New wood-workers - Don't be too hard on yourself for mistakes. My goal when I'm in the shop is to make sawdust - sometimes I also make a beautiful and functional item, other times I make expensive firewood. I do however always succeed at making sawdust so I have achieved my goal for the day.

Love to see a top 5 mistakes vid. Haven't been wood working too long, but probably my biggest mistake that takes the joy out of woodworking and a project is expecting and wanting a project to be perfect and being annoyed when it was not. I still strive for perfection but now know most people won't even notice my mistakes and who cares cause mistakes are just "character"! Also love you intertwining your faith in our Lord Jesus Christ subtlety into your videos, inspired me to start reading the Word daily again! Love your projects, vids, and enthusiasm! God Bless!

Love your channel! My Dad is 81 and he’s been making stuff out of wood his whole life. He likes your channel and it has inspired him to make the farmhouse style coffee table. He’s in the process of getting the wood so he hasn’t started the actual project yet. I’m going to be helping him. (He’s 81, blind in one eye and is missing a thumb) we’re excited about this project. It will keep him busy and it will bring the both of us closer together! Love your channel! You don’t realize how you’re impacting people for good. God Bless and thanks again!!!!

I fell for those mistakes, 1- choosing difficult projects to start of with high result expectations. 2- if I don’t have such tool I cannot get the same result. 3- not doing my homework to try to learn the basic skills. 4- buying cheapest tools which cause frustration and poor results. 5- not having a clear path to follow to achieve personal / skill growth. Keep up the great work... I love your channel it’s different and really not just trying to through out content but you are focused on delivering useful yet entertaining content.

I began my woodworking journey in April on this year. I lost my job due to covid earlier this year and since I had alot of free time I decided to build myself a bed frame. An old friend saw my bed frame and wanted me to build her one as well. That became tbe first of many sales ive had this year. I'm beyond blessed to have found something I love and get to make a bit of extra money on the side. Watching your channel makes me happy since It feels like I found a little community of other people just like me. Thanks Matt, keep doing what your doing and appreciate everything you do

I've been woodworking for several years but haven't ever tried to make money with it. Your videos have been just what I needed to get started. I got my first order this weekend for a set of end tables and a coffee table. I made these three end tables based on your design and posted on Facebook Marketplace. They haven't sold but they have led 3 people to inquire about pricing and custom work. The 3rd inquiry led to the sale. Now my mind is racing about the possibilities. Thank you so much for your inspiring videos and encouraging content. Also, I love that you aren't afraid to show your faith in Jesus Christ front and center. Keep up the great work!!!

The mistakes I’ve made wood working: 1) waiting too long to learn how to use hand planes and other hand tools 2) goes for most tools but buying cheap bar clamps (Harbor Freight) rather than saving up to buy better quality (Jorgensen) 3) buying a jointer early on, I sold it when I moved three years ago and I don’t miss it 4) selling my work too cheap 5) comparing myself and my work to other people on RU-vid and IG who have put in way more time than me and feeling like I’m less of a woodworker when we are all growing and learning and we have to start somewhere

There is so much you can do with wood, especially if you are an artist with it. Very high end pieces go for big bucks. Check out ArtfulHome.com and look at the furniture. You have a life ahead of you. You will need to find a college or master to teach you. Look here. bit.ly/2J5vchP

The end of this video really resonated with me. My neighbor is a wood worker as well. We make vastly different things, but we work together and bounce ideas off of each other. We lend each other tools. I recently used his jointer for the cutting board I'm making. He uses my table saw when he needs it. This craft needs to be less about competition and more about community. We all love it. Our projects come out better with some collaboration. My number one mistake as a new wood worker, too much research and not enough action. Don't get lost in the sauce of RU-vid. Don't research your way out of making something. Don't look at all the fancy tools RU-vidrs have and get discouraged. Do you have a saw, sandpaper, glue, and a couple clamps? Get out there and make something. TRY something. Learn from your mistakes. You'll surprise yourself.

