I really like this style setup. I saw your buddy Shawn (Corporals Corner) do a similar configuration with a slightly different stakeout. Good stuff man, thanks for sharing.
Really like this. I usually go with a basic A-frame with my 10x10, but this is great if you need a freestanding. Also looks like it would protect you from rain and wind a lot better.
Great idea on using the tarp to make a ⛺ I've seen other survivalist utilizing this method. Mr Shawn Kelly uses these tarp tying methods, excellent job sir. Enjoy the page.
Awesome informative video Dan!!! I want to make an oil cloth tarp . I have watched your videos when you made one of yours . Thank you for posting Dan. Take care and stay safe my friend!!
Dan, you are my favorite bushcraft instructor. You know how to teach the skills using visual and physical descriptions that help me to learn. Take the Truckers knot video. I still use all your little visual and physical cues to this day. I always forgot little things in tying this knot, but when I remember back to how you taught it, it always comes back to me. Thanks.
Nice tent !!! Great job !!! The only thing it do differently is if I have some duck tape I'd cut small pieces off, pre hole it in the middle, put it on my tarp front and back (and top & bottom of your tarp) where I know the holes in the tarp will be, then stake it down. That added little duck tape (above & underneath) will help protect your tarp from ripping. Then once you know where your stick will go, mark it off, take your duck tape, make a small square say 5 inches, put a few layers of duck tape on your square, one square on the bottom, one on top, where your stick goes, (even through you'll pad it) just for added protection. Of course you don't 'have' to do that but it would make your tarp last longer in the long run. 👍😎 Want a really cool suggestion? Cut a length strip of duck tap, put say four layers on top of each other, the top and bottom layer have the sticky part covered up. When you go to bed, you put that strip down at the entrence, then smear some Vicks Rub on it and mosquitos hate the smell of vicks and they'll be alot less likely to come into your tent and bite.😁
I watched the video to get a trick for not ripping the plastic that I'm going to use. Not going to make a tent, but a shelter for my bag and clothes when I'm working in a plot of land.
Tarps are one of my must carry items anywhere, I even have one in my vehicle kit in case of emergencies. They're just so useful and versatile . I don't have an oilcloth tarp (yet), but this configuration works fine with an Aqua tarp or a lightweight one. If you're tent/hammock/stealth camping they're great to have.
I've done something like this before, but used the plate from a mess kit on top of the stick. Also ended up placing rocks and logs around the bottom to help keep the wind from blowing through. Had a second smaller tarp for a door. Thanks for the vid, Man.
I've been wondering about the door. Quite nice during heavy rain. Especially when the wind changes direction. I have a very light weight poncho that works ok. ... but something made to fit and packed with the tarp seems like a good idea.
@@cautious1343 You can close the front by bringing those 2 "Wings" together at the front, so the opening gets a lot smaller. The rest you can close by putting your backpack with the rain cover attatched from the inside into the opening.
@@johnygoodman6659 Trust me, I know. Big purchases like that usually take me a while to validate to myself. I had been sitting on buying that thing for about 6 months before I pulled the trigger. Now that I have it though, the high quality tarp made it worth it in the end.
My go to shelter. I also carry a plastic sheet to lay as a floor. There's another tarp config that sleeps 2 that has a floor in it but plastic sheets come in handy in so many ways
I like your setup better than some others which give a little less room in which they take the one loop from the corner from each side in the back and the fold those corners under .
Tried this shelter after watching this video, had a big storm blow in, with the back of the shelter facing into the wind it held up great in really strong gusting wind 👍
This is my favorite tarp/tent setup. Sets up in minutes. Just need some flat ground and 7 stakes. I wonder why the contestants in Alone season 9 didn't use this configuration when bad weather was moving in on them when they first arrived.
Thanks, Dan! That's awesome. Must ask you:. Unless I custom make this 10x10 tarp .. where can I buy one just like yours (complete with loops for staking it down)? Thanks.
Thanks I’m just getting into tarping. Can you show one were you have a closure on the front as week for bad weather? Or will i find on if I search your other videos?
Bloody good tarp design 👍👍😁 There is a little 1mtr x 1mtr tarp on the market [I think it’s called the magic carpet] that is perfect for fitting at the front so you can add it to this design as a door.

If you move your rear most pegs to the next tab in,you can fold the loose bit in under the back and use it as a ground sheet,,also you can buy bits to make an A frame,or tie 2 bits together, or use a telescopic hiking pole,
A tarp pitch can be the best 4 season shelter. It has to go tight to the ground on all sides and have a wood stove inside if it is going to be any good I a winter blizzard. The whole outfit cannot weigh more than 4 lbs. if backpackers are going to use it. A 10’x10’ tarp only needs to be pegged on the 4 corners with as many pegs as it takes to be secure in any wind. No grommets are needed. It has space for 2 cooking or 4 sleeping. The chimney can serve as a corner pole. All sides can be raised forming an umbrella to cool off, heat from the stove or summer sun.
Have you seen the awsome little red radio in the ads on You Tube? I got one and it's fantastic ! It's small, light weight and works great. I'd of luved to have gotten the other gear they also sell but I had to keep pushing the no button till the end where you finnely get to order the radio. Just pay for shipping. (I'll get more from that company at a latter date) But for now the radio has two lights, it has WB (weather info) AM & FM, has a small solar pannle, takes 3 AAA batterys & you can wind it up to use the LL-ion battery & has a small strap. It isn't waterpoof but water resistant. I just thought I'd share that info cause you share so much with us.
Do you have any shelter designs that include ground cover? Where I am there's loads of biting insects and other reasons to make sure your ground is covered.
