Turning this weekend into a fun event by making Concrete Rhubarb Leaves. It is simple and easy to do. You say you don't have any rhubarb, use any leaf with good veins on the back. I like to use mortar mix instead of a concrete mix just because there are no little rocks in the mix. Have some fun this weekend.

Your explanation of mortar consistency was SPOT ON - it was PERFECT! From 2 60# bags of mortar mix, I created 3 HUGE rhubarb pieces, 5 small hosta leaves, and 3 large squash stones. The rhubarb pieces I double layered with hardware cloth between the two layers. So much fun! Can't wait til they are cured and ready for sealing and painting! I have a friend that grows HUGE Hosta leaves - that could be my next project! Thank you SO much for your instructions!

Oh! Thank you for that video! I went to a garden demonstration to make these but they used peat moss mixed with concrete and they were not very sturdy. Love the tip about the mortar mix instead. I may have to give this another shot! Thanks for instruction AND inspiration!

I just love your site. You have the best ideas and are so informative. By the way, I made vanilla extract using vodka, bourbon & rum. I also made it with Madagascar, Tahitian and Mexican beans using the three liquors for each bean. Hope they turn out. It's been a month...23 months to go...

Thanks so much for taking the time to show this. I've had it on the back burner for quite some time. Question: do you include sand in your mortar mix? And what is the difference that you have found between concrete and mortar. Rhubarb leaves here I come!

Daphne, I don't add sand to the mortar mix. The concrete can sometimes give you a different texture as the rocks can block some of the vines at times.

I have been using a mortar mix for over 15 years and they have worked beautifully. I wonder if your mix was different? Did you put chicken wire or some other type of wire between layers. Also did you use a concrete sealer, paint and then sealer again?

Yes you can Vee. I have stepping stones made the same way hta have been in the ground for more then 6 years. We walk on them every day.
