14-16 knots, boots & airush razor 13m👌👌 Maybe I would like a larger kite, but what type of kite would be good for unhooking in a size of approx. 15m? I’d say an XR type of kite, or a GTS? I would then still use my 142 Naish Monarch, because freestyle!

14-16 knots is lightwind? You guys are spoiled by wind. Light wind - this is wind when you barely can go upwind with standatd TT kitesurfing technique using 15-17m kite and door board with 7-8 k. sq. cm. board (like 160 x 48 or so). And this is 7-9 knots.

Great video! Another factor for I've noticed for lightwind riding - the outside temperature. Cold air is denser and so we need less wind speed in a cold place than a warm one to generate the same amount of power in the kite.

light days are awesome, spots arn't crowded on these days and it's a challenge to keep going which makes it really fun with a 12m in less then 12 knots of wind.

Great video here, I love also light wind session, I totally agree with you and you learn something to me about the benefit of C-Shape in light wind (around 10 knots and under I use a 14m single strut kite but it is not made to make tricks it is mostly about riding/carving, around 12knot I can have fun with my 11m 3 struts open-c shape). I agree so much on the importance of the kiteboard, I have 2 136x41 boards, and one has a huge rocker and the other is quite flat ; the difference is about 2/3knots and most important I can have fun with the flatter one when I can barely ride with the other one...it was my beginner board, so I may buy a newer one probably a little big bigger (ie : 139x43) for my 75kg weight. I ride with 24m lines and 27 when I use the 14m single strut kite.

I'm a somewhat beginner of only 3 years experience and I really love light wind days. I can go out with a 12m2 and 10-12 knots and have a blast with my buddies. And I fell very safe in these conditions :) Plus the homespot is nearly empty :)

Really fascinating considerations about kite type. I ride XR6s and can ride them in very low wind as long as the water is flat but like you said, I did notice an immediate loss of power as soon as the speed drops (so coming in fast and feeling powered for a trick and losing all power as soon as I edge or send the kite). I thought this was unavoidable since the power is generated by apparent wind but you're saying normally less powerful kite shapes are less affected by this. I'm really curious now.

Hello my friend and thanks for your knowledge. I am a quite experienced and advanced windsurfer and I am a beginner kite surfer I am just able to kitesurfing under predictable conditions , I can water start easily, ride here and there and I can travel upwind. So no more big difficulties 😄 I haVe a question. Whenever the wind goes down as some days before that I was enjoying kiting ,with my 9m kite and finally the wind dropped down, I couldn’t maintain my speed and my upwind skill so I had to come back by bodydrag. My board is a carbon one 1.40x 42. And I could ride it and maintain my planning only downwind and by making some figures of 8 I tried once a big board 1,59x 45 and EVERYTHING was very easy. A coach that I know told me that I could buy something like that in order to use it in light wind conditions and always on the safe side especially if there are not so many riders close buy to give me a hand of help. Another coach said that with my 80 kilos I should NEVER ride something longer than 1,45 x43.and that even if I will buy this big board, I will never be better as it is so easy and that anyway in some sessions more I will be anyway much better and familiar with the board that I own now so I will not need the big one anymore, not even from the lightwind What is your opinion. I would appreciate if you can give me an idea

Hi Ben Great video, thanks! Something I missed and would like to know more about is how to trim/depower the bar for lightwind. I keep hearing that one should actually depower a bit in light wind, but I have no clue why or how much is needed.
@BenBeholzVlogs
@BenBeholzVlogs 3 года назад
True - good Idea !
@BigTonY34
@BigTonY34 2 года назад
I'm still a beginner, but here is what I understand : If you ride with trim to minimum (i.e. "not" depowered at all, let's call-it like this) this mean you have "long" front lines, and thus "short" back lines (relatively speaking). And having short back lines means that a slight pull on the bar can lead to an excess angle of attack in light wind (not enough lift from the wind to keep front lines tight), leading to back stalling. If you shorten the front lines by trimming, you will thus extend the back lines (still relatively speaking), and avoid (or push back) back stalling. Correct me if I'm wrong ?

Nice vid as usual Ben. You mention parking the kite and feeling the resistance of the bar. Is this better than working the kite to generate speed? Also do you avoid edging as hard as riding powered, as sometimes I feel I can stall the kite a bit when that happens. My biggest kite is a 13.5 gts and I always assumed the xr would be better in lightwinds based on the shape. But with the less struts the gts would be the preferred lightwind model?
@BenBeholzVlogs
@BenBeholzVlogs 3 года назад
Hey Steven, thank you ! You can work the kite up and down but this will only generate power if you make a low sinus carve (beside the waterstart). If you wonna go upwind or generate speed in most cases it works better when not working the kite to much... In my opinion the xr just pretend to have power... To me the kite with more consistent power is the gts...

Hi Ben, great video and channel!, curious advice on trying to use the same board for light and strong wind. Can you expand on why's that? Also, you say the xr6 seems like it generates power but it doesn't. Can you expand? Are you only referring to big sizes only? Lastly, which gts sizes were you riding in the video? Thanks!
@BenBeholzVlogs
@BenBeholzVlogs 3 года назад
Hey Hugo, thank you for the feedback! (once again my personal opinion) About the board: When I go kitesurfing I try to keep things similar. The wind changes all the time, the water surface and current changes from one second to the other. The challenge is to do the same trick in all kind of conditions. That‘s why I have only one board for riding in straps. With my weight and size it is a 139cm choice. I know my board, I know how it reacts no mater the conditions. This gives me simply more space to compensate other things that are always changing all the time... About the xr6: Yes in light winds I felt it more extremely. The kite does already pull a lot by it selfe but when I‘m edging hardly into the wind, like it is needed for a backmobe for example, the kite stalls down. This image could make more clear what I mean (just to visualize it better) Every kite has (in that speed it is flying) a power potential of 100%, a xr6 offers already 80% of these 100% by simply riding and if you are popping hardly there is only 20% left to pull you up. A gts has a potential of 100% aswell but offers you only 60% by riding, If you are popping hardly it pulls you out of the water with another 40%. (The rest must be compensated with kitecontrol ) This is not only when it comes to big sizes, but you are right. The bigger the kite and the lower the wind the more you will feel it... In the video I‘ve been riding a 15m gts. Could I answer the questions good enough ?

I have a 17m Zephyr 27m lines with 148/47 Bronq XL board (find both very good), I'm 80kg, can go as you say 11 knots in small chop but upwind only from 12/13 knots, my teacher told me to move it in sinus to maximize speed, and to me seams work... as you told never charge to much upwind is important, and is even more important never sheet in completely the bar or connect the lines to the kite in the strong wind position to achieve the same result, so to not stall the kite

I have always ridden 139 in straps but been wondering if going into 142 makes more sense. I thought 139 would be better holding a kite in overpowered conditions but in reality I get few of those conditions, so maybe for allaround 142 would be better?
