I made a custom tap handle for a great friend. It started with some unique pieces of walnut that were cast into TotalBoat Thickset epoxy, v-carved his name into it with a small CNC, and finally enjoyed some tasty brews with it!

I love the look of disgust as you throw the first one in the trash. Mistakes suck, but everyone needs to know you make them too! Great video. Cute cameos too.

You're so welcome! Happens to all of us, that's why I leave it in there... gotta normalize the mistake process of making. It's just part of the journey, like saw dust or sanding :D

Hiya from South Africa being following your channel for a while now. Love the bubble effect its given on this pieces as gives a whole new dimension to the final product. This is just my opinion as I like the effect. Good luck with the piece & hope your friend likes the end product.

Thanks for the kind words! It does work with the idea, was just disappointing cause it wasn’t what I was going for.

This is awesome, Caleb! I love the idea of surprising a buddy with something cool and shop made, but I also love that you include all the mistakes along the way. Those are learning opportunities for everyone! Plus, I certainly appreciate knowing that others make mistakes too. Just maybe not as many as I do... 😆

Thanks! It's always fun making something for a friend.. but also high pressure making something for another maker that knows how to critique your work! haha. And don't worry.. there were plenty of smaller mistakes that just weren't worth sharing. My vids would be way too long if I shared all of them 🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

Thank you for showing your mistakes. I’ve been woodworking for about a year or so and while I make progress on every project I still continue to make mistakes so it’s nice to see people that are experienced making mistakes as well

Awesome project and build bud! Really great tip about building up with gloss first - didn't know that!
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 3 года назад
Thanks, Ethan! It's a small thing.. but especially on show pieces with nice grain it can really make a difference. It's really obvious in oil based products - waterbased are all milky in the can. If you have a can of gloss and satin of the same thing, open both and look sometime.

Lovely job. I like the hot glue sticks technique to get the taper on the table saw. I'll have to use that.

Very cool and I love that you show you can make mistakes too. Would like to have seen them a little closer and why they were mistakes
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 3 года назад
Oh yes, making mistakes is just part of the process.. some projects have more than others though. The epoxy mistakes were pretty obvious. As far as the CNC stuff.. I'm still learning so hard to explain mistakes I barely understand. Short version of it is the machine missed steps because I was running it too aggressive. Meaning the tool came out of alignment from where it was supposed to be so part of the letters were offset from the correct position.

First of all thank you for your service and it's funny my wife's nephew retired from Fort Leonard Wood, still works for the DOD out of Fort Leonard Wood. Any way a question I live in Hernando MS and have some red wood logs that I would like to get milled into slabs. Do you know anyone that would be interested in the wood and leave some slabs for me so I can do some projects. I have no way of moving the logs myself but don't want to see if go to waste or to firewood - which would be the last resort. Thank you for your time and keep up the interesting videos.

Thanks, Robert! I actually do know a few guys that are in the MS area. Not too far from you is Steve Tidwell, and there's also Chad (Superior Artisan Wood and Slab on IG). I know Chad has a crane and that he does sell on consignment for folks. Shoot me an email if you need contact info.

Caleb why didn't you put it in the pressure chamber that you had behind you when taking the first one apart 🤔? Definitely would have done the trick getting rid of the pain known as epoxy bubbles!!!. 💯% 👍🇬🇧
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 3 года назад
Good eye! That's a vacuum chamber, not a pressure pot. I used it to pull bubbles out of the epoxy so it would be clear faster. It might've been worth a try.. but it wouldn't have fit in it.
@simonr6793

@@YouCanMakeThisToo hahaha you know I thought it's a vacuum chamber then still typed pressure chamber, i think I need to stop watching video's at silly o'clock early hours of the morning and get some sleep 💤. I've been looking at these for a while now but not sure what size is best as they seem to do a few different sizes now!
