Yea exactly, GMBN always say stuff like you have to learn a bunny hop and you have to use that in a jump, they say always the same, pinkbike is more detailled in there video’s👌
@@nickster0290 Yes, and they often say you should "use your hips" somehow to get more height, etc, but that doesn't make any sense without explaining what to do with the hips and why. Well, in comes Ben and lays it out, makes almost every aspect of it completely clear. What a boss.
this is awesome. as a pretty capable rider, I enjoy teaching my friends how to ride "better" but it's always really hard because I don't know exactly what's happening when things like getting bucked or dead sailoring occurs. having the physics behind each move really helps me understand why it all happens
I've been jumping since I was a kid racing BMX in the 80's. Yet I've still watched a lot of jumping tutorials to try and refine my technique and prevent crashes. This is the BEST jumping tutorial I've ever seen. Thank you for sharing your gifts Ben Cathro! This whole series has been awesome!
Popping riding the back wheel- lean back made so much sense I’ve been riding dirt jumps and pump tracks indoors in Toronto and figuring out how to get lift instead of absorbing is hard and following some other RU-vid’s vid that say stand up and seem to tell you to pull up the bars just rotates you into a nose wheelie on a transition which is cool but not good when not confident! Ben explains the physics and what is going on with the bike and your body input! Thanks Ben! He explains things in a way someone learning can understand easily!
Seriously have watched this video so many times. Here are my notes: - Go straight, pedals level, no turning on approach. - Knees above toes. Bend elbows and knees on approach. If you want to pop more, dip down more on approach. - Starting with the transition, not too early, press into face with arms and legs smoothly and evenly up the transition. - Rotate back, extend arms fully back in line with your fork. Head behind stem. Unweight the front wheel at the end of the lip. Allow your body to rotate backwards with the takeoff, do NOT lean forward. Drive legs into the remainder of the lip, making sure that your center mass is above rear tire and not too far forward. - For flat jumps, you may have to initiate a bunny hop **pull harder** with your arms to get your body in the correct position. For steep face jumps, this will feel more forward. You basically want your weight vertically above your rear tire when you pop. - Pop/straighten legs while pulling back on the bars **key**. Press the back wheel all the way up the lip, keeping heels down. - If you nose dive, you did not shift your weight far enough back prior to popping. - Relax. Let the bike level up beneath you.
You should get an award for this series! Absolute gold. I'd love to see an episode in season 2 that is all about suspension setup and optimization!!! It would also be great to see some analysis of common friday fails crashes to explain what people are doing wrong so as to avoid making the same mistakes!
I'd love to see an episode on riding technical terrain(i.e. roots, rocks, slabs)and possibly one on riding in dry, loose conditions. This series has been a blast from start to finish. Great work, guys.
I’ve never heard the ‘physics’ of jumping so well explained. Especially enjoyed the bit where you explained boosting perpendicular to the lip and how that affects rotation. I’ll never be able to watch Friday Fails the same again!
Best explained how to jump video I’ve seen. Jumping has been my nemesis for a while now, I’ve never been able to pin point what I’m doing wrong but now I know. Cathro you are a Don. Man I wish I booked a coaching course with you years ago when I had the chance.
As someone who's been trying to learn to jump this entire year, your vid helped me out the most. The ONE thing I kept getting wrong was where I should be on the bike. Every video I've watched tells me what I should be doing...compress into the face, unweight the front wheel at the lip...blah blah blah... But NEVER did they mention about where your weight should be to prevent the bike from launching you forward! Bravo, my dude.
I love that you can tell that he is really progressing the meaning of these mtb terms and thinking about what they really mean, not just using other vids as his research.
Also, make sure you have enough air in your rear tire or you can easily squish out to one side or another when really pumping the take off….Learned the hard way.
Just wanted to thank you Ben, Max, Glen and anyone else involved in making this series. I just started riding about two months ago, and these lessons have been at the forefront of my mind every single session.
I didn't like Cathro when I first came across his videos but I've got to say this instructional series is awesome and now I look forward to the content he puts out. This is the first video I've seen - and I've seen a lot - that made me understand why and how I'm screwing up my jumps and what to do to correct it. He explains it all in a way that translates to the things I already do on the bike in other scenarios. I've probably seen all parts of these techniques explained by other people but never got the entire picture. I hope I'm going to remember this stuff when the snow melts because I can tell it's going to help me improve faster. I'm really grateful to all of you guys for making this series.
A round of applause to the people in charge of audio-video editing and special effects! As great as Ben's content is, it's been taken to a whole new level with the graphics and slow-motion effects. P/S - How many Wilhelm screams were used in the entire series? 😜
I'm old, want to jump more effectively, with consistency and live to tell about it! This series is awesome! Great depiction of the mechanics of it all!! Thanks
I’ve reached the point where I’m good with trail riding, handling, drops etc. all these videos on bunny hopping(esp season 2 ep) and jumping and you showing the slow mow has really helped me. Recording myself I realized that what I feel and what I’m doing is two differen things 😂
Finally! 😊 Drops = Jumps👍👍👍and from the mouth of Ben Cathro, no less! I drove two coaches mad with my assertion that it's jumping, and I don't like it! 😂 Brilliant, thorough walk through of the various techniques - maybe I'll be ready to try an actual hump-jump soon 😎
BEST HOW TO VIDEO/TUTORIAL EVER!!!!! SERIOUSLY, plenty of slow mo, explained well. I’ve been riding a long time. I’ve watched literally every video out there. I’ve got no problem clearing jumps (I raced dh so it’s always been speed , speed , speed ). Now I want to get some pop and style. After watching this a few times and practicing for a couple of hrs really focusing on bits of this at a time. Then the next bit. Then putting it all together I was clearing larger tables. Where before I was having to pin it. Now I go “trail speed” and it’s so much easier and feels better. After a few days it became natural and I wasn’t thinking about it. CHEERS MR CATHRO. Not only did you help a regular guy out. But I’m getting laid ALOT more.
