Let us know in the comments how the experiment went, and if you have done any other chemistry experiments with your family. And let know if you would like to see more family-friendly chemistry on this channel.

This is gold my friend. I'm definitely gonna start making my own magnesium carbonate for training purpose. Fantastic video!

32g mgso4 + 16g naco3 = climbing chalk, 2:1 ratio 250ml for 32g mgso4 solubilization 250ml for 16g naco3 solubilization

@@ChemTalk I combined 375g mgso4 with 200g oven prepared sodium carbonate to get 170g magnesium carbonate. I find the yield very low, what do you think can be done to improve yield? Would heating up the resulting solution after 170g of magnesium carbonate sieved out help?
@ChemTalk

@@marcusvos7060 what percent yield did you get, did you calculate it?

amazing video! I wonder how to make a stable manesium carbonate block? right now it crambles unlike the store bought gym chalk.

Thank you! We haven't tried to stabilize it yet

Cool experiment, and I really like the narration. Will try it with my kids. Would be interesting to measure the change in mass of the sodium bicarbonate after its decomposition into sodium carbonate. Thanks for posting!
@ChemTalk
@ChemTalk 3 года назад
Thanks for the comment! Let us know how the experiment goes. The change in mass should theoretically be (molar mass of sodium carbonate) / (2* molar mass of sodium bicarbonate). So it should lose just over a third of its mass. That could be bonus experiment #2.

Yeah, it's lots of fun - and then you have your own hand chalk!

To clarify, i'm figuring the decomposition to which you refer in your "bonus experiment," (8:30 or so), is Magnesium Bicarbonate to Magnesium Carbonate, correct?

It is magnesium carbonate, MgCO3. We suggest not easting anything from the chemistry lab
