Today we’re making something extra special! We’ll go from sketch to final plush as we design a character from scratch and turn it into a huggable cuddly plushie!
The character we’ll be making is Yesper, a bat like temple guardian who’s always down for a little fun!💜🦇

As a fursuit maker I can attest that fur especially teddy (I'm pretty sure that's is what your using) can be a pain, but can I just say I definitely love this plush I hope they have fun in their fungi and moss filled temple :3
@sewmicah
@sewmicah Год назад
From my knowledge of fur types, I don’t believe it is teddy, but thank you either way! (I’ve never been great with technical terms, I always just make up my own words, so I could be wrong lol!) I feel like this video made it seem like I don’t work with fur usually, but trust me, I do, quite a bit! My patterns just call for a lot of precision since they’re so small which leads to so many opportunities for problems when using fur.😅
@frostartsstudios

@@sewmicah I typically work with longer pile fur so I wasn't sure about the shorter fur names but ye I've been following you for a little while, I actually got the pink moth men (mine is doing great and is coming on lots of adventures!) Yeah when working with tiny pieces fur can definitely be finicky
@sewmicah
@sewmicah Год назад
It’s all cool! I usually steer clear of longer fur since it doesn’t feel as nice sensory wise on my type of plushies besides just little detail bits here and there. I’m so glad to get an update on one of the little mothmen plushies!!! That’s my favorite thing to hear back from people who’ve adopted plushies from me! 💛

pro tip from a fellow plush maker and ex-fursuit maker! use an xacto knife and cut the backing of the fur instead of using scissors, it will make the fur clean up way easier and it wont shed NEARLY as much
@sewmicah
@sewmicah 6 месяцев назад
I actually developed my own technique for cutting fur after making this video earlier this year!😅 My other fur based projects have gone much smoother since! Essentially I just fold the fabric the other way and use a combination of a rotary cutter and scissors to get the cuts I want!😁

If you use sulky solvy water soluble stabilizer on top of the fur when embroidering, the eyes dont sink in!
@sewmicah
@sewmicah Год назад
Unfortunately since this fur is so thick I’m not sure that’s work.😅 It’s always worth a try at some point but, knowing this fabric, I don’t think it’ll make much of a difference.😅 (thank you for the tip though!!!)

@sewmicah
@sewmicah 6 месяцев назад
Designing your own unique character for budsies? Awesome! I actually did this when I was a kid too!😅 Unfortunately it just couldn’t beat making something myself! I always put SO many details in my character designs, then and now, that they just couldn’t do well with budsies back then. Not to mention the construction of the plush was very flat and not huggable. Maybe they’re better now though! Mine WAS quite a few years ago! And it’s still a great way to get a custom plush if you don’t mind any type of construction of the plush! (I’ve always been kinda a plushie snob where plushies really need to hit certain factors for them to feel right. It’s probably a sensory thing tbh!😅)

OH MY GOSH I DIDNT KNOW STRING WAS DANGEROUS TO CATS!!! I’ll have to be WAY more careful in the future. Fortunately my cat is not usually interested in eating things that are not food but still. Safety first! Thank you SO SO much for the warning!

You are SO welcome!!! It was really scary with my cat when that all went down so I’m SO glad I could help spread the word about that! I’m assuming something like a thick (non-stringy) yarn would be fine for them to play around with, but thread is DEFINITELY no good! When it comes to our little fur babies, it is safety first indeed! Hopefully all those lil’ cuties out there stay safe and sound after their humans watch this!😅

You can draw an arrow on the back to tell you which way the fur direction goes
@sewmicah
@sewmicah 7 месяцев назад
Unfortunately I’ve had MANY a bad experience with drawing on fabric in the past so I probably won’t be doing that😅 But this could be a super helpful suggestion to someone else! I’m pretty good at paying attention to which way the fur goes at this point and any mishaps with fur direction would most likely be freak accidents 😂

This may seem like a dumb/random question; Do you know how to make a plush pattern using a photo? Because I haven’t done a project like this in 14 years (when I was 15) and I would love to try and make my own patterns
@sewmicah
@sewmicah 4 месяца назад
Sorry, I’m not quite sure what you mean? If you meant making a plush pattern based on a sketch I’ve done, then yes! That’s how I make all my patterns! Unfortunately it’s less about making it FROM a drawing and more about knowing pattern making and designing the drawing to represent your pattern. If you meant copying a pattern from a photo of a plushie, I’m 100% sure I could do that, but I’m also 100% sure I would never do that or teach anyone to do that. That would be stealing someone else’s design and hard work and that’s something I am firmly against.😅 Hopefully you meant the first one! The best advice I can give for that is to study plushies you have a like to get an idea of how certain shapes are formed. This is NOT to copy the pattern but as a study exercise. In addition to that, just learning some patterning basics online! I’ve never used any online resources besides a single RU-vid video on what a dart was lol! But I’m sure a simple google search could get you started on what you need! Lastly, I’d say making sure you can get what design is in your head accurately down onto paper or into a 3D modeling program. It’s important to understand the 3D shape of the plush you want to make before you make it otherwise you may end up with a jumble of fabric or a paper doll type plushie! So working on your drawing or sculpting skills will help tremendously with pattern making! It’ll take time and effort, that’s for sure! Lots of prototypes and things not turning out the way you want them to, but eventually you’ll be able to make just about anything you can draw/sculpt! All that said, I wish you luck in your plushie making journey!💛

Question why do you mostly make the plushy eyes closed
@sewmicah
@sewmicah 10 месяцев назад
Because it’s cute! When a character would look better with different eyes I will do that (like spider Gwen, vanny, and my next two upcoming plushies) but closed eyes are WAY cuter in my opinion!😅

how do you design the patterns?
@sewmicah
@sewmicah 9 месяцев назад
That’s kiiinda a hard question to answer, especially in text lol! I tried my best to answer it in my clicker plushie breakdown though! I’d give that a watch as it’s easier than trying to explain in the comments.😅 I think I’d try to explain things a little differently now, but that still gives the gist of why it’s so hard to answer lol!

