Major Soviet Planes of WW2

Have you ever heard of a Yak 3, a Ilyushin Il-2, or a Polikarpov I-16? The air war on the eastern front in World War 2 doesn't get nearly the press that other sectors of the conflict receive. Yet the Soviets had a large air force and made major advances in airplane design throughout the war, eventually reaching parity with the Luftwaffe. This video is a brief overview of the major Soviet planes from the start of the war through the end, together with some comparisons with their German counterparts.

Lavanovich? Do you mean Lavochkin. Also, your information on the lagg is flaud, the lagg was made out of many layers of compressed wood covering each layer was a chemical extract, making the compress very very hard, but heavy (more of a plastic than wood), this however made the plane very sturdy and almost immune to flames, the compress didn't catch fire. The main reason why the lagg was dicontinued were the motors, which were used for yaks(that are overall better than laggs in manouverability, but lack the protection of the lagg).Laggs were pretty good planes, the finnish army captured some of them and considered them to be very modern and efficent planes, painting blue swastikas on them and making them their own. The main reason why the la-5 were great is because, there wasn't any competition between the yak's and the la's, different motors means twice as fast of the production, considering the two were astonashing planes that easily matched the 109's and 190's, it was a great deal for the soviets. edit: but the information on everything else was on point(I think), not disencouraging you, great job overall, just make sure you have the right information.

Thank you for your comment. The Lagg was the better of two mentioned fighters that the Soviet’s started the war with. However from what I read the wood frame did not prove resilient to enemy fire. ww2db.com/aircraft_spec.php?aircraft_model_id=64 I do not doubt that the Finns used some captured models, since the Finnish Air Force was also a bit behind the times. Thanks for watching and commenting.

The I-16 was an amazing plane when it was built in the early 1930s, and even at the start of WWII its four rifle calibre machine guns were ShKAS machine guns that fired at 1,800 rounds per minute each, which is triple the rate of fire of the British 303 machine guns used in their fighters at the start of the war. The four ShKAS machine guns could fire more bullets per minute than 12 British 303 machine guns. More importantly some versions of the I-16 were armed with 20mm cannon which were rather more effective against air and ground targets than any machinegun including the 50 cals of the American fighters. The Americans used HMGs because their cannon were not reliable, not because they were better. The LaGG-3 had an inline piston engine. It was later models like the La-5FN and La-7 that used radial engines and were excellent fighters, every bit as good as anything the Germans had. The allied pilots with the highest scores flew Soviet planes. Being made of wood made the planes easier to damage, but also much easier to repair and support near a front line. The BF-109 was better than the I-16 because like the Hurricane the I-16 was obsolete when the war started, though of course the I-16 was rather more obsolete than the Hurricane was at that time. The Soviets ended the war with MiG-9s and within a few years had the MiG-15 which was superior to anything the Germans were working on.

The Polikarpov I-16 did NOT have 4 wing mounted guns. Early models up to the type 16, had 2 guns in the cowling, above the engine and 2 More in the wings... sometimes. Later models (Type 18 to 28), changed the wing machine guns for 23mm cannon. Do some actual research.... your "facts" on the Lagg 3 are also incorrect. The subtypes of that Also had varying weapons fits, and usually only 2 or 3 guns ir cannon.

LOVANOVICH!? WHAT THE? come on brother. it's a LOVOCHKIN, lol, not a LOVANOVICH:) WW2's greatest Allied Fighter Ace flew one of these planes, get the name of it right, it's too important. And the name of the Ace is KOZHEDUB, not Kodjin!

@@AnotherBoringTopic NO no and NO:) ! it's very simple, it's a LAVOCHKIN and it's KOZHEDUB, it's pronounced as it's written. These two words are too important to WW2 aviation to get completely wrong. Slight mispronounciations are ok, but you are not mispronouncing them, you are actually saying different words! This totally confuses and misleads people. Please keep making videos, but please please please do research and at least use Google Translate to hear how the 'important' words are pronounced before making a video about them! How would you feel is someone made a video about a 'Sitar'? When they mean 'Spitfire'? the "mispronounciation" is way too extreme. Or 'Casandra' when they mean 'Corsair'? you get the point

You forgot the Yak 9. It was flown by a free french squadron who also had experience with Spitfires and Mustangs and declared the Yak 9 superior to both. The Luftwaffe issued an order to NOT engage Yak 9 at all. One Soviet squadron killed 27 FW 190 and one Bf 109 for the loss of two Yak 9.

Lagg-3 construction of wood did not make it vulnerable to enemy fire, it made it tough and resilient. Added to this was a simple but effective fire suppressant system, that made the Lagg very tough to bring down. The wood construction made it HEAVY and therefore underpowered, and was very hard for novice pilots to handle.
@External2737

Wood is tough versus machine guns. Extra vulnerable to exploding (mortor) cannon rounds. The wood in Russian aircraft is why the Germans went cannon happy.
