Make a drill powered DISC SANDER

How to use the homemade drive shaft with bearings to make a drill powered disc sander. To build this disc sander I don´t need to make a drill attachment, but I do have to make an attachment for the drive shaft. And to make this diy disc sander I also use the plywood disc I made in a previous video.
How I made the plywood disc: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ds2xkuMHi-E.html
How to make the driving shaft with bearings: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_k8PXXAsAWc.html
More details in my woodworking and diy blog: enredandonogaraxe.club/en/disc-sanding-attachment-for-drill/

this is a good project from beginning to end. i especially like the bearing assembly you came up with and enjoyed seeing your process. it looks like the threaded rod you used in the final version was ss, which is going to be stiffer and more stable as a shaft than the mild steel it looked like you were using earlier. i realize this is an old post, but here are a few more comments for anyone who's interested: 1) i dont know why you didnt glue the two disc pieces together and then true it, 2) truing would have been safer, easier, more accurate, and removed less material if you used sandpaper wrapped around a straight board instead of a chisel. sandpaper around a straight board is like having a chisel as wide as the entire piece. ditto for rounding against the edge, 3) it would be better to glue the entire square piece of sandpaper to the disc and then cut excess with a knife, right? then you dont have to be exact with centering it when using contact cement, 4) if hook& loop sandpaper is available in your size, it would be an option to glue on a hook pad to make for quicker sandpaper removal and replacement and allow reuse, 5) a couple layers of shellac or varnish would help stabilize the finished product

You are very smart. The sander work's great. It seems to work as well as the one I paid too much money for. I love your how to videos. If I had your skill set, I wouldn't buy any more tools. Thanks for sharing.

+Sergio Acuña Padin : Ha, Ha, I think that about ALL my projects - they look so simple when I draw them, but in one way or another, they take much longer to make, than I had anticipated 😯

I'm in the process of building one for myself. Just a small-ish disc ( 20 cm / 8" ) but that fits my needs and motor. 2000 RPM is a bit much for a large disc. Having a bit of trouble to mount the motor so it doesn't move when I press against the sanding disc but I'll figure something out. Thanks again for the inspiration!

Thank you for video if you attach stripes of self adhesive velcro you can use removable discs so changing grits is simple and a velcro strap will hold drill still

Looks good! If you put a wheel behind the sanding disk, touching on the opposite face from where you sand, you could prevent pushing on the disk from making it wobble. Perhaps more than one wheel there would help to align the disk and keep it aligned.

Great video. Awesome use of an old drill. One suggestion. I noticed the drill hopping around under torque when pressure is applied to the sanding disk. Might help keep things steadier to sturdy up the other end of the drill so there is absolutely no movement.

Given the varying density of plywood, you'd be much better off using MDF, which will have a much more uniform weight distribution and be much less prone to wobbling as a result. Also, definitely cut the circle using a jig! Still, you made it work in the end and that's what counts. :-)

Hey Sergio my son and I love your videos we have made a few of your projects here in Australia. Just wondering when the sand paper has worn out do you have to build a whole new disc or can you just glue on a new piece of paper?.

very cool man, the deviation in the disc is reduced when it spins to probably almost nothing and mounting the drill to the base behind the chuck might help, it could also be the threads in the rode (i made mine pretty similar :)) do u still get any wobbles? very nicely done btw, and u also have a lathe now.

Cred ca problema este discul, realizat manual. Pentru precizie si echilibru era necesara executatea lui la strung. Erau evitate astfel multe batai de cap. In rest, felicitari!

The cost of wood required $15. Cost of Harbor Freight Sanding machine (with one sand paper) $20. Why would I invest 2 hours and be frustrated if the surface is not plain.

Hook up a vacuum cleaner to a small box surrounding the lower half of the sanding disc and it should capture most of the dust.
