I made my first coin ring and it turned out great, the only problem is that I used a 1/2 in. punch and it was skinny but nice, so if I want to make a wider band what punch should I use. Also I have the same Rappan coin I got it in some change at a store, I just through it in a box with all the other so called junk coins, who would of thought I would be doing this at 66 yrs. of age and a woman, just goes to show you that its never too late to learn new things. I just bought a vice and a 1 ton Arbour press, here in Canada, I could not find a 6 ton. I think this is ok. An old lady going to the counter with these lol.You inspired me Fencekid and that's a good thing, Thank You.

very nice, I was thinking about how to do this without marring the inside.....I have a old collection of .72 silver mexican coins that I tried a couple on after doing several regular quarters...man did I jack them up....the first one ended up at what i would guess is like a size 20.....one of them I melted the detail off of getting it to hot, and one cracked real good....funny because all the quarters I did came out nearly perfect, but when I got on the silver I messed it up real bad....you've inspired me to keep it up though.

Hey fencekid, thanks for the video! I started to make my first coin ring but i lost all details, my ring is totally plane at the inside and outside. To start getting it inside out i used my metal doming block, to get the proper ring size i used a steel mandrel and a plastic hammer and i annealed it several times. After watching your video i will use leather around my mandrel, but did you have any idea why i lost all details at the outside of my ring? I used a quarter without silver content. The ring in the picture is what i have made, i am not happy with the result.
@ultimatefacepainting

Oh Yeah 1 more thing....How do you get your pics to look so good and the close up is great, what do you use to get a great pic to show off your coins. I can barely see the B on the Rappan coin and that's under a lighted magnifier. I hope you see this.

How do you decide what size hole to punch through the centre to achieve the size ring you want
@opagrobbebol9863
@opagrobbebol9863 9 лет назад
Good stuff, I now use a transparent PVC and is also working well. Just one thing I can't get consistent is the polishing silver coin rings. Maybe it is the annealing temperature ?? or the inconsistency of the older type coins, I.e a columbian half dollar 1893. One is shiny and one just doesn't want to shine. Your comment/advise appreciated. Cheers and regards from New Zealand
@fencekid

Opa Grobbebol You're over heating your ring during annealing. For silver, try the Sharpie method and heat slowly.

Another great tip-- use a mandrel for stretching the coin/ring that has no line or ridges in it, you can get them on ebay for about $12 bucks. Those sizing lines on the mandrel are what makes most of those ugly marks. Also another tip---If you find that the PVC pipe don't go down the mandrel as far as you need it to, you can take a hack saw and cut it lengthwise, from the end about 4 inches or so, then make another cut lengthwise 90 degrees to the first cut, there should be 4 slices down the pipe from the end when you are done about 4 inches long. Then wrap rubber bands around the end of the pvc pipe so it will stay tight to the mandrel and not slip over the coin while tapping down on it. The pvc pipe will spread further than the normal size so you can tap it down further on the mandrel This is hard to explain to some people without a drawing or showing how to do it but it's the best I can do for now.

I have the Punch & Die set from Harbor Freight. I have the mandrel, and the Liver of Sulfur came yesterday. The sanding block I have is 220 grit. That's the finest I could find at the local Home Depot. Got steel wool, 000 fine grit. I still need the Doming Block. Just saw that video. Anyway, I've punched 3 of these out now. The second one split on the bottom. The third one came out the flattest although a little off center. Flipped it over on the mandrel at about size 7. Worked it out much better. Anyway, I do metal detecting, and luckily have saved the coins I have found over the years. I wear a size 13, so think a half would do better for me. my question is, what size punch should I be using?
@MsOguevara

You suggested using leather on the inside of the ring when pounding. How about using leather outside the ring to pound it as well? I can't help but think that will save marring the outside as well... Or does that one work? Might be too soft to pend, right?
@jayc7969
@jayc7969 10 лет назад
Hey Fencekid,I'm sure you have explained this before but I was wondering how you get the outer edges to not get all dinged up. I am wondering if it is because I am using a small hammer and not a teardrop mallet. Hopefully I have made my problem clear enough to understand so you could help. thanks and your rings are amazing.
@fencekid
@fencekid 10 лет назад
Jay C Thanx Man. I wouldn't let a steel hammer make contact with the ring at all. The teardrop is the best I have found, but hard rubber or rawhide mallet would be my next choice.

Daniel Ford I generally stick with a 7/16" punch hole for both quarters and half dollars. A 1/2" works too, I just like to use as much of the coin as I can get away with. The smaller the hole, the wider the band. good luck Brother. You'll learn more and more with each ring you make

FK: If you're looking to make a size 14 final ring size, do you simply keep stretching the ring 'till you get there? Or, should you start with a larger hole? I caught your point in this video about NOT obliterarting the inside detail but NOT stretching so much. This makes me think I should start with a slightly larger hole punch. Am I on the right track?
@fencekid
@fencekid 9 лет назад
Jim Sutton No. The punch size will dictate how wide your band will be. The larger punch hole, the thinner your band will be. Imagine a punch hole almost as large as the coin. Not much left to work with is there? With annealing, you can get clear up to a 15, but because it was stretched so much, the markings on the coin stretch too. The farther you stretch a coin, the more faded the markings will appear on your ring. An optimum ring is one that is folded over, and not stretched at all. A quarter works best between a size 4 through 9. A half dollar? Size 9 through 13. We can go farther than that, but like I said, the farther you go, the more faded your markings will appear. If someone wanted a quarter at a size 14, but still wanted the markings to be sweet, well, they can't have it both ways. Go to a 14 faded, or stay small and mint. Such a person would have to seek out a larger coin to have it both ways.

There are several swiss coins, which would be nice for creating some rings. ->en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_franc Until 1967 they used silver for the coins also be big "5Fr" coins. If you want to do a very special one, you have to buy a coin called "Goldvreneli" is a bit expensive but also rare.

What about annealing vs not? Have you found any difference in the stretching/warping of the words when doing that?

annealing is very important. all the annealing does is soften the coin so you can bend and stretch it easier. The farther you stretch a coin out, the farther the markings on it will stretch too

Thanks for the new video. Thanks to your instructions, I've made a few now. A couple quarters ans two 1964 silver halves. 64 is my birth year and the last year of 90% silver. Here's one of them - i13.photobucket.com/albums/a267/ocelotsden/IMG_02112.jpg

Dude, that's bad ass! great job. I love the Kennedys, they make great rings.That kind of quality after just a few practice runs is very commendable :) Looks like you've got the touch. Way to hustle man
