If anyone's doing this on Lollipop, everything is the same EXCEPT that when you reach the "No command" screen YOU NEED TO PRESS THE POWER BUTTON FIRST AND THEN THE VOL UP KEY FOR 2-3 SECS and then let go of both. Cheers.
Worked for me in 2018: Roll-back to 4.4.4 Wipe Cache Disable gesturing settings \ Language & inputs \ Keyboards & inputs methods \ Gboard \ gesture typing Developer tools - disable animations Currents - disable sync Disable Google Play updates
great tip...brought my "bricked" nexus 7 back to life. thank you for the video. it's not as fast as yours but I can use it again and that's a huge plus
2020 and your guide is still very useful! :) Thank you! This device is very old now, but as a media controller (e.g. Chromecast) it's excellent, now! Thank you so much! :)
Thank you Eric. My problem was that I could not open the Nexus7 after swiping. It would just have to be swiped over and over again until it "caught". This fix has fixed my Nexus7! Hooray for you!
My Nexus 7 2012 had already upgraded to Lollipop so it's still not as fast as it originally was, but this helped a lot. It went from 20 time slower than it originally was (not kidding; apps that used to take 10 seconds to load were needing over 3 minutes!) to only 3 times slower (30 seconds or so for the same apps), so this procedure was a 7x improvement. I'm still going to root this thing and put in a custom ROM soon though...
It worked faster afterwards for a short time then reverted right back to being super slow again and not usable. THE PROBLEM IS GOOGLE. If you don't use the majority of those apps and want the table fast reset it to factory. Then follow the instructions and start over, when it is complete open about table and check apps, and you'll probably see none. Download what you want and I also included Kaspersky anti virus for android . Most of what Google apps there are will be outdated, just update the ones you want, then have only Google Play and Google Play services. After you get what you want from Google play then force stop both play and services, and do not allow any more unused Google apps to install on the table. Google will automatically update and install apps if you don't keep those two apps forced off. The tablet will then run very fast, I ended up with Ring alarm, Kaspersky anti virus, Chrome, RU-vid, and Google Play and Google Play Services that I stopped after use to prevent updating and app installs, those were all I needed. now the Nexus 7 table runs as fast as my new one.
On Android 6.0.1 marshmallow, it's the same up to the no command screen where you will hold volume up and power for a few seconds, release volume up, then press it again then release after a second of holding. The menu will appear where you scroll to wipe cache partition, press powder button when you scroll to it and say yes when prompted with the yes or no
My nexus wouldn't update because of all the junk files from previous updates and this cleared up the problems. Thanx so much . Amazing easy fix. I love you. Asus wanted me to pay 180 dollars to help me solve this issue....
O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs. 4:171 Qur'an. 75. The Messiah [‘Iesa (Jesus)], son of Maryam (Mary), was no more than a Messenger; many were the Messengers that passed away before him. His mother [Maryam (Mary)] was a Siddiqah [i.e. she believed in the words of Allah and His Books (see Verse 66:12)]. They both used to eat food (as any other human being, while Allah does not eat). Look how We make the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) clear to them, yet look how they are deluded away (from the truth). 76. Say (O Muhammad to mankind): “How do you worship besides Allah something which has no power either to harm or to benefit you? But it is Allah Who is the All-Hearer, All-Knower.” 77. Say (O Muhammad ): “O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Exceed not the limits in your religion (by believing in something) other than the truth, and do not follow the vain desires of people who went astray in times gone by, and who misled many, and strayed (themselves) from the Right Path.” chapter 5 (75,76,77) Hi, I thought I'd let you know what Allah says in the qur'an in regards to his messenger peace and blessings be upon him. All the best.
@Damon Tsekos In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. 1. Say, “He is God, the One. 2. God, the Absolute. 3. He begets not, nor was He begotten. 4. And there is nothing comparable to Him.”
This was a fantastic fix. It cured my freezing Nexus 7 and its now back to new. I was about to give in and buy something new so I am a very happy person.Well done great job.*********
Thank you, Eric, for showing us how to do this properly. Google's explanation is vague and badly worded: "While holding down the Power button, press and release the Volume Up button once." It should say something like "Simultaneously press the Power and Volume Up buttons for two to three seconds, then release only the Volume Up button." See? Not that difficult to explain.
Thank you! I like that you explained what this is supposed to do, and showed the device afterward. I've seen several videos about this, and none of them took the time to explain that. Very reassuring!
