I recently had my MOT so all the safety checks have been done along with a turbo and new exhaust. I am not a mechanic and this is just how I had done my service post MOT. This is just for entertainment but may help those who have never jacked up a car, know where the filter locations are. It's not that difficult. I did have problems getting the sump plug off but show my work around.
Future video will be changing breaks as I have had a £1000k quote vs £200 DIY!

Great movie. A lot of people struggle with this oil bolt. Impact gun is good to shake a tread.

yeah that's a great tip, I do have one but it's on the boat. I was going for the basic tools most people happen to have :-) I have just the oil change lined up in about a months time.

Thanks for the vid, useful info for my wife's recently aquired Astra J. Been using the suction oil change method for years. My last car an Audi A4 never had the sump plug removed on all the oil changes in the 12 years and 120k miles I owned it for and it's still going.

On my boat, I can't access the sum plug it's far under the engine, so I've been using the vacuum method, and it's worked great. I always film the realistic ways I've done things. I couldn't get the sump plug out and used the pump. I just brought a breaker bar so I'll give it another go when I change my breaks which should be next week and a couple of episodes away. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I always enjoy reading people's comments, answering questions, and improving with feedback. Thank you for liking and subscribing if you did :-) have a great day.

Well done. Serviced my cars, family cars and motorcycles all my life (65 now). Getting trickier with all electronics and codes appearing if you touch anything. With your engine flush need make sure heater is open as lot of sludge in heater radiator and very hard to change. The cardboard tip is very true. Catches everything nasty. Those insignias are very strong cars imo. Good for very high mileages, comfortable and cheap. Also don’t use a ratchet on tight bolts, use a fixed bar

Good tips, I'm going to replace the header tank probably next month. The float sensor (code 3) goes on and off. I do like the Insignia excellent motorway cruiser. Annoyingly the regressive tax system stings me (clean air zones) Hard to save money while the government shakes you down constantly fir just trying to make an honest living.

Love this type of video. Been wanting to work on my own car for a while now to save on costs and learn how to service, change brakes etc but never had confidence or equipment. I know enough I believe from RU-vid videos what to do just need to go for it and this helps a lot. 👍🏼

You can do it. We're sold the idea that things are overly complicated so that we have to go back to dealerships for services, etc. My car is held together with ducktape and hope. I want to keep it running for as long as possible, but it is at the point that I could do with a new vehicle. So while I save the money, I need to keep it running. I couldn't get the sum plug out, so I did a workaround. Believe in yourself. You only need some basic tools. I do recommend in the description a few. These will last a lifetime and conveniently in a cary case. Sure, you have a few one-off cost, but thev will pay for themselves. If you get really stuck, there are mobile mechanics around. The hardest part is accessing the filters. Ads long as you're looking at them, and you twist to the left your OK. If you have a local mom and pop auto part store considering buying from them. If you don't then as mentioned the amazon links are in there. Thank you if you have subscribed to my channel. I'll be doing the breaks in a few months.

I will do, I will be buying a few new tools for my upcoming car and boat maintenance videos. Some of them are a little less common than the socket set so I'll show the set up. If they are any good I'll leave the link in the description. If not then I won't bother. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. I always appreciate people's comments, questions and feedback. Thank you if you liked the video and subscribed.

No worries, good luck it's really helped with the motivation when people like and subscribe. I'll be doing the breaks in a few weeks. Apparently they're meant to be done every 50k miles. I've done 60k since having the car over 3 years. Although mot didn't even show advisories

Really baffles me why garages charge so much for these jobs. Any mechanic would be able to change the filters in minutes. It's not the mechanic's fault it's the big name garages/websites as independent garages are nowhere near the amount. however, I do my own servicing as well and as you say it is very rewarding and hopefully for future life I can help my kids by changing brakes, oil etc and save them some money and play the proud dad card lol. if you do change the brakes would be good to see a video of that too. I am going to attempt mine later this year as noticing some stuttering while braking.

