I watched this when it was published 7 yrs ago and was so inspired to make my own versions of a regular marking guage and mortice marking guages. Since then, I have sold 2231 of these beautiful guages with different types of woods combined with stainless steel, brass, acrylics, aluminum, and even a special edition made from curly walnut, birds eye maple and bronze plates. I couldn't find bronze in 1/6" or 1/8" thick plate, so I melted down some old bronze pieces I've collected over the years and made my own plates at a friend's foundry. Well, I watched and he poured into the molds. (ThereNo way I would get that close to industrial grade furnaces, even with the fire proof gear on, lol). I sold out before they were even made! All thanks to Young Je. The curved design at the top of his guages are so classical. Love them.

those marking gauges are so beautiful I need a mortise gauge and the one I was wanting is $50! Instead of paying that much money I'm going to make one. I love the contrasting wood

Quite beautiful, that's for sure. Function and form. I will have to admit that when you finished up the first glue-up, and started to true up the edges on the table saw, my first thought was..."Why is he cutting an ice-cream sandwich on a table saw?" ... LOL my brain is getting weird on me and I haven't had a drink or any narcotics in many years.

Beautiful craftsmanship. Did I understand correctly that the point you use for marking is from an old circular saw blade? That's in interesting idea and it would probably last a lot longer than the traditional nail.

Wish I lived in a time where most woodworkers/craftsman still used strictly hand tools. A time where only the big companies had power tools. The only thing I think about when I watch someone use power tools is laziness, and before you get mad.. I know that's not fair to think, and it's not right either. Everybody does things differently, and if you get a good result... who is to say it's wrong. I just personally wish more people used hand tools, and took the time to actually learn the traditional way. The feeling you get by completing a project by hand is such a better feeling. Love these marking gauges though! would love to have a pair :)

Hi which blade is good for hand plane?
@YoungJe
@YoungJe 7 лет назад
A thicker blade is recommended for the plane you make yourself,( Lie-Nielsen , or Veritas) In case of produced planes, a compatible date must be selected, in which case hooks are recommended www.hocktools.com/products/bp.html

The gauge is very nice. But I have to wonder what's the purpose of so much work for something so simple. Since the gauge is so intricate and colorful, why not put centimeter and inch marks the gauging stick? I could make one, and if he sold them I would buy one. But I prefer the simple Japanese gauges.

There's not a second of unnecessary time in this video, and every needed detail was covered. The video length is perfect. There is no annoying music, and his choice not to speak doesn't detract whatsoever from grasping the procedure. Poor advice, and I hope he doesn't choose to follow it. Excellent video, young je. Your plane videos are fantastic as well.
