Maison Margiela is a name to know, launched by Belgian designer Martin Margiela, who’s creations have been breaking boundaries in menswear and women’s wear since 1988. Margiela’s first taste in working in the fashion industry was in 1984 when he started working at Jean Paul Gaultier as a design assistant. Four years later, he dove into the market himself and launched Maison Margiela while simultaneously becoming womenswear director at Hermes later in
1997. The label is known for its creative designs, dressing A-list celebrities on the regular, the brand has been featured on the front of editorial magazines and continues to make headlines for its unconventional runway collections.
The Replica Sneaker:
It was in 1994 when Martin Margiela decided the launch the first Replicas piece. Pieces such as shirts, dresses and accessories that were found in his studio were given a luxury upgrade. The inspiration behind the Replica trainers comes from a style of footwear from the Germain Army Trainer. Used during the cold war, the German army produced a shoe for indoor training but if trace the roots of the shoe back further, you’ll see that nobody quite knows who produced the shoe. In 1999 Margiela showed his models the re-worked replica trainers, washed and clean. However, he continued to splat paint on the shoes using fluorescent dyes and luxury suede finishes. From humble beginnings, the Replica shoe is now one of the most adorned silhouettes.
