I picked up this stickybacked world map cork board a few years ago, but the room to tack things to it was very limited and the adhesive started to fail after moving it around a couple times. I decided to finally do something about it!
The roll of cork material I picked up was 24" X 48" so I based my design off that. I managed to get all the pieces need for the frame from a single piece of walnut, 1" thick, 7" wide and 60" long. I used bridle joints on the corners and for asstetics only added brass rod accents to the corners and the centers of the long sides. A rabbet was cut into the back of the frame so the cork would sit flush. I finshed the frame with a dark walnut danish oil. I like using the dark stain on dark wood, it doesnt change the colour, it just highlights the beautiful grain.
I used spray adhesive to attached the cork to some cardboard to give it some rigidity and to provide a place for the push pins to go without hitting the wall. I lightly dusted the cork backer with grey and blue paint so it would contrast the map cut outs. I also used spray adhesive to permanently attach the world map to the cork backer. That works really great, but as you can see in the video, its impossible to fix any mistakes (soory Africa). I stapled the cork/cardboard assembly into the rabbet on the back and hung it up in my office.
