Very nice application. Similar to the Michael Fortune bandsaw jig in Fine Woodworking #199 for cutting template curves. His “finger” was clamped to the table instead of in the miter slot.

Nicely done video! Yes, you have make a great point: Flipping the template to the bottom of the workpiece simplifies the jig build and is obviously the stronger option. The downside is that the jig is hidden from view and following the jig will be done by memory + feel.

I see a lot of RU-vid videos that label themselves as brilliant. THIS ACTUALLY IS BRILLIANT!!! I mean who hasn't sweated bullets trying to get as close to the line as humanly possible free-handing it to minimize the amount of material the flush-trim bit will have to take off. I definitely will make one of these.

I almost didn’t watch this video for some reason but this is MADE for me! I am guy who hates to freehand stuff, so this really speaks to me. Especially on the bandsaw I’m very prone to go over the line by accident if I’m not super slow and this looks like it could get you really close really fast. More than the accuracy, the safety net of being prevented of going over the line is what speaks to me. ❤️👍🏻

Absolutely brilliant as always! A couple small mods and it can be a game changer. I’m going to make (or buy) and use it to cut 1/8” strips for wood bending. Using a table saw to cut 1/8” is sketchy so this will allow me to crank out thin strips or use for edge banding. Keep up the great work and enjoyed your guest appearance on Bourbon Moth. Hysterical 🤣😂😆

Very cool idea and I really appreciate you sharing your thought process, including the problems. I had a thought on the tighter radius issue but it's hard to put in words, but I'll try. Make the nose a circle, like 1 inch or less but in 3 layers. First layer has a half inch beam back to the body. Layers 2 and 3 are just the circle with an 1/8 inch W by 1/4 inch D in them. Use a 1/8 inch by 1/2" tall rib that is glued into the slot in the circles and across the bridge to the body. Under this template you can do your stack method with the other templates or just take an off cut off the same size stock you are cutting with a washer on top

Dude, you're a freaking genius. That's why I follow you lol. Where was this at last night. I was routing some pieces for with a curve to them and the router kept kicking back cuz I had to much material I guess. But this would have helped in the bandsaw portion of the process. Ill be buying a set or two.

Nice video of the prototyping process. I've been using very similar trimming jigs(albeit much beefier)for the best part of 10 years now, roughing out rifle stocks blanks A few things to note, this type of jig is harsh on the bandsaw blades as the radius tightens. Also if the workpiece allows you to over hang its ends with an extended template it will make a much cleaner cut as it enters and exits the work piece.

Love the idea. I get the thought of making it reversable for more options and the flat side for more stock cut off room. Why not combine both and every piece has a flat side and a unique guide/offset? One of the could also be just the part behind the blade, allowing for tighter curves. Obviously not foolproof as the others, but at that point but still provides a point of leverage and support as you guide. Think I will try some this weekend!

I think the straight thin cut side could use more area for the work piece to slide against. The profile side could use smaller radii. The jig out of aluminum or steel would prob work better with a smaller radius profile side. Awesome idea and I can see how useful it could be.

Thought about your radius/strength issue, maybe you could use a screw hook off the end of a thicker strip of wood to allow you to project into tighter radii? Or if the idea of metal that close seems dangerous, the same approach with a few stacked/glued plastic washers?

Since you have a relationship with Bits and Bits, maybe you can share my idea for flush trimming. If someone would make a flush trim bit with inter changeable bearings that very in 1/32” diameters it would make the process so easy with a nicer finish. Say start with a bearing 1/16” bigger than flush, then change to 1/32” bigger than flush, then finish with flush. I think this would solve all the problems with flush trimming. If changing bearings isn’t practical they could sell a set of bits like that. Just an idea I’ve had for years.

Cut the top plate/guide very narrow and reinforce it with metal. That would give it strength and rigidity while leaving the guide end MDF. I think that the thickness does not matter much if it allows for the right height above the table for the workpiece. Just adding a 1/2 inch wide 1/4 inch thick piece of steel to the top would work. Glue the steel bar between the tightening knobs with the end just shorter than the guide leaving 1/2 inch or less of just MDF at the end. I think that would help with tighter curves. Removing the trailing guide as well may help.
