Make an Inexpensive Sharpening System/Appliance

Sharpening a little often is better than sharpening a lot infrequently. But the key to sharpening often is making it convenient. We build a simple sharpening system that is efficient, effective and convenient. One that can be built for next to nothing and be kept at the bench.

I am recovering from foot surgery and have found your channel. Watching your video on chisel sharpening after watching other content on the same subject is so down to earth and affordable compared to others. some systems advocated by others run into the 500 to 1000 dollar range and requires other purchases beyond stone it is cheaper to have them sharpened by a service. Your approach to it makes more dollars and cents (get it?) to me and is affordable as well as compact. You have, by far, become my favorite woodworking coach because your approach appeals to the hobbyists who dont have a lot of money to sink into various gadgets. Keep producing cost saving and beneficial content. I also love your continuation of teaching technique. As a prior middle school teacher I love the time and effort you put into the "why's and wherefore's" you include. Not only do I learn new techniques but other general knowledge content you share. I always feel smarter and more energized after watching your content. Truly what youtube is meant to be!

As a hobby wood worker, i found the video very informative and covered several important areas. I think the thing the "violin makers" and other purists miss is that this is an introduction to sharpening. One will evolve, if motivated from jigs and sandpaper to freehand and stones blessed by the Dali Lama. I enjoyed your video, it was not too long and I saw several things I believe I could use in my shop. Subscribed!

I thought about mentioning that. Schwarz and a lot of others recommend the same thing. I did it on a couple of them (I've got a dozen, one for each bench in the school). For the chisels we used here (Narex, imperial, classic) the side bolsters are very even. Didn't seem to make much of a difference. It did on ones where the side bolsters taper but still worked fine without. I decided not to muddle the issue too much and leave it out.

Nice build. I'm still a fan of the Scary Sharp system, but this is very cool, and I can see the benefit of the all in one design. I built a base out of UHMW with a frame that holds my float glass plates with the wet sand paper on them, and just switch them out. I'm one of those sick and twisted individuals that actually enjoys sharpening. Late evenings when everyone else has turned in and I don't want to run any machines, I put the headphones on and touch up chisel and plane irons. Almost kind of a Zen exercise.

I don't believe I've picked up nearly as many good, practical and stupid simple techniques from any other video on sharpening! I made my own jig using a couple bearings, threaded rod and a couple pieces of scrap wood with a slot cut out of the inside of each piece to hold the blade just like the jig you used. Which works great.....except the consistency factor trying to guess exactly where to place the blade in the jig. Your solution was such a stupid simple design that I'm in process of copying your sharpening system!! Thanks for all the great and easy to follow content!! Keep em coming!!!

WORTHEWATCHING. This video is long, but great. In another of the Wortheffort videos, someone gave a number of suggestions on how to do instructional lectures better, and while quite a bit of it was true, and some of his presentation is put me off a little, the information presented here is well worth focusing on. Well worth it. I had been thinking about buying some of those expensive diamond stones when I saw this. It so happens that where I live, there's a window manufacture that's only a couple of miles from me, where the Big Box DIY store is about ten. So I got a 12 X 18 X 3/8 inch piece of left over float glass for cheap. Built a bed for it from 3/4 inch particle boards glued together to make a 1-1/2 inch thick piece. I tried wet-or-dry paper, and that sharpened, but only lasted for two chisels. The paper still came apart from the water and so I got sand paper on mylar film from Lee Valley Tools. Those sheets are pricey, but I have looked around and haven't found the mylar backed sandpaper anywhere else, yet. They're still about a tenth to a twentieth the price of a diamond stone, so I can't complain even if I have to replace them now and then. But not too often, I hope. The cheap sharpening jig to hold the chisel turned out to be too cheap. It won't hold certain types of chisels with vertical, or partly vertical, sides. Now I must decide which to replace, the chisel or the jig.

Thanks for the tips. I don't have any stones for my chisels. At work we made our own cutters to use for paint finessing. These cutters had to be perfectly flat and very sharp. We used glass, 2000g wet/dry sand paper & finessing compound to hone them to a mirror finish. The finessing compound was about 4000g. We used these cutters to cut dirt/fm, scrape runs & flatten light craters out of paint on our car bodies. So I figured if it was good enough to sharpen finessing cutters for paint on a new a new car body, it was good enough for a wood chisel.

Really loving your detailed and insightful instructionals. FYI, regarding glass vs the granite tile, I thought your point about granite being easier to find well taken, but I got my chunk of thick, tempered glass from an old bathroom scale, so scavenging can be useful, too (if less reliable than the Big Box store...).

I've gone through your video four times and other than course and fine I have no Idea what grits you use. This approach will be great for woodworking classes I teach in Uganda (their tools and resources are very limited) and I can take this to them with sandpaper supplies but knowing the grits will be very helpful. Ben
@wortheffort
@wortheffort 7 лет назад
Course and fine is really all you need for most work. You'll likely have different ratings there for grits. They seem pretty fluid country to country.
@MegaLostOne
@MegaLostOne 7 лет назад
Since you recommended it and looking at the link on Lee Valley, what grit did you use? 15 micron and 5 micron (these are the only ones currently listed as PSA) or 15 micron and 0.5 micron/5 micron and 0.5 micron. Course is subjective and to those of us who have not previously honed a Iron or chisel specifics would be appreciated. Also I would like to say thank you for your advice for the beginner.

i love the idea of inserting the tile in the board and this actually helps me out a lot because I make statues from 1/4 plexiglass and i have a lot of marble for bases (I buy the broken pieces from the big box store on the cheap and re-cut them to size). I was originally going to use some some tempered glass shelves to do this but when i put a straight edge to one I realized they have a slight bulge on the edge and since they are 36" long they are an inconvenient size.

As for chiselling the angle gauge in the wood next to the granite tile (at 21:50) I think it would be better if you chiseled before setting the tile with epoxy. That way if you screw up the wood you can just chuck it and make a new wooden block. You said it yourself that there is a very real possibility that you could bung up the entire thing. Just my 2cents

Great video thanks , I use water stones myself I have tried storing all my stones and a water container in a large plastic container with a lid, I made a shelf in the box to sharpen on and have a small hand towel , I still can not control the mess I make I hate it , water stones sharpen great but I can't stand the time wasted waiting for the stones to soak and the time it takes to clean up after washing the stones and wiping down my bench. It seems sharping with water stones is something you plan to do and not something you do quickly when your blade goes blunt. Id like to go down the Diamond plate road but as you said they are very expensive , anyway your solution is a great idea i am going to give it a go thanks again.

This is a video worth watching over again. The information that is condensed into a half hour video is packed with information everyone should review once a year. His videos are usually pretty informative and relevant. Personally, I can not afford the diamond plates, so, for now, I will stay with the stones. Is there a way to tell if you should use oil or water with them?

supposed to use lapping fluid , by trend. diamond abrasive lapping fluid. no rust & diamond cut better than using water or oil due to thickness of both to thickness of diamonds on plate. less contact with diamonds. it works after months tests 3 differet ways
