#6 really is important. When I was a plumber, I would get big jobs that would require large parts purchases prior to beginning the project and more than once I had a commercial customer attempt to stiff the company on the bill. We finally just made it policy that any job over $800 required a 50% down payment for materials at the time of scheduling and it pretty much stopped all the shady customers.

@@Hunterworks If you have a proper LLC or have your home/personal assets legally protected behind a trust, then perhaps you have a point. But you don’t understand risk. Because if you own property or a home or anything your assets are attractive. Nevertheless, a lawsuit that compels you to pay $500/month for eternity and beyond is gonna suck. Basic appropriate liability insurance pretty much guarantees that you will not be exposed to risk because the insurance companies can afford to “fight back” and limit the subsequent liability. Your logic is broken.

Thanks for all your content, Matt, and for the new stuff helping new woodworkers, like me, to get started. My new metal building/workshop is built, but I'm still waiting for electrical and spray foam. In the meantime, I'm starting to work on less time-consuming stuff like cutting boards in my spare time until I can move into my shop. I am a very beginner woodworker and have made a few things like dog crates, living room tables that are also storage boxes. I also work in a lumber store. My question is “where do you buy your lumber? Finding lumber that is straight in big box stores is hard to find. I do buy “cull carts” because they are cheap, but none of that is straight. So I get stuff built, but it is hard and sometimes frustrating! I have learned a lot from your videos and I appreciate the knowledge you share!
@tsstahl
@tsstahl 2 месяца назад
Search for "hard wood lumber dealer" near you. The construction grade lumber is very wet relative to wood ready for furniture. The cull cart gets all the stuff that warps as it dries. However, the cull stuff is great for learning the basics. Oh, and be prepared for sticker shock when you see the price per board foot of quality hard wood. :)

remember, a Job is to pay for what's next. and you are a business of you. these are two sayings that helped guide me and I have been reaching my goals and I have gotten to the place where I have to find my path to my next goal. but here is something that I have learned. a job is back-end loaded risk because everyday you go to work is one day closer to the day they let you go. but starting a business is front-end loaded risk. every day you're open is a day closer to lasting stability.

Re: the Chronicle, I saw that you had a section for making your goals SMART: Specific, Measurable, Assignable, Realistic, and Time-bound. This is key. I work with MBA graduates and business owners who do not understand this or practice this, yet the top, most-profitable companies in the world do it every day. Don't just say "I want..." for a goal. Make each goal SMART, and track your progress to each one. Don't just dream, or make big, bold claims. Lock it down and be specific. For me, I think of the "A" (Assignable) as "Accountable". Who is going to do it, who is responsible for making sure everything needed for success is in place and progress towards the goal is tracked. Great video, this might be my favorite on your whole channel! :thumbs_up:

“I want” or “I wish” or “I’d like to” are not goals- you are correct. “I am going to ____ by next Tuesday” is a goal; everything else is not intent, it’s a wish. Wishing to be like Michael Jordan or Larry Bird - or putting down their work ethic. Which one might bring some of that success?

I want to add to the just start/borrow tools. Talk to family/people you know like friends, coworkers ect. I would talk about wanting to make things, or ask how somebody did whatever. You probably will walk away with some tools. Because woodworkers, or whatever this happened with cars with me too all want more people into their hobbies. And well we all never stop buying tools, so theres always a perfectly good old tool.

After 15 years of luthiery herein Brazil i had to get back to a "formal" job cause we broke, specially after the pandemic years. But Brazil is unfair with the business man that have no connections with "social politics" or "politics schemes". And another unfortunatly point, and that's is really sad in my point of view is that brazilians don't care about quality but price. This cause many manufacture dreams destroyed. And those who remains, like me, that don't give up, struggle em two jobs to keep live our business!! Great video, Matt, thank you for keeping inspiring woodworkers!!!

I've brought a bunch of cheap tools. I need to clear out the garage so I can put benches in there (and modify my late stepdad's old metal workbench) and really get things going. When I start getting some money coming in, I will start buying better tools. But the thing that affects me the most, is I am caring for my mum in a rented house. Once she passes, I have to find a new place. So I am in a place where I want to start making benches, that might not fit into where I go next. The uncertainty of the future is annoying.

At around 17:00 minutes you talk about stove covers. What I'd be interested in learning is how you go about communicating to someone through etsy or facebook market place on the sizing of the product you are selling. For instance was the stove covers a one size fits all, or did you find that you had to request stove size? Also how common is it with selling products online that you have to request further information? Do you find it easier to sell one-size-fits-all products vs products that require further information? Just starting my youtube career and will be moving into my first home with a garage so I will start my own shop as of May. Any information will help greatly. These questions could be a good video idea :)

I just try to be fair. Some people use a formula like Cost of materials plus labor, times 10% or something similar.

One thing I’d recommend as a person starts down this path, is to look into local and federal income tax brackets. Know at what point your revenue demands you be filing that income stream. In my situation, anything over and above $13k annually must be declared and taxes paid accordingly. Anything below $13k… is basically money under the table.

You’re my absolute favorite woodworker on RU-vid! I’ve learned a lot through your videos. I appreciate you keeping God first and spreading the word along with blessings! Do you offer woodworking classes? I’ve done a lot of framing houses in the past and building pallet patio furniture, but it’s been years and I’ve very recently bought some tools and started dipping my toe into building small projects. I would love to eventually start my own business. I would love to take a class if that’s something you would consider. Thanks for the videos! God bless!

SO MANY thumbnails in two days...what, 4 so far? I've heard John H. talk about changing thumbnails and getting various responses. Makes me wonder if I should be doing the same on mine. Great tips. I hadn't seen the journal before...I guess they are on your website. I'll look and see.

I have early access to a new feature YT is working on. You can load 3 thumbnails at once and it will auto rotate them and choose the one that gets the best results.

I wanna get into woodworking. But I'm literally starting from scratch. I have 0 tools and no space. Hopefully, over the next 3 years, I'll build up some tools and get a shed built. But even once I start, it'll never be more than a side hussle to Hopefully pay for more tools. I live in the Scottish Highlands. There is an exceedingly small amount of people here that'll pay for custom woodworking projects. And there's a lot of wood workers. So the market is extremely saturated. And I don't really have much interest in selling small projects online. So I'm guessing I'll make the odd bit of furniture or planters or something and sell then as or when I can 🤣 I'm more interested in learning to do it and learning a skill that I can teach to my kids.

Etsy and locally. Etsy takes time and you have to set the store up a certain way and optimize it for search traffic and recommended traffic. Check out my Etsy video, just search 731 Etsy
