@@BornAgainBoating I just got a brand new set of 350 Verados to replace my 2005 250 Verados. Can anyone tell me any differences between my new motors and my old ones? Seems like it's basically the same exact motor.
Great another thing I want to do for my boat lol 😂. Great idea. By the way I fixed my water leak for 25 cents. Really I use a quarter with the washer and problem solved. Till I get to replace the check valve on top of the engine. I also have a mercury verado. Thank Arron, stay safe and have fun. 🌴👍😎
Great Video Aaron! The only thing I would add is to always make sure the threads on threaded plugs are always greased up. Can't get those plugs out when they are caked with salt and sieized up.
Great idea. Being a Great Lakes boater, I don’t worry about flushing my motor as often as salt water boaters do...but it’s vitally important for all motors to have a clean free flowing system.
Thank you sir for this great idea, and also telling the importance of flushing your outboards. It boggles the mind how people on here will argue about how flushing isn’t necessary. Now I get that commercial fishing/Dive boats don’t really have time nor do most of the staff care to flush their outboards, however they can’t complain when things Corrode. But I guess all those guys down your way keep you in business. 👍😬
Yous guys have a fantastic channel here! I mean, I don’t even OWN a boat - never have. But I’ve always wanted one. If my dream ever comes to fruition, I’ll probably be poking around here every day. Keep up the great work!
Hi B.O.B, I don't know how you come up with these great and pertinent topics every week, but some how you do! Thank you!... I can't wait to convert my flushing to what you taught me here! It will save me a lot of time!
l thought something needed to be said for people that do not know this. Hooking up the hose to the hose connection circulates the water around the powerhead, but you can fry the impellor if you run the engine connected like that. That flushing is done without starting the engine. If you start the engine, you need to still connect the muffs.
Not always. Some engines must be run. Please people, read your owners manual. The engine manufacturers spend a lot of money making this manual, it is almost always right.
The quick connects make flushing the engine a lot easier. We switched to that this year. We put on plastic quick connects instead of metal because our engine has plastic threads and we don’t want to damage the threads
Nice setup! The rigging tube on my Yamaha is one of the really packed ones. The last time I was in there I could barely run new fuel hose without a struggle!
Awesome idea. Wish my boat came with that. Save time on flushing 2 engines. I do notice the new v8 verados the flush hose is not as long as the i6 verado I previously had. Only comes out maybe 3 inches
Great video! I know boats, but I always learn something from your videos!! I was in Key Largo last weekend - wish I knew where y'all were so I could come say hi!
Power boating is a dream come true for guys (and gals) who have it in their DNA. Most, who don't are converted once they have been out and about. I've taken a few Nail Biters out and by the time they get back to land, just want to get a boat. They'd say; "well, I was nervous and then scared and then enraptured, almost speechless. Most of us have witnessed that many times. The guy with 3 life jackets on and who's hat and sunglasses find they're way to Davey Jones Locker, often time, don't even care and they can't get the grin off their faces. But, we nor they are adept to complicated maintenance protocols. A simple oversight, especially a 3 or 4 outboard engine clusters can destroy one, two or God forbid all 3 etc. Now, some secondhand outboards may still have a warranty, so when u buy it...ask about it. It may even have an extended warranty? (bonus) But...if it does have coverage and the manufacturer frowns on your little trick methods, u may be in for a disappointment? The best answer to how and where or why IT Happened should always be the truth; "Just say I don't know...that's yer story and u need to stick to it. Talk to your own insurance people and ask for the; "No Matter What" options. A qualified outboard engine tech, especially one that retails them too will provide you with a detailed and qualified maintenance schedule. It is as Good as Gold, if the insurance people balk.
very informative even to me who doesn't have an outboard! When you do the i/o, boat, can you talk about how we could install a flushing system to that especially if it's an older or cruiser like say the late 80s early 90s 170 horsepower model. And that had a separate cooling system , having that external tank.
@ 2:15 "You can buy products that increase your water pressure." Yes, they're called pumps. No static device can increase pressure without reducing volume.
Flushing the engine can even be done with the fresh water supply (outside shower) if your boat has it. I have done it when I have traveled to Bahamas and I have anchor for 3 or 4 days at a time, and I make sure I flush the engine while im there. Your can never put enough fresh water on an engine 2 keep the salt out. 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
My boat is on a freshwater lake and we do not have a hose anywhere nearby to use to flush the engine. Could I flush it with the lake water maybe if it was filtered and using a water pump?
Love your channel, thanks. I have a 2000 Johnson 90HP Ocean Pro with the fitting on the back, as part of the telltale. If the engine is cold, does the flush get through all of the engine even though the thermostat is closed?
F Burke yes the flushing connector flushs the whole engine water pressure causes the poppet valve to open and flush whole engine only run engine with ear muffs on get the double feed muff JT 🇺🇸🇺🇸🐟🐠🎣🛥🌴⛱😊😊🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Couple questions about flushing outboards, the motors has to be started and run during this process correct? How could you do this I was attachment to an older Mercury or Evinrude 25 horse motor one that say 25 years old or more? Would it be possible? Or would you just put them earmuffs on it and run it for a minute? And how long would it take to flush out with an earmuffs?
Is it bad to wire this to the boat's water tank/deck shower plumbing with the appropriate valves for selecting destination? If no, what type of pump do you think is beefy enough for two Merc FourStrokes? Kinda want to do this to my boat but I think it'll be more convenient to just use the water tank that gets filled up once in a while via the hose vs using the hose every time. Thanks and keep up the good work!
