Using electrical transformers it is possible to build electromagnets. We can get an electrical transformer, for example, from a phone adapter/charger, but not the modern lightweight ones but rather the older, heavy models.
The cores of the transformers are closed so that the magnetic field circulates inside them and creates a very weak external magnetic field. What we will do is open that core so that the magnetic field will also circulate to a large extent through the air and therefore will interact with ferromagnetic objects that we place in that area where the magnetic field passes through the air.
Transformer - Wikipedia: A transformer is a static electrical device that transfers electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction. It is commonly used to increase or decrease the voltage of alternating current (AC) electricity in power transmission and distribution systems.
Electromagnet - Wikipedia: An electromagnet is a type of magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by an electric current. It consists of a coil of wire wound around a core of ferromagnetic material. Electromagnets are widely used in applications such as electric motors, relays, solenoids, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines.
Magnetic field - Wikipedia: A magnetic field is a vector field that describes the magnetic influence of electric currents and magnetic materials. It represents the force exerted by magnets and moving charges and is responsible for the attraction or repulsion between magnetic materials.
Magnet - Wikipedia: A magnet is a material or object that produces a magnetic field and attracts ferromagnetic materials such as iron, nickel, and cobalt. Magnets have two poles, north and south, and exhibit various properties such as magnetic attraction, repulsion, and the ability to align with the Earth's magnetic field.
Electrical steel - Wikipedia: Electrical steel, also known as silicon steel or transformer steel, is a specialized steel alloy designed for use in electrical equipment such as transformers, electric motors, and generators. It has low core loss and high magnetic permeability, making it ideal for applications requiring efficient magnetic flux conduction and minimal energy loss.