What kind of fur do you use?
@sewmicah
@sewmicah 11 месяцев назад
Hey there! This project used Shanon fabric luxe cuddle seal for the fur! But remember! Patterns are typically fabric specific so make sure your patterns work with that fabric’s stretch or that you make your own patterns to fit that fabric! That fur is EXPENSIVE and definitely not something you’d want to waste!

@@sewmicah thx! Can you put the names? I wanna try to make a plush of my oc! Please and thank you!
@sewmicah
@sewmicah 5 месяцев назад
Names of the fabric? Or the shops? The shops may be too many to name seeing as it’s pretty much any shop that’ll sell the fabric I need!😂 Either way, it’s good to remember that it’s the artist who makes the plush, not the fabric! Just about any fabric can be used to make a plushie and it doesn’t have to be the same kind I use! I refined my fabric preference over about 4.5 years of sewing experience and all my patterns are made to work specifically with this fabric (Which is on the expensive side of things in my opinion). So I guess that’s three good things to remember lol! 1. The artist makes the plush, not the fabric! 2. Patterns are fabric specific! (Using the wrong fabric for a pattern will end up with it looking really off! Which may seem to contradict point 1, but all it really means is that you can use any fabric to make a plushie but you have to make sure your pattern can use or is made to use that fabric!) and 3.The fabric I use is NOT cheap! It’s really best to start out with something cheaper for refining your patterns and then use the nice fabric after the fact! As for what fabric I use, I use a bunch of different types, but the main two and the two you’ll see in this video are Shanon fabric minky no.3 and Shanon fabric luxe cuddle seal. BUT I would NOT suggest even buying these until you’re 100% sure your pattern is perfected. (Or that your pre-bought pattern will even work with these fabrics and their stretch!) That is, unless you’ve got money growing on trees where you’re at!😂 I suggest using anti-pill fleece to test your patterns if you’re absolutely set on using the fabric I use for your project. It’s FAR cheaper (especially since you can get it at pretty much any fabric store and places like joannes always has it on sale!) and has a very similar stretch to the fabrics I use so you can work on your patterns without spending TOO much money on plushies that are just prototypes. (Just remember the fur will have a bit more of a wider stretch than the minky or fleece!) Now I personally wouldn’t use that fabric for the final plushie mainly because of how it ages. It can look REALLY ratty after a while unless you’re keeping it set pristinely on a shelf. But it’s up to you! If that fabric better fits your budget then you may end up wanting to use that for the final plushie too! All in all, refining your fabric preference is a LONG process. I didn’t start out using the fabrics I do now and I may not use these forever if something better for me and my work comes up! Making plushies is an art form and every artist is different! Not every painter uses the same brand of paint, not every photographer uses the exact same camera! They all find exactly what works for them and keep evolving even after that! Sure, any artist can say what they use, but I think, even though this was ridiculously long, it’s important to remind each other of these things so we don’t get bogged down trying to replicate or BE another artist instead of finding our own special way of doing things! Sure, you may ignore everything I said, try the fabric and love it on day one, but I feel all this is still important to remember at the end of the day even if just to pass on to the next artist who asks about what fabric you use!😅💛 Anyway, I wish you luck on your plushie making journey! I hope you make wonderfully unique plushies all your own to love and enjoy!💛
@Poptartthatisbuttered
@Poptartthatisbuttered 5 месяцев назад
@sewmicah thx so much for the advice! I will definitely use it when making plushies, I do have another question tho, do the beans you put in the plushies change the texture? Like, can you feel the beans through the fur?
@sewmicah
@sewmicah 5 месяцев назад
No problem! And absolutely you can feel the beans! Just like when a plushie has those plastic pellets in it you can feel it! That’s just how it goes with weighted plushies! (I personally like it as an extra sensory piece to the plushies!) But every artist is different! My videos aren’t tutorials or guides or anything! Just entertainment! You can do whatever you want with your plushies! Weight them, don’t weight them, fill them up exclusively with poly pellets or beans! Who knows! It’s all up to you and what you like! I suggest testing out different stuffing methods before making your final plushie to find out what you like best! I was actually JUST doing that with a prototype the past couple days and it made me realize the pattern I was working with just wouldn’t work with the feel for the plushie I was going for! So I made a new pattern and started testing that one instead! Sometimes a pattern just won’t work with the feel you’re going for and that’s okay! You just may need to try something else! There’s honestly quite a bit of engineering involved when creating a pattern and plushie so testing is absolutely necessary 9 times out of 10!😅💛