You can flush it with the engine trimmed up. Just be mindful that if you have it on a trailer and it's trimmed all the way up, if the powerhead is lower than the lower unit you can fill the engine with water. So make sure the lower unit is below the powerhead, which on a boat in the water, I don't see how you could do that ;)
@@jimr6281 so there is the difference, on a 4 stroke its like the guy its telling you, but you have 2 stroke and there is no oil in the engine, 2 strokes can even run upsidedown. In your case you can flush them trimmed up as long as water will run from lower unit to the power head you have no problems. Just see that the pisser is pissing. You flush with Muffs right ???
The hose at my marina doesn’t have enough pressure to make it come out of the telltale. Would using a threaded hose nozzle to increase pressure work or maybe duct taping over the water pick up on lower unit?
Great video but we have 110 psi at the spigot and no pressure regulator. Yes we have sprinkler/shower heads pop from the pressure. Curious if pressure that high will damage the engine.
It could, it could split some of the hoses, or fittings, or break clamps, the impellers at wide open only get up into the 20's! So that's like 5 times the pressure lol :) That's crazy you have that much pressure at your spigots lol you should put a regulator somewhere to save your sprinkler heads lol
Interesting ok. Don’t want the pressure regulator, the benefits out way the negatives. Little things like washing things is easier, pots fill faster, etc
Hooking up to the flush port will not flush any motor 100% that is cool as the thermostat will be closed. Even if your motor is warm and you hook up your hose to the flush port the cool water your sending through the flush ports will close the thermostat under 60 seconds..... Thermostats will open at 160 degrees give or take a few degrees and the tap water you are sending through the flush port is probably 65 degrees if you live in the south and more like 50 degrees if you live up north. Do yourself a favor and hook up a good pair of muffs to the lower unit and run\flush the motor a good 10 to 15 minutes....... after that you can shut the motor off and flush using flush connection if it gives you that warm fuzzy feeling
Before you say it yes I already know how stupid I am... how shot is my impeller if I started my motor for about 30 seconds (maybe less) with just the garden hose connected to the flush hose without muffs on ?
No, you are great! Your impeller is going to be fine, we start them on the hose using only the flush attachment all the time! But you can only run it for a couple of minutes and at idle speed, you don't want to rev the engine up with just the flush attachment because the impeller will create pressure and push the water away from it, sucking in air from the bottom and burning up. But for 30 seconds at idle, the impeller doesn't make enough pressure to push all the water away and run dry, it would have had water on it and keep it wet! You're fine!
I’m currently have an issue with the flushing. What’s the pressure needed to flush a motor? I’m using the boat shower pump but it seems that it hasn’t enough psi!. Thanks and awesome tips
I really dont know what the pressure needs to be for the flushing, I'd say around 10 or so, you would think that the shower pump would have enough pressure, but sounds like it doesn't, maybe the distance from the pump to the engine and the low volume of water is whats messing with you
I have hard time accessing fresh water sometimes, was considering a tank with a pump. How many gallons of water do you think would adequately flush a mid range outboard (Yamaha F115)?
What about a flushing rig for an IO? A question?? How long should you flush a V8 that's used in salt water? Note: The boat doesn't live in salt water,it's put in high and dry.
If the engine is closed loop you can hook up a system basically the same way we did here! The hose sizes will probably be different though. Same time 10 minutes or so
Wouldn't that effect the cooling of the engine because of the additional volume of water in the hose. What if you put a check valve near the engine so the engine doesn't have to fill the entire hose up?
That's what that flush fitting does. It's just a check valve that only opens when water is sent through the flush port. Now on some engines that don't have a valve like that, yes, you would want to put one in.
@@BornAgainBoating cool. Thank you so much, I never really saw this before but am always struggling with the issue of having to flush the boat while on the lift.
Casey C use a quarter to plug the hole with the washer. I have the same problem. It will run fine like that till you get time to fix it. The check valve on top of the engine needs replacing. Follow it hose up to the top and you will find it. Not to bad of a job to do. Will be doing mine soon. Just got the parts the other day.
Where did u get that black tube peace that goes on the back of the transom where you can put the rigging tube through it and have like a nice seal around it
My verados overheat when running with flush port hooked up. Did some reading and was told it’s not recommended to run the engines while flushing this way. What’s yours take on that?
You don't need to run the engine while flushing it from the flush port. You can run the engine using the port, but its not made to be ran for a long time from there. Just to start it up, check stuff out, then turn it off. If you want to run it for longer than say a couple of minutes, you should get the muffs out!
You probably can only use the quick disconnect in the back. Most Johnsons only have that port on the back and its the tale tell as well so you can't plug it
Jake Johnson ... I don’t know much about Scout, if a good deal came up on one, I’d check it out. I’m really not as caught up on the brand as much as I am the type of boat I want.
Mechanics round these parts, love ethanol, a dirt river, and lazy ''push the EZ button'', willy-weekenders! I'm sure you do too. Running 10 minutes every single day in a 70 gallon Rubbermaid horse trough, is how I keep my 'Zuki fuel cooler, and water passages clean of salt and St. Johns River dirt, from having me visiting ''said'' mechanics. Use the motor flushing ports? NO WAY❗....guaranteed clogged fuel cooler💀in a few years. ''I GOT THE T-SHIRT'', and videos, to prove it.
