Make a Leather Laptop Case // DIY TUTORIAL
Making a Leather Laptop Case is a fun DIY Leather crafting project. Most laptops have slightly different measurements, so in this video we show you how to measure your specific laptop (we use a Macbook Air) to make a custom, one-of-a-kind leather laptop case that perfectly fits your laptop.
We're using a new leather from Hermann Oak called Expedition 1881, a VERY cool water resistant leather that is 100% veg tan and treated with Hermann Oak's "Oak Guard" technology in the tanning process. This leather is a bit soft like a milled veg tan, and super supple -- it's really a treat to work with for hand sewing and would be perfect for a medium weight leather sewing machine :)

This video, along with the "designing wallets", and the "Pink Tote-bag" videos, have been the BESTt of all!! Seeing the procedure of how the patterns are made, cluing us in on what can be considered "standard" dimensions and allowances, etc. has been magnificently helpful. ...and by the way... I've adopted your stitching technique as well for almost all tasks done with the stitching chisel, and using the pony when awl work is called for. MANY THANKS!!!

This video got me started on a very ambitious goal... Yes, I completed the project, it looks fantastic, but I over engineered it and took me weeks of refining my laptop case. I did use the same 1881 HO Expedition leather, but lined it with pig skin, included magnetic buttons and a Loxx snap closure. Thank you so much for endless headaches 😉 I'm actually finally getting away from my previous profession and starting up in Leathercraft now.

I’d be inclined to cut a quarter inch strip of doubled up leather, and make a welt (is that the right term?) for additional thickness. It would also add a bit more rigidity to the structure of the bag. Maybe a single 5/8” strip doubled over? Beautiful bag! I’m going to try this. Might add a pocket for a charger. And a handle, perhaps. Or not. 🤗

I was wondering about that would magnets damage the batteries in the laptop
@jamesthe-doctor8981
@jamesthe-doctor8981 3 года назад
@@scarlethenderson6510 it wouldn’t damage the batteries because there’s no ferrous “magnetic” metals in them. If you had a really huge magnet it may be possible to damage the data on the hard drive, but it would have to be WAY bigger than the magnets used for something like this. In fact, it would have to be so big and powerful that it would be more dangerous to your fingers than your computer.

Thanks for the idea of installing snap buttons without damaging the laptop
@AndreaFromTokyo
@AndreaFromTokyo 3 года назад
i really don't like the look of it. The better way would have been to install the snaps before glueing the two parts together but for ease of use i'd rather have some strong flat magnets embedded between the two layers. All of this is just my opinion and preferences. The snaps ended up looking like nipples xD Edit: Would have added a "pull tab" in the front facing the opposite of the flap so you could pull on that while taking out the laptop too.

Keep watching these videos. And others. Pick a small project to start with. I bought a “kit” from amazon with tons of odds and ends for tools. I bought cheap scrap leather in 10# lots. My first projects were making cases and containers for my tools. Sleeves for knives, a needle holder, roll ups for punches and other tools, etc. as you learn, replace the tools you use the most with better quality options. I’ve been doing leather work for 5-6 years I think. I’ve got a lot of tools now. I built my own stitching cradle. Enjoy it! Great hobby.

Math says that two points define a line, is the third point to basically try to track and reduce error?
@Corter
@Corter 3 года назад
We're looking for a parallel line, not just a line - so it's not really a case of the definition of a line. If you only do two points measured from the first line and one is off (at all), you're not going to draw a parallel line. The third point is to guarantee you've got a parallel line, sometimes I'll do 4 or 5 points if I'm cutting a very long piece
@JackRyanRobtics
@JackRyanRobtics 3 года назад
@@Corter I understand. This is a least squares regression. Thank you this has both answered my question and solved some of the issues I've been having as a maker. I've been measuring using a square all this time and felt like I've needed 3 hands. Putting 3 or 4 dots and drawing regression is less painful and at least as accurate. Thanks again!

could of you put the snaps in before you put in the liner?, if you had not done the liner untill about the same time you had done the snaps?
@wedgetailleather
@wedgetailleather 3 года назад
Yeah totally could have... but I don’t think it was intended to use a liner until the weight of the leather became apparent, and you normally wouldn’t use a liner for thicker leather weights, which is more accessible for the average leather crafter. This method does show how you can protect the contents from the metal snaps when there is no liner, which is super useful in a number of applications. As you point out though, when using a liner there are better ways for more advanced leather crafters to hide them. Add the base of the snap first, add the liner, and then figure out where the cap of the snap belongs on the flap last. You can also get real fancy and hide the cap of the snap by attaching it to the liner before installing it, which would be especially good for magnets like some other posters have suggested... But again snaps are accessible for most Leathercrafters, and won’t risk harm to electronic devices.
@Corter
@Corter 3 года назад
Yep! You can do that as well, I just wanted to show how to do it if someone was using a single thick piece of leather instead of a lined piece. We also have another laptop case video where we do a more military style strap closure as well, and you could use the full leather sliding closure from the wet molded bag video, or magnets - lots and lots of options. I personally just use a slip case with no flap at all myself :)
