Make a Walnut and Agba Box // Finger Joints Jig

I've always wanted to make a more traditional woodworking project using finger joints and finally found the time to do it.
This was my first time using american walnut - that is really hard to find here in Portugal (our walnut trees are not the same species or color) - and that block came all the way from the United States a bunch of months ago.
I hope you enjoy this video as well as the final object. I wanted to try something different from usual and ended up raising the top panel as well as creating a floating look on the lid. Is almost seems like there are two boxes, one on the top of the other.

Nothing more impressive than seeing a young person working with wood using hand tools. Great job, thank you for sharing..

Box turned out really nice, the gap between lid and bottom plus the raised panel lid gave it a nice little bit of character. Also, I'm sure you know this already but if not and for those that don't. After cutting the box to make a bottom and lid, get 4 sheets of sand paper or more if needed and a nice flat surface, use some none permanent spray glue and stick the sheets to it and use that as a base to sand the cuts flat again.

When I watch your videos, I always ask myself what I like the most: what you build, or the way you shoot it! You are one of the very few that could simply glue two pieces of wood together and make a nice video of it!

I really like the gap you left between the lid and the box, and how it looks with the panel on top. Love your sense of style.

Another great video. Loved the idea of spacing the lid up to show off the gap. A tip for you with the thicknesser. I use a sheet of melamine with a lip screwed to it, slide it into the bed of the thicknesser and then just feed my thin strips over that. Works really well, even down to about 2.5 mm. Saves all that mucking around with the double sided tape.

Nicely done Christina. When using the hand plane to make larger panels, try putting both both boards in the clamp at the same time with the edges next to each other. In this way you can plane the jointing edges at the same time. Even if it is not perfectly square, they will offset one another.

Hello Christiana. I just wanted to tell you that your videos touch me a lot. first of all because they are very well made and very creative but also for the very beautiful images of Porto, city that I like very much and that I find beautiful. I am of Portuguese origin and my father is born in Porto Rua de São Roque da Lameira in a small house that still exists. Congratulations for your channel. Arnault.

Love your channel and always look forward to your videos. You have some lovely equipment and know how to use it. Speaking from 40+ years in the trade I remember safety videos when I was training about long sleeves and loose clothing when using machinery. 08:20 Think safety first constantly, especially if working alone. Great box, love it!

The smell of Walnut comes from a naturally produced oil called Junglone. Junglone can be found through out the tree, from it's leaves, bark, and branches, to it's roots. The oil is a natural weed suppressant which is particularly effective against members of the Nightshade family (Solanaceae family) like tomatoes, potatoes, and tobacco.

Great job! If you are trying to handplane edges for edge joining, you can put the two pieces together so the joining edge is together. Then plane that. That way if it isn't perfectly 90 degrees it is still complementary and will make a nice seem. Hopefully that makes sense. Keep it up

Fine details become magnified. Attention to finer points becomes even more important. This passes with flying colors.

Nice to see you enjoy hand tools, and as you wrote, same name of wood is always different all around the world, also in one country changes a lot. I always love the back images of your shop, Portugal seems to be so nice :) and the sun in your footage is magic. The lid joint it's so special, for me is the best part. Another way to make nice fitting lids, is to route two offset grooves, half the depth of the material, one on the inside and one on the outside, separated by just less than the width of your table saw blade. After you have glued up, you run the box around the table saw (like you already did) but now you have a nice lip.

Really nice! I've been following for a while now and I like how you don't have the extended shop like Jay Bates and others and are still able to do what you want. I did close my eyes in terror when you were leaning a bit over your running table saw with your loose shirt. All it took was a gust of wind... I'm coming to Porto in less than two months for a couple of days, I'll come for an autograph if I spot you 😉
