Major Taylor: The fastest black cyclist you've never heard of celebrates the black history of cycling and accomplishments of this often forgotten black cyclist. In many regards, Marshall "Major" Taylor was the Michael Jordan of his day and a superstar with unparalleled talent and ability. In the early 1900's Major Taylor stood as a cycling World and American Champion, held 7 world records, and was unmatched during his career. Yet this Black American Cycling Champion and cyclist of color is not celebrated, widely known, or truly appreciated. This video borrows on history and the work of countless others to honor the memory of Marshall "Major" Taylor.

Nice video! I learned about Major Taylor about 20 years ago. At the tine I couldn't believe how I'd never heard of him. But then, of course this is typical in America. I was appalled when his image was used in a Hennessy ad in 2018 or 2019. He was known for advocating temperance, yet the first commercial use of his image was for alcohol. That is so wrong on so many levels. Yet another slap in the face to his legacy. I know there has been talk for many years about a feature film of his life in the works but it hasn't come to pass.

@Rando Recumbent, Major Taylor was absolutely amazing. The more I researched the more humbled and impressed I became. The Hennessy ad was a mixed blessing for certain. A blessing because it brought Major out of obscurity; a cure just as you stated association with alcohol. I am hopeful that others find this video, the links to other videos, and resources purposeful in remembrance to the one and only Marshall W. "Major" Taylor.

I stumbled across this during black history month, and this is an amazing story with a sad ending. I am glad that those that raced with and against him had the foresight to make sure that he was properly remembered. I am hoping to see and hear many other great stories like this during the month. BLM!

I have been a pro cycling fan since the 1980s, but the first I ever heard of him was 2-3 yrs ago, when my son found his bio at the bookstore and gave it to me at Christmas. When Biniam Girmay won his first classics race in 2022, the commentators made it plain that this was freakish because no non-European ancestried person had ever done this before. Because of the biography, I was stunned that no one mentioned Major Taylor. Apparently, no one who raced prior to WWII is even remembered.

That is an unfortunate truth. Prior to researching MT for the video, sadly I was not fully aware of his accomplishments either. However, I’m grateful that we are able to be a part of his legacy and remembrance.

Thank you for the video sir! I recently learned of Major Taylor after looking for some motivating artwork for my now completed home gym. I have gotten into indoor bike training and was looking for a poster showing black cyclists. I was surprised to see that there wasn't much out there (or that I could find). That's when I came across some pictures of Major which led me to find out more about him. I've since gotten the audio book titled "Major Taylor" and I'm learning about his life experience. Thanks again for the bringing his story to the forefront. You did a great summary of his life's journey.

Major Taylor is an amazing cyclist and even more amazing person. He was a man of character because of his faith in Jesus Christ. This was seen when he was racing. In spite of the white riders teaming up against him to prevent him from winning, he still would win and would do it with class. Literally, in the whole world of cycling, he was the Michael Jordan of his day. He is my hero.
