Hey, yet another old fart mech/tech...I'm 76. In my day there were difficult engines to work on, but modern engines have so many more technical/electronic things included. But the mindset remains the same. And experience pays, repeat procedures lend to knowing where fasteners go (if they are different in places). Ray is of that caliber. Amazing watching his experience showing.

It's great to see people taking care of their vehicles. I don't think a lot of people realize that even a major repair like this is worthwhile on a vehicle that is still in good shape, because the cost of a new truck is just way too much these days.
@johncooper4637
@johncooper4637 22 часа назад
Amen to the cost of a new truck. I could not afford to spend over $80k on one, but I will make do with my 96 12 valve Cummins.
@Tread1775

Today’s small truck, Ranger, Tacoma, Canyon are bigger than the 1/2 ton from the 80’s. Priced absurdly high, just like the current full size pickup. I would love to still have my Nissan Hardbody XE, single cab, mt, with the bench seat. Maybe with the faux Maverick truck, other manufacturers will begin to offer a real 4X4 small truck at a reasonable price. Dreams come true sometimes. ✌️
@russianrick8403
@russianrick8403 13 часов назад
@@Tread1775 I think the reason most people don’t get the smaller pickup trucks is that they don’t offer much improvement in fuel mileage over the bigger trucks. I talked to a guy who sold his Tacoma for a duramax to save money on fuel.

Trucks are way to expensive .
@Tread1775
@Tread1775 7 часов назад
@@russianrick8403 The Hardbody I had was rated at 17 mpg. The newer 2.0 & 2.5 NA engine gets better than that. In a small truck from back then with the newer 4 cyl NA would get much better mpg. I think the weight of a new small truck similar in size to old version with new engine tech, less all the unnecessary options would do well. The crazy Subaru Baja from the late 2000’s was estimated at 21-27. It can be done, but heaven forbid a manufacturer tries that with an attractive 4X4 these days. Must not be enough exorbitant profit for them. Really irritates me that I can’t get a small body on frame 4X4 with basic interior. There’s a market waiting for it. Most are tired of the prices for full and midsize trucks. ✌️
@1crustyoldmsgtretired870

This truck is definitely a keeper. Seems like the repair is happening at the right time. I remember going to look at a truck with a 5.4 Triton engine in it. It was parked on a street corner with a few other cars, (Y'all know these places lol). Anyway, the owner shows up with a gallon of oil and proceeds to dump a GALLON in before hitting the key... I truly admired the owner's positive outlook when he stated it ran great. It ran OK for a five cylinder if you could get past the clunking noises from the bottom end. Bless his heart.

Nice to see a customer who has looked after their vehicle,and is prepared to spend the money on the preventative maintenance to keep it going another 150 thousand miles. The Ford 5.4 2 valve found on the E-250/350 vans, if maintained, is good for 350-500,000 miles once the cam chain tensioners are swapped out for the older but stronger machined steel ones. Ford went for performance on the F pickups series and developed the 3 valve head with variable valve timing based on oil pressure, then screwed the oiling up by replacing the steel cam chain tensioners with cheap plastic ones which as you see here is a major failing point.

I’m referring to other videos where you mention the backlash for using additives. I worked at a major motor oil company in the 90’s that somewhat condemned these additives. Those opinions stopped later when they purchased several additive companies but, I bet the influence of those claims still exists. One of their major commercials promoted 3000 miles or 3 months for oil change intervals. Additives work. I have oil fired injectors in my diesel and one was sticking. A quart of additive and 15 minutes later, it was unstuck.

You will have to disconnect the starter wires too so you can pull the harness forward to clear the mounting stud on the timing cover. Unbolt the a/c compressor to unplug the crank sensor.

Replacing the chain guides and other timing stuff in a 2.2R was the first major job that I ever did.

I sadly own one these engines... I truly love my 07'Fi150, with the exception of some pesky oil leaks. It has become the time for a new chain set. I am taking precise notes, that I may be able to do this will some assistance. I really hoping that part three will show the scraping and cleaning process... this is far from my old birds motor. Twice the cams, chains etc. As well as the reassembly phases. Thank you for anotjer awesome and educational video.🙏💜

I’m an old guy that’s got a 10 foot bull whip, it’s a 16 plait, if we could find the engineers, that designed, an engine, that they knew would have to have all this labor, to repair,or replace the timing chains or PLASTIC tensioners, I’ll volunteer my time for a whipping! Would you please tell us how many labor hours you have, on this job, serious question!
