Hint for the cloak. Put quarter sized stones all along the bottom. Keeps the cloak from blowing up in windy conditions AND can help turn it into a flexible club if you need to fight off robbers.

Couple of sewing tips. Trim your seams. Open the seams flat out and press them then fold the seam back and press them again. Gives a much neater finish. On thicker areas where there are maybe four layers of fabric, trim each layer of fabric at a graduated angle so it lies flatter. On curved areas, clip into the seam but stop about 1/8th of an inch from the stitching. That way the curve will be smooth and not look like a series of jagged lines. It also lets the fabric "give" which is more comfortable when wearing. I've made several cloaks in the past, all lined, all with hoods.

@@catsmeow5566You're welcome. These tips can be applied to any item you are making. Can turn a garment from looking home-made to looking professional. I made my wedding outfit myself - a fully lined ankle length dress and fully lined jacket (I was in my late 40s when I remarried). I ironed every seam flat by gently stretching the seam as I passed the iron over it. The result was a professional looking outfit. I had gone to our local wedding shop but they had nothing in my size (I'm very short and slim), wanted to sell me a dress that would have been suited to a younger lady walking down the aisle (we got married in the Registry Office) and I would have looked like a fairy on a Christmas tree 🙄 The cost of that ran into hundreds of UK pounds. So, I went to our fabric shop, found the exact fabric I wanted, a satin type in an Oyster shade, bought the fabric, lining, pattern and all the notions and had change out of £30 ($38). Made the outfit within a week. Exactly what I wanted and it was a perfect fit. I'm a widow now but if I met someone (in my late 60s so doubtful) I'd have no hesitation in making an outfit again.

@@catsmeow5566I have no intention of getting married again. I prefer curling up with my cats and a good book - less hassle 🤣 I am about to start making a pair of palazzo pants as I like floaty skirts/trousers for summer as when you walk they cool you down. I hope we get a good summer this year as last year, despite what the climate change brigade were saying, we had a lot of rain and temperatures were well below average except for a few days. I wore jeans and sweatshirts most days. I have a convertible car and was only able to take the roof down twice. On the plus side my Conference Pear Tree had a bumper crop which kept me busy in the kitchen making pear jam and other pear recipes.

@@Pythonaria ah. I have no intention of ever getting married. I also love curling up with my cats. Got 12 of them currently. Summer last year in my area was absolutely miserable. Waay too hot and my AC died. I don't do well with heat so I'm hoping it won't get that hot this year. Hoping temps will stay under 100. They got up to 110 last year with heat index over 120. Palazzo pants seem cool. I have a sand pear tree but it hasn't had fruit in almost a decade.

If you attach the knife holder to the lining prior to sewing the outer cloak to it, then the pocket attachment won’t show from the outside. Just be sure to place the holder on the side you face the lining towards the outer fabric before sewing (between the two layers), so that when you flip it inside out for the hidden seams, the holder will now be on the out side

Hints for working with leather. You shouldn't use hot water on leather. You also shouldn't put it in the oven. You're drying out the leather. Just wet it with room temp water. Shape with a bone folder or put in a mold. Also you should have a welt. That will keep the knives from cutting the stitching.
@cbjewelz

Oven hardening is perfectly fine - it's a well known technique for hardening and you can oil/finish/condition the leather after. Agree that hot water is not necessary

When you go to sew the bottom of the cloak to close it, you can do most of it on the sewing maching inside out, leave enough space to turn the cloqk right side out, and continue to close the rest of it with the blind stitch, instead of doing it all by hand. Because I have seen you follow the primal rule of sewing (90% of your work should be done at the ironing board), that last step to close up the cloak will leave you with a pristine edge to your seams. Also, if youre not using a serger, iron your seams open so they lay flat. I remember making my first lined cloak with my mom when I was 12, and I still use it (I'm not very tall 😅). You're certainly making the project look a lot easier for the beginning sewer than what I remember (my mom is a darter and pleater 😂😂).

Thank you for this! I'm trying to do an OC Jedi costume but I'm going with the surcoat style with attached hood and wanted to see how to do the hood. I think I might want a detachable cape that folds behind the shoulders rather than hanging in front, but I'll have to play around with some discount curtains I got and see how that looks. The ladder stitch is very useful-- especially since I haven't used a sewing machine since 1991 and I do all my sewing by hand. If you are worried about the pins moving, you can also do a basting stitch beforehand to hold things together. Your toggle clasp is very cool. I think I want to go with lighter/thinner fabric to get the hood to drape a bit more. Would an air fryer work instead of an oven? I have a toaster oven-looking air fryer and do not have a working regular oven. I think I'd want to carry my medieval style flatware set- 2 pronged fork, a spoon, a knife, & a food pick all with twisted metal handles inside a leather roll.

The materials were pretty cheap and, even with all the filming and mt terrible sewing skills, it only took a few hours to do. Give it a shot😁

Use a smooth piece of plastic or antler to form the leather after wetting.