My 2012 Nexus 7 was soooooo slow after it upgraded to Lollipop, that I haven't used it in a few years. I switched out Messenger and Facebook for Messenger Lite and Facebook Lite, but it still was very slow. Just watched your video and followed instructions and it has brought back some of the speed, so i'm happy. Had been looking at new tablets today because I was so disgusted. I know Lollipop is the problem, but am not techy enough to know how to go back to KitKat, so this will help for now. Thank you, Eric.
Worked for a day then the calculator and calendar updated so had to do this again. Best thing to do is take your google tablet down the park and use it as a Frisbee
Lollipop literally crushed my Nexus I came back to android 4.3 as I remember it worked great back then but still it had some bugs and lags. Then I followed your tutorial and now it works very well. Thanks a lot it really helped! :)
I watched another video, turn off location didn't work. Your video worked, thank you for sharing. It's much faster now. I thought I have to donate this tablet. It was so slow and I barely have anything on my tablet. I told my friend, I hate the new update, made my tablet so slow that I stopped using it and got myself an mini iPad.
Just bought a used N7 2012 in good condition, I think this tablet is still better than most budget tablets nowadays. I'll probably run it with Stock Android Kitkat (not Lollipop) or Slimrom
lollypop is absolute crap , I've just done this and its still crap , how has your experience of it been Eric ? , my nexus 7 is bareley useable now even after the bug fix
update on it Eric , after doing a complete erase and reset ( wich took hours ) then a reboot , got up today to find everything is working better than ever before , its like having a brandnew tablet , I was ready to bin it and get a Samsung lol , it only started downloading my apps this afternoon so no need to worry because their all on google play in the "my apps" tab on there :)
thankyou so much for the video!!!this really worked like magic!! i tried it on my motog2 phone and my phone now works like a brand new phone, u saved lots of money by uploading this video thankyou so much!! most useful video on RU-vid. i ll recommend it to others also
Which version of Android was on the tablet during this video? My brain can't quite keep up with the speed of delivery here. I cope better with things that are written down.
I did factory reset, and disabled unnecessary (or unwanted) apps, and bam! Minecraft runs! LOL. Occasionally come back to this video to wipe cache, and runs fast again.
ive just brought a nexus 7 but when i try the volume up and power button to get to the last bit, it doesnt work for me, it just turns the tablet on instead, what am i doing wrong?
It may be faster than before if you didn’t do that before. But it won’t return to the best state because the disk performance is not enough for lollipop. It has only 20~30 MB/s read speed……😢
One note. The very first time you wipe the cache, it takes minutes, not seconds. Do not get impatient but let it finish. I didn't and to several hours of trial and error to recovery. So once you wipe the cache - wait. If you ever do it again - then it takes seconds. If you were to totally reload the Nexus from scratch (that takes developers tools), then the 1st time is again slow. So the slow part is normal.
I have wiped cache on both Nexus 7 2012 & Nexus 2013, two Nexus 5's & a Nexus 9. I have unlocked them to root (except the N9) and reloaded - the Nexus 5 many times. The 1st cache wipe is always long.
No problem. I'm glad it worked. Thanks for watching and sharing the video. :) Also if you are into high quality game reviews then check out my new show, 3 Minute Reviews. All episodes are in a playlist which is in the video description.
Wow, I will try this when I finish replacing the battery, which I'm doing cuz it was so slow to charge and quick to drain. Do you think this would fix the battery issue as well? PS should I be doing this cache wipe on my old Nexus 5 (all devices?) as well? Thanks for the vid!
Eric Carter I haven't updated my Nexus 7 2012 from the original software it came with, Android 4.1 Jellybean, and it still performs well. Google makes the updates to slow down the Nexus 7 2012 for planned obsolescence but I won't fall for their trap.
As you've pointed out, that's what happens when successive update caches bog down the original hardware - my N7 is still on JB and running cyanogenmod and its still as fast as the day I got it.
This "speedup" doesn't last more than a few days. To really make your N7-2012 run like new, you HAVE to do this: 1 - Install Android 6.0.1 AOSP from XDA. 2 - Root it 3 - Install PARROTMOD (the most important step). It is NOT supersimple, but doable. It involves unlocking your bootloader, then installing a new recovery (TWRP), then flashing AOSP, then flashing the root .zip, then flashing parrotmod. But, you'll end up with a Android Marshmallow tablet running at great speed! You can also install parrotmod on Android 4.1 onwards (iirc), but if you're going through all these hoops, better to install android 6 already.
