The Los Angeles Unified School District voted Tuesday to approve a ban on students' cell phone use during the school day. LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho says the plan includes possible litigation against social media companies to protect students from addictive content. Board Member Nick Melvoin said widespread use of smartphones and social media by kids is "hamful to their mental health, distracts from learning, and stifles meaningful in-person interaction." The resolution, which will take effect by the spring 2025 semester, applies to the second-largest district in the U.S.
Carvalho joined LiveNOW from FOX's Andrew Craft to discuss how the district plans to implement the plan.
