Many consider Kevin VanDam to be the greatest of all time, but he didn't start out that way...hear his story in his own words in this edition of MLF Origins.
My father was a great bass fisherman. No Kidding! I was born in 1960. I remember creek fishing with my dad. As early as 1964. He was a giant of a man. Later on when I was ten. My Dad bought a 16 ft V bottom Alumium boat 40 horse Johnson and a trolling motor. He put down plywood and covered it with indoor outdoor carpet. Then bought a Lawrence fish finder. He worked night's on a Trucking dock in Indianapolis. We fished when ever we could. Some times I would get to skip school just to go fishing. When he got home. He would tell me to be ready. With lunches made and all the tackle sitting in the garage. He would come home early at 4:00 am. Load the boat on to the Chevy Station wagon. Fill the back up with his rod's amd reel's and all his fishing tackle. It takes alot of time loading and unloading for just one fishing trip. Maybe we would go to Lake Monroe, Tippicanoe River ,Lake Erie or even Morris Reservoir and Turtle Creek. But the best was Kentucky Lake! One big body of water. He caught alot of his PB's there. It was Hallowed ground. I am 59 years old now! He's been gone since 1996. Evertime I fish. I think back to a special time in my life where a father took the time to teach his son how to fish and enjoy the out of door's. It's in my DNA! Couldn't cut it out of me if I tried. Thanks, To all the Dad's, Grand Pa's, Uncles, Brothers, and Cousins. Who took the time to take someone fishing. Its a great sport! SHAWN
I've only fished 6 tournaments, won 2, and placed 4th in the others. I should of stayed with it but life got in the way. I still fish but looking back tournament fishing was/ is very stressful almost takes the fun out of fishing. I love watching MLF!

I been hooked on fishing ever since I was in diapers I went years without fishing my health so bad the dr. said im going to die if I don't get out this chair...my kids said daddy they having a tournament bass pro shop putting it on they paying thousand dollars a hour to big fish will you go with me you can sit in the chair in the boat just as good as you can sit here they trying get me out chair..so I did an I won the boat....I had 4 back surgerys I was parlized from waiste down an heart attack I died I had heart surgery...I couldn't hardly walk up on stage but this was one of the moments like when I caught my first bass
You really don't go out much don't you?!....There is a few tournaments around that do it, across the US and even in Canada they have big fish tournaments with hourly weight ins for big fish..
that is my story on being a boater, these guys front end you so bad in bass! i have a boat but cant use it because of the one and very small livewell. you have to be in the drawing for additional boater so it makes it impossible. I believe you have to fish your style and its rare to get matched up with a style comparison.
yep I can relate to kvd I was hooked on bass fishing still in diapers I caught my first bass with a 2o2 it was over 8lbs I caught him right beside the boat ramp were guys putting in there 30 thousand dollar boats not catch nothing lmao
I remember my dad had a big worm it was 12 inches long I pitched such a fit wanting this on my rod he kept saying they want bite that my mom got mad said just tie the worm on there my god an I went caught a bigger bass than he ever caught hehehehehhe
The biggest pansy Madonna of them all! You turned your back on BASS after all they've done for your life! Unbelievable, go fish the MLF ( Madonna Fishing League) I'm staying with the true organization and competitive fishing!
Your just a stupid idiot veteran fishing with Brian, you don't have a clue. Kvd isn't a pansy, he didn't turn his back on bass. Mlf will never be like the bassmasters but it's pretty dang cool if you watch. I would leave to knowing that I had a fan like you.