Android 6 isn't made for Nexus 2012. 5.11 is the latest & very choppy best to keep kitkat on it & do not install facebook app, viber & skype as it causes tablet to be more laggy & slow.
It has to do with latest version. I have read countless people complaining about Lollipop running slow on the 1st gen Nexus 7. I would recommend Cyanogen Mod.
Hello......I was following your directions and was doing good until I got the hold power button and top volume button, for 3 seconds, when I let off the volume button it didn't show me the faint writing on the top left, it just spins tiny colored balls, then I see the word Android and then the tablet is back to the 'lock screen' ! any suggestions ? Thanks !!
Will this work with my Asus Google Nexus 7 2nd generation ????....... I noticed that the last 2 weeks now after owning it for around 3-4 years it’s been acting slowly and it freezes every few seconds and then plays in regards to when I’m watching videos. There’s way too much lag even when I’m scrolling up and down or swiping. It’s bad !!!!. I checked my updates and it says that my software is currently up to date. It hasn’t had a software update in a long time. I’d say a year or more. Will this same truck be applied to the second generation that I have ?..... also is it because perhaps I caught a virus or someone hacked into my tablet. My iPhone 8 Plus doesn’t do it at all only my tablet.
FYI, the power back on does not work, it just boots back up after holding the buttons for three seconds. Tried many times, still wont get to that menu to clear cache.
This method works well for some 2012 models. DO NOT UPGRADE to Lollipop as it will be even worse. Also Facebook, Viber & Skype apps also cause the tablet to lag even after you wipe cache. Uninstall them apps & you see tablet run well.
No problem mate. What I did was got a program called Nexus Root Toolkit & then re installed KitKat back but just do not use them apps mentioned above as they eat your memory & cause massive battery drain also.
+DrSysop Hmm. I didn't know you could downgrade like that. I'll probably do it at some point. Thanks alot! Also I'm not sure if you are interested but if you are into gaming then check out my new show 3 Minute Reviews. A link to the playlist is in the description of this video. This week I will also be reviewing Mirrors Edge Catalyst.
Watched several other videos on how to make it faster. Happy to say yours worked the best! Thx! PS. I pity the ppl who has the time in their lives to criticize over mispronounced words...just say'n
Thanks for the tip. I'd previously done a factory reset on the device to no avail. Went through all the steps as you described in the video. Sadly, on my Nexus 7, did not achieve the desired result. Still runs like a slug. :-(
Another way to get the nexus running at full speed is to install beanstalk os and install the open gapps project and then you will have a android marshmallow device running at a great speed.
Hi Great vid Eric, after the reboot and holding volume up and start button it brought me directly to front page after google, my system went to regular page. Not sure why I did hold 3 secs thanks much
+Artists Confer No problem. Also if you want to see me dig into the new iPhone 7 and explain why it is a scandalous upgrade, then check out my latest video. Thanks so much for watching!
im following this right now,im hoping this works because when i first bought my nexus,i loved it,then the update happened and thats when all the trouble started,so i will be right back to let you know how it worked ,see yah soon :)
Mike Terry the lag has sort of been fixed , it dosent crash anymore , its not as fast as the old j.b. , just be prepaired for a lot of frustration when you do the update
While stock KitKat 4.4.4 turned the Nexus 7 2012 into an invalid, Lollipop euthanized it. Thanks to Slimkat on F2FS, this 8yr old tablet has got a new life. I have been using it on Slimkat for the last 3yrs as a stand-by device - checking emails, surfing, using it as a remote for Fire TV, etc. No lag at all. The battery life is much better than stock Kitkat. Standby time with screen off and Wifi On is 48-72hrs even after 8yrs. Unfortunately, the team at Slimrom.org seems to have deleted the page for Nexus 7 2012 "grouper". Only Nexus 7 2013 is listed.
Yeah that works! Well I won't say now my nexus works as fast and good as my iPhone or New android phone but well it's 4 yrs old tablet I don't really expect it to work this way....but it surely made it a lot better.
Hi , I get to 2:16 on your video where the android character with the "No Command" appears, but this fades after one second to leave a blank screen. I re-tried several times with same result.
