Rip three or four 1/4 thick strips. glue the strips and then clamp down the ends and use a screw at the middle to create a 1/16 concave. The disadvantage of caul made of wood is that PVA glue will adhere. This is why a metal caul is preferable.
Just a thought, Rather than tapering the wood on either side of the center. Wouldn't a simple small 1/2 inch length of 1/32 thick plastic shim double side tape adhesively fixed to the center of the Caul effectively do exactly the same job?
Funny, how a simple thing can be made complicated with machines. Just use a regular #4 or #5 hand plane, planing the full length of your cauls. This will automatically create the desired bow shape. Don't believe me - try it for yourself.
Paul Sellars would have this done in about 1 to 2 minutes with a No 4 soothing plane, if it takes him that long. . And the hand plane has at least a million other uses in the shop. Nicely done video, but overly complicated.
Yeah, I just don’t see being able to get the arc on the jointer. Would think that if anything, setting the exact center of the caul on the edge of the outfeed table for both cuts, you’d end up with a small uncut section right in the center. Couldn’t see it in the video, but the center should not have passed over the cutter either way, thus leaving an uncut portion. Even if it was uncentered, then you would cut the middle and basically just trued up the board. At least that’s what I’m thinking.
I have the DeWalt job site table saw, which has a small fence. Can I just clamp a long sacrificial fence to the existing in order to get me the distance I need to start the cut if I am trying to make 30" cauls?
Good idea, but I don't think that hand planes are so difficult to master. It would be great to show how quick it can be done with a hand plane, people would give it a try.