Firstly I'd like to say thank you for taking the time to comment and like the video. It's great to see people's feedback so I can continue to try and make better videos. I guess a lot of it comes to cost of premises, rent and business rates and training staff. But it does seem excessive sometimes on. I'll also film the breaks. So be sure to subscribe I plan to do it in a couple of weeks.

All nice , quite good videos but i hate that type of oil change . It never gets all properly ... each to their own i guess but i prefer the old fasion sump plug and let it drain for a good while .
@serenitycoastUK
@serenitycoastUK 4 месяца назад
Yeah, the sump plug had got stuck they can be a ball ache to get off. I tried a breaker bar along with overnight having penetrative oil sprayed on. So it was plan B which I measured that I pretty much got over 95% of it out. You would think they would just put a ball value/ tap on so you can easily get all the fluids out. If I designed a car all the filters would be in the same way access location along with drain valves. Then again they want you to go and spend your money getting these things done. I like the subru outback filters are on the top of the engine and you can touch it with your hand as easy as the oil cap.
@gabrieloltean5765
@gabrieloltean5765 4 месяца назад
@@serenitycoastUK If you get the sump plug off you can fit your own ball valve and its cheaper than a " pro magnetic " sump plug . I get where you going woth the design. I did an oil change yesterday on a 1.4 tfsi Audi but its VW engine . If you have ever seen that you would think at first glance they where thinking of the mecanic untill you take the oil filter off and realise there is no way to take it off without soaking the alternator in used oil ... the car just burned through the second alternator . Nevertheless in your case i understand the reason and you might be batient enough to wait for the vacum to get most oil out but in a service station they dont wait ... had the fist oil done on my 2014 insignia by the dealer as it was included in price ... wish i never let them ... shit oil like water and it went dark in 30 seconds from the first engine run ... 1 week later did it again with decent oil filter and roughly 2 hours of wait for all the oil to drop down . On a different note from your point of view what is the best oil for the 2.0 cdti ? I am between motul and manol but i see a lot fo people use the shell you had in the video . I do 25 to 30 k a year so do quite a few changes .. and the best option financialy is the 20l jug mannol energy premium dexos 2 but i would rather use something better even if i spend an extra 10 15 quid on a change ( not a pro mecanic )

@serenitycoast trust me that craps on tight! I would suggest next car get japanese as they're reliable. German cars are also great they will last forever only issues I would say is German cars are usually owned by idiots that don't know maintainence so when you buy one could be full of problems. My 1.9TDI 2008 golf is amazing love it wouldn't Change it for anything else atm it's the perfect for me
@volt8684

Hardly a service. More an engine service. The brakes should be done too. Even if only clean and re grease. I usually get 40-50k from discs pads. I take them apart clean and degrease everything once a year. You can feel on the pedal if they are toast. The sump plug should never be hard work, someone’s overtightened it. Always use a new washer. I buy the cheap copper crush ones as I change once a year

Which way does that blue seal go round on the fuel filter housing? Some tutorials have the thin side pointing up and others pointing down.

For the fuel filter it's the same shape on my one so either way. There was no arrows, if you can reference the time stamp I can take a closer look. It's time to do another service so I'm back on the boat and picking up tools. Ill be doing a filter, oil change probably a shorter video. Just wanted to ask in twrns of the coolant, i was convinced that the vauxhall approved for these engines is the RED and only red coolant so is that Prestone one ok?
@serenitycoastUK
@serenitycoastUK Месяц назад
I used the Preston one for about 5 months now. The label states "Prestone provides corrosion protection for 300,000 miles. Works in all extremes from -37°C to 129°C and is suitable for all cars and light commercial vehicles. Appropriate for adding to any other coolant/antifreeze." I wanted to use it as it's available all over plus supermarkets. So incase of a leak I can just run into Tesco. If your doing a full flush you may want 2 bottles as it goes via the heater matrix. (put the heater on full) I used one bottle and it's why it's still a bit red. I did a video changing the coolant tank as a couple months later the tank started leaking. The float sensor before the service also sometimes came up with "code 3" which is check coolant level.
