Jenny Doan demonstrates how to make a super easy Happy Trails quilt out of 5 inch squares of precut fabric (charm packs). For this quilt pattern, Jenny used Mrs. Miller's Apprentice Charm Packs by Pam Buda for Marcus Fabrics. This simple project is based of the old classic known as the snail trail block, monkey wrench, Indiana puzzle, Journey to California, and Whirligig, but this version is "sew" much easier!

Jenny DOES rock, Ruth, you're right! [ I haven't found a YT video that doesn't have any thumbs down. I think there are users out there who get some kind of perverse pleasure out of down-thumbing videos... because it's free to them, they think nothing of it. Shame. These are the types of folks who have never provided a free service/favour to anyone in their lives, is my guess. It's the internet. You just have to ignore it. ]

Thanks you Kathy for sharing your method with Jenny. I am using this method to make a Snail Trail Al Fresco quilt. I found that when I added the last 4 larger triangles (2 white and 2 colored), that I had to sew them on with a narrower seam allowance to keep from cutting off the corners of the 4-square patch in the center (at about 3/16" instead of 1/4"). Then when the block was completed, I squared it up with an 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" template ruler and it came out perfectly with very little waste or trimming. So much easier than other methods. Love it!

For those in the know, it is a reference to a song that Dale Evans wrote .She and her husband, Roy Rogers, sang this together for their radio program in the 40's, and their movies and TV shows in the 40's & 50's. Since this pattern is just another step further from the quilt pattern of "Snail Trails", a nice segue was the named "Happy Trails" quilt pattern.
