Make an Industrial Drawer Cabinet - Forme Industrious

Industrial Styled workshop Drawers/ Lathe Cabinet. Made from 75 x 75 mm Steel for the 4 legs, 50 x 50 for the rest of the box structure. I have a heap of 19mm reclaimed plywood so I used that for the top, sides and drawer cases. The Drawer front is reclaimed Pine shelving. I made the drawer bases from old metal signage as I have so many sheets I have to use it some how, rather than buy more ply. (Ply, would be my first preference however). As the Ply was all painted with an industrial finish (Grey) I paint stripped and sanded the paint off, then stained in Walnut. Clear Wipe on Poly and Bee's Wax is used to finish. I made the Drawer runners also to cut down on costs though I would much prefer to use the sliding drawers runners. If this was being built for a customer I would use the roller bearing sliders for the drawers. The Drawer Handles are made from ReBar and Angle. No welding. I machined a slight shoulder on the Rebar ends so once installed that cannot slide out. I love it..........I love it. Oh, it is heavy as all hell too.

It looks fantastic. I'm curious why you didn't strip the steel while it was in pieces. Were you afraid it would rust before you assembled and protected it?
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious 6 лет назад
Thank you, yes rust was a consideration, and I'm impatient and wanted to get into the build. I used the stripper, then scraped off the paint but the residual was a pain so I used the wire wheel. That worked but took forever. In the end I used acrylic thinner and the residual paint just wiped off. I know better next time. thanks!

Hey Scott..... Been trawling through your catalogue of videos.... As I have for a few years, on and off.... Always dig your projects.... But one thing that I must have missed, is your preferred metal finish technique..... What is the process you use? I love the rawness of it, but it has a little of a black oxide feel..... Are you just oiling the surface and then a microfibre buff? Fess up! I really would like to know! Cheers.
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious 5 лет назад
Ok, time to fess up. This cabinet was paint stripped to bare metal leaving the mill finish (Blackish blue). If I used a grinder it would go to the silver raw look which was not what I was after. On this one I just put a clear acrylic on it and it's fine. Two pack clear would be harder and better though. New projects from here out I will use Penetrol. I have used wax on raw steel too. That needs to be reapplied. Some projects I like the black look with the raw ground silver with a clear over the top. Looks kind of vintage then. Thanks for the comment!!

Really awesome! I just found your channel! I'm super impressed with how you stripped the paint off the plywood then sanded without burning through any of the plys. Question, how do the rebar handles stay in the brackets? Do they tend to slide side to side or did you somehow peen them over so they wouldn't fit through the holes once installed?
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious 6 лет назад
Hi William, glad you found me. I have about 23 full sized 3/4 Ply sheets all industrial painted. I got those from a business closing down so I've had plenty practice sanding those darn critters :) The handles rebar I machined a slight shoulder at both ends, basically knocking off the raised portions. They are undersized very slightly to the hole so once installed cannot slide out. Sorry I didn't video that part. All the best and thank you for the feedback! That is a spectacular lathe bench, awesome job dude! Was it made "on the fly", or did you follow plans? I've just taken up stick welding to broaden my skills as I'm always looking to make something or other. As it happens I'm in need of a better bench for my 1940s Grayson lathe and they way you knocked your bench together looks very straightforward so it's inspired me to have a crack at it myself, though I'll probably change the storage arrangement to suit the tooling and sundries I have for the lathe. Thank you very much for sharing, I'll check out the rest of your vids now and already subbed for more ;)
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious 6 лет назад
Huge thanks for the sub, and comment! I don't go off a plan, but I do a rough sketch and go from there. The build really is pretty straight forward. It's easier than joinery, because with steel you can just do but joints, weld it and the joint is done and strong. I hope you enjoy your build, and all the best!

Thankyou. I didn't film it but I slightly reduced the diameter of the Re-Bar at the ends using the lathe. Can do the same with a Grinder. The raised portions stop the bar from sliding out.

gotcha . simple , simple . I would have pinned and wasted time and energy . sometimes I build something and get stumped so I leave it. returning after a night of sleep the answer comes so quickly. I do not have a lathe , would love to have one , but yes a grinder good second. if you can site your make and model lathe. going to subscribe either way. been watching a few others . all excellent. loved it.

I could just stare at that for hours. It is absolutely gorgeous and masculine all at the same time. I wish I had the time and resources to make one. I have the fab skill but not the money for material or the tools required. They would frown if I used our welders and saws at work hahaha! Great video. Amazing bench.

Scott Turner that would be a dream come true. Always wanted a wood shop and a fab shop. A wife, three daughters and a railroad salary keeps that far out of the budget hahaha! I’ll be keeping an eye on your channel. What I was most impressed with was the design by the way. It takes a lot of vision and detailed plans to make that go off without a hitch.

Keep at it Luke. I was just the same for years. Pick up second hand tools along the way.

Beautiful work! When you have a bench lathe and a small shop, under tool storage is the way to go. It's so much wasted volume and lathe tools are small. They fit really nice in small drawers. If I get another bench lathe, I may imitate this. My Logan 10" is sitting over a couple Lyons small bin cabinets the same way. It makes the lathe really tidy and self-contained.

Thank you! My lathe tools only take 3 drawers so for the rest I can contain lots of other tools, neat and tidy. It's working out great, well worth the effort!
