This is a tutorial on how to make Vambraces out of Craft Foam. Vambraces are the forearm armor pieces that knights wore. They are also sometimes called the lower cannon. Craft foam is an amazing product that you can heat up and shape into any shape you want.
There is more information and the template for this project on my website here:

Don't forget if you're trying this at home, test if the temperature of your hot glue gun is suitable for the foam because if it's too hot, you'll end up with curled and warped areas where the glue hits (and ripples when it contracts and cools). Project looks fantastic though!

Yeah I was about to ask what temp he used the gun at if it was dual temp. I have a dual temp and a low temp gun so I was wondering which would be better for gluing on the foam.

another tip for rivets that I like, is using those little craft "googly eyes", then paint over them. they're really cheap and they look pretty neat.

Its a been a few years, but Ive followed your tuts to flesh out a cheap knights costume for my son. Bracers, Shin guards and Sabtons! All with a dragon motif with rivets. Now Im back cause he's outgrown it and I need a refresher! I love your tuts! Thanks so much for posting!

I love this tutorial so much. They look so good, and they're so solid. It's worth mentioning too that heating your foam up also helps seal it, making painting on your modge podge mixture and paints a lot easier and gives it this nice smooth finish he gets. Once those pores in the foam are heat sealed you'll have a lot smoother finish because your foam won't soak up half of your products. It's done easiest with a heat gun, but can be done to a with other heating tools. The stove gets hot enough to seal it. So do torches. NEVER LIGHTERS. EVER. You'll melt your foam and it'll catch on fire and you'll have a bad time. A very bad time. Also! Each heating and molding session shrinks and hardens your foam. So when you cut out your patterns cut on the outside of your line, not the inside or it'll be smaller than you like once it's heated up and formed. If you want to add gashes or patterns to your foam you can use the blunt end of a pencil or an exacto knife and lightly score the surface of your foam. Make sure to not cut through the foam (unless you want to). When you heat it up the scores will open up and it'll look really cool. It's a very neat effect.

This is a going to be very helpful for the cosplay I am working on! I just like to add a couple things regarding craft form. Ive done the glue/water method and you need LOTS OF LAYERS! I had to put down at least 6 coats before I was satisfied that the foam wouldnt eat up the paint. I tried again with modge podge, and only needed 2 to 3 coats. I suggest putting just a little bit of water in it though, so you dont have to worry about brushstrokes appearing. I also heard that Plasti-Dip makes for a good sealant (and primer!) that Im going to try out for this project. And I like to reinforce my craft foam with some fabric. Particularly cheesecloth. Simply apply a sheet on the back of whatever you're working on (AFTER its been heated and shaped) and glue it down with modge podge/glue/water. Let dry completely and trim the excess. You can paint it whenever. Craft foam needs gentle handling, and having a backing reduces the chance of it tearing. :3
@1ManOnFir3
@1ManOnFir3 9 лет назад
Plastidip is excellent as it self levels, seals, and acts as a primer. Also dries relatively fast. And only takes 1-2 coats.

Nicely done! I will absolutely be using this One tip I have is that you may want to attach some cheese cloth to the back of your foam armor piece after shaping but before painting. Cheese cloth is rather stiff after the sealant goes on and will help to reinforce your foam armor

you might like to try using paper-fastener split pins. the brass ones look like rivets and they connect base materials extremely well. i've made an armlet, low quality steampunk style, and i used these split pins for rivet-like detail and they aren't too bad for moving parts
@deathknightrevan
@deathknightrevan 9 лет назад
I've also found that if you want to go for a worn look, after you apply your layer of metallic paint and let that set fully, go back with flat black paint, (I use acrylic) preferably in segments as you do not want it to fully dry! and after about 45 seconds take a towel and rub off as much as you can. this will allow dark spots, or "dirt", to be left behind in the spaces that would naturally be hard to clean. small details like that can go a long way. (and I recommend testing/practicing on a scrap first.)

Excellent tutorial thanks for sharing :) lol as a kid when experimenting with hot glue I discovered you can create sculptures using reusable cheap never dry modeling clay from Walmart etc. Clay can be used as a mold for hot glue interestingly hot glue dose not melt the modeling clay allowing hot glue to fill a clay mold and dry to that shape, Since clay is the never dry variety it can be reused to create multiple different shaped sculptures.. just thought I'd share. hmm sculpey is also pretty cheap and could also be sused for accents . I wonder if sculpey could be glued on then baked to hardness using heat gun or stove directly to armor instead of backing separately in stove I'll have to test that.