Thks is the most in depth 'How to Jump' video out there. Even I know how to jump decently well, I do not realise my techniques or mistakes and why this or that happened in the air till now. I definitely will be more aware of my body position now and will try all variations mentioned. Ben you're a legend 😍
Agree, one of the best jumping videos out there. I really love how the mistakes are broken down. Also the comment on different angle of leaning back based in the steepness of the jump, so helpful. I’m trying to learn to jump in my 40s and it’s so true that my fellow riders that jumped bmx as kids have no real idea they just send it beautifully. Thank you.
yeah i've watched a ton of "how to jump" vids and eventually I figured out how to jump. This video, Hands down is the best i've ever seen, thank you!!! this is awesome, I wish this had been out there when I was getting started on jumps.
Brilliant series! Definitely learned a lot! Now to find some time to actually practice it all … Highly recommended your series to some other beginner friends who also found your videos super useful, informative and well presented! And funny most of all :) Looking forward to season 2! If you are ever planning on giving lessons at Nevis Range again I’ll be the first to sign up ;)
The most thorough explanation on RU-vid! Thank you guys! You are doing fantastic job for us beginners looking how to learn stuff smart way not hard way
2022, the year of the jump! I turned 60 last friday and I am determined to jump this year. I have ridden since I was 6, but never got into jumps and stunts. Videos like this will be a great help. I think a lot of it is just start small and keep jumping until it clicks. Self video and replay should help. Might start a channel....'200 days of learning to jump' or something. I also assume I will crash and burn a few times, but that is no big deal, been there done that. - Cheers
Ben, great vid, and great series. I found this after my shoulder surgery. I can't wait to get on my bike and put these vids to use. You do an excellent job breaking down the skills. I love to ride but can't wait to go faster and smoother.
Awesome series! Really entertaining, digestible, well filmed and edited. Particularly liked the physical explanations and diagrams as to why certain moves can go wrong on the bike. Thanks Ben and PB!
i’ve watched this video a ton of times and finally got it so i went out at my local trails and i’m clearing and hitting jumps i couldn’t before perfectly, thanks.
Best jumping video ever done. Seriously we have seen them all. I manage to jump comfortably on some jumps but on the steep ones i nose divided and now i finally understand why.
Best series around. Now I just need to work out how to plug this into my noggin Neo styles so it stays in there when approaching jump/berm/turn/drop/feature/etc 😜
thank you Pinkbike, thank you Ben.. this is an awesome series, thanks for all your hardwork.. this series thought me/us so much.. for beginners like me , this is like a holy grail of mtb.. we now enjoy our local trails so much more because of the lessons we learned on this series, thanks again, good job guys!
LOVELY video!!! I like how in the end you stated that those that do it well mostly have NO clue how they are doing it. SO true!!! But some of us need to see this tech detail so we can confidently go experience those jumps and adjust, knowing the 'right' path! Thanks for producing this good stuff!
A fantastic, realistic, completed explanation of mountain bike! The perfect rules to mix all ingredients to make the best mountain bike for us!!! Thank you!!! You are real number 1!👑🙏
One thing is to watch these series being a complete newb awaiting his bike to be shipped. Watching this after actually done some riding is whole another experience. Now I understand all described mistakes and appreciate how much into details these series dig. Cheers Ben!
Somehow Ben always explains it way better than any other coach I've taken lessons , or watched videos from. I love the "physics first" style of teaching. Thanks a lot Ben and PB !
This series has been just awesome, what a guy and the way you explain everything! Love the humour too, jumping’s my weakness so definitely going to keep practicing!! Thanks Cathro 🙌
I have done some jumping before, but I watched this video, then went out and practiced, and it made a huge difference. My jumps felt smoother and more consistent, and I was more comfortable and confident. Great series, Ben and PB!
A thank you (once again) from all the coaches out there for making our lives easier! I'll always point clients in the direction of your video's so they can understand WHY I make them do the things I do, and so they can understand HOW things are meant to happen.
This is by far the "best" how-to-jump video I´ve watched. And I watched them all ;) Many thanks, I can´t wait to try it, once the weather gets better...
This video series is a masterpiece - I'd watch the work of Cathro and the team on pretty much any topic. Also this got me really excited to head down to try some jumps at Cathkin Braes, so thank you again :)
Explaining the physics, the forces and the intention of the technique makes it very clear. Now I just need to find talent at my age! Best video on jumping ever IMO.
Great video clear detailed description of what happens in each phase. Love your fun delivery for all of series helped me no end now fall of less but when I do am going faster 😀
Well done. Thanks so much for the whole series. Lots of stuff packed in there. I will keep re-watching until the Second Season comes out. Ben's is Awesome. Thanks also to Max and Glen.
The section at 11:40 about centering your mass over the rear wheel is something I’ve never heard before and explains well how to prevent that forward rotation. Bravo lads!
This is the absolute best information to consume if you're new to jumping and thank you, Ben, for putting it out there in to the ether. Well presented, well illustrated and shot. Minty fresh!
Massive congratulations to everyone! The episodes are by far the most detailed, comprehensive, fun, and enjoyable to watch. Opened my horizon and affirmation in my riding. Great job Ben and team! Happy New year! Cheers from the Philippines! 🎉
Very relatable series on how to further develop your skills towards becoming an advanced rider. Ben thanks for putting together these incredibly helpful videos.
