks for making this vid. How did you maintain this battery?
@ryanburbridge
@ryanburbridge 3 года назад
So this is considered a maintenance free battery but there are small holes under the sticker that have plugs in them. You can check the level and top off with distilled water as needed. Just make sure you have a good hydrometer that is calibrated for lead acid batteries and a good charger. I personally installed a desulfator and hook it up to a 110vac wall unit every day it’s parked. www.batteryminders.com/12v-onboard-desulfator

@@precisionbay6899 still running these batteries. I left the headlights on all day at my jobs yard at least three or four times over the last couple years. I always get caught when i leave the house in the dark and show up at the yard in the light. Brain gets going and i don’t see the lights on. I definitely think charging these everyday has helped.