Matt...you've gone and done it. You have inspired my wife to get into woodworking. I've wanted to get into it for a long time. Now we can do it together. Just bought a table and miter saw today. Before you try to make money woodworking make sure you really want to do the work involved in the project you are going to build. I started a business selling bunk beds made out of common 2x6. I sold 4 pretty easily, made money on each deal, and I quit. I had not thought through the work I was actually going to be doing to build bunk beds. I quit because I realized there was nothing about 2x6 bunk beds that even felt like woodworking to me. It felt more like being a framing carpenter hauling roof joist around. I spent hours sorting through 8' 2x6 lumber at home depot and then re-stacking it. I hauled them home and realized that I could not work on them in my shop because it is in the basement and it is too small to work on 8 feet of anything. So I packed them into the garage where I had no work bench or any permanent setup. once I was done with the build I had to take it all apart by myself and load in into my truck and haul it to the customer and re-assemble it. 2x6 lumber is heavy, and I ain't 20 anymore. So, now I have a list entitled "50 Small Projects I Can Sell." Everything from cutting boards to board games to kitchen utensils are listed. They all fit in my 160 square foot shop and sorting through 1" thick hard wood is a joy. Thanks for all your encouragement.

Matt, great stuff again. Love this. To me, the single most important thing you mentioned was making your project unique. You HAVE to do something that differentiates what makes your table, cutting board, flag or whatever, DIFFERENT than the others. If you can do this, sales will be much easier and people wont be beating you up on price, because there is nothing to compare it to. The other thing, is DON’T give in on price. Set a price that you think is fair, and hold to it. You will find the buyer that values your time and talent.

Another awesome video. Yes i have made some mistakes learned from them and just continue on. Mis-measured, mis-marked, mis-cut and not all at the same time. It happens. Can't wait to see your ideas for that video.

Matt, I just started woodworking in part because of your videos! Thanks for your content and ideas. I've been doing all of my work from my 4ft x 10ft apartment deck where we have some furniture. It's tough and time consuming but I can't keep putting it off. Most of all thanks for your love of the Lord! That's what I like about your channel the most! God bless you!

Awesome! As always! Thank You, Matt! I started woodworking 6 years ago so I am still a beginner and my biggest mistake was trying to collect as many tools as I could, thinking that will improve my woodworking skills. But no... The only thing that can improve your woodworking skills is actually doing the work and making the sawdust. Cheers!

Great video! I am watching you grow and it won't be long before you are number one! Believe It! Top 5 1. Not charging enough. I was worth way more than I thought I was. 2. Thinking I had to know everything about woodworking. 3 Thinking I had to buy every tool before I actually needed it for a job. 4. Always upset that my projects weren't perfect. There are always going to be some small imperfections that nobody will notice. 5. Was afraid to ask for advise when I would get stuck trying to figure something out. Thanks for what you do! Still super new to my business but my mistake was not staying organized and clean in the shop. I'm not like insane dirty but it has gotten where I am constantly trying to find something. I ended up having to shut down for a whole week to clean and organize. Lesson learned..... Put tools up and keep the place clean to increase efficiency

I’ve gotten hooked on your videos over the past few days! I’ve always enjoyed woodworking and wondered if it was a hobby that I could profit from in retirement. I’ve got a few years before I drop out of the corporate rat race, perfect time to start building something on the side to keep me busy in my golden years.

I would love to start my own channel just to share my knowledge too. It would be kinda cool to learn the "do's and don't s" of RU-vid but at a makers perspective lol

I started wood working when I moved out to California Stationed on Camp Pendleton. My first project that sold was blanket ladders and they sold like crazy. I mainly sold them during the fall. One huge mistake I would make is always wanting a project to be done faster than it should take. This causing me to cut corners or not wait until everything was completely dry. I soon learned patience!! Thanks for the videos and the support for the military. You’re a real one! Semper Fidelis and God bless
