This is how to use Google My Maps to make quick, easy, free motorcycle routes. It's a few clicks and dragging lines to make routes that can then be used in any navigation app or device. This is nice, thanks! My garmin doesn't understand kmz/kml files. What do you use to convert them to gpx? So far I've tried "MyGeoData" , "dnrgps" , and "KMZ2GPX" . No luck.

For older devices that need specific files I have always been able to use the free converters like the ones you mentioned. Sorry, I don't have anything here to test on.

Great video! There's a bunch of apps out there that are supposed to be for creating motorcycle routes that just don't work. I should have known Google had the solution. Thanks a bunch for this video, very helpful, and I'll be using this method soon!

Wouldn't it be nice if Google Maps had a feature that actually allowed you to navigate these custom routes! The new H-D Ride Planner has navigation now, so that is what I transitioned to.

I expect there is a way to export the route and import it into google maps on your iPhone. I found out how to save a route on iPhone. Share the directions to your email address and then click on the link in the email on your iPhone and it reassembles the stops but not the route choice. But the order. You can then tap the right route . Took me hours. Half the web instructions were written by morons who advertised they were going to tell you how to save routes but told you how to save maps. They did not know the difference between a route and a map.

Thanks for the video, the secret google app that I didn't know about and even with the video is a major PITA to use due to the lack of "UNDO" and the impossibility to change the waypoint except to start over. You should also mention that KML file is all but useless without yet another application or website to convert KML to actually useful GPX file. Now if you review the Nuviz (RideNuviz.com) hud, the version 1.6 of the firmware actually allows you to import said GPX file and actually navigate directly without using your phone. Disclaimer, it converts the data weirdly and if you don't review the converted ride it will make you loop around to hit that magic waypoint.

You can drag a waypoint anywhere if you make a mistake. As I showed you can double click to delete one. KML works with my app and there are tons of free online converters if you need gpx - big deal.

I gave up on GoogleMaps a long time ago, when they no longer offered such a feature. I tend to create my nav maps in Tyre and then use the GPX (or whatever format I want to use) for the actual navigation. Nice, though, to see them finally giving that functionality back that they removed years ago.

Uh, this isn’t google maps. That’s the nav app. This is google My Maps.

My point being that they used to have this same functionality, but they removed it at a whim, so I moved to another platform designed to do exactly what it did then. But, I can save the files as GPX, KML, KMZ, OV2, ITN, RTE or GZ files. Even though it was easy to share routes with friends using just a link, I lost a lot of saved routes when Google decided they were no longer supporting this. I had a lot of those routes exploring the side roads off the back roads that I really liked. (yes, a bit bitter about it)

Awesome video. Way easier than the app Rever that i use now. How do you save it when you are done plotting and how do you get it from your computer to your phone to get the turn by turn directions

Thank you Bryan, very helpfull. I use Tyre, also free and easy for booking hotel etc since linked to Booking.com, easy to put into TomTom rider. I will definitely also look into Google mymaps.

Hi from the UK I have followed you video and produced a .kml file on my PC do you know of any android apps that will actually use the route to navigate the route (turn by turn) I know Google maps wont and Maps.me shows it as bookmark but there is no start option to use it to navigate (unless I am doing it wrong. Basically I want to plan a route through the country lanes to lead Club runs, the closest I have come is using Google maps and putting in waypoints however the navigation stops at each waypoint, gloves off to click continue!! Thanks

Can you plan a route for a future date? As an example, I'd like to plan a trip that includes Beartooth Pass in NW Wyoming, but it is a seasonal road and currently closed. I can't seem to be able to plan for it .

My problem is the Route keeps being plotted along an alternative Route (the wrong one) & I cannot get the Map to accept the change, so it retains both. Uh …. ? Help would be great.

Awesome Tutorial. Like you, I also use My Maps for planning and export to Scenic for navigation on the Bike but I found that sometimes the import to Scenic is not so smooth. Some directions on Scenic will take a route around several roads in the same town after the import as the roads were close together in the planning phase. Have you found this perhaps, that the route is not 100% as you have plotted it on My Maps in Scenic? If so do you have any advice on this perhaps?

I find that happens in a variety of nav apps. That's why in Scenic, as the last step of import, it asks if it looks OK ro not - you have the chance there to correct anything. Usually it's fine but I've run in to a couple off paths.

Did you purchase the full Scenic app or just the free version? I don't want to waste my time with the credits to download maps and transfer in GoogleMyMaps routes if it ends up costing me a fortune to do so. Planning routes in GoogleMyMaps is pretty easy. I used it the last time I planned a trip to Mont Tremblant in Quebec.

Question... can you “add” roads that aren’t on the Scenic maps? Example: a bridge was opened last October near my house, it’s on Google Maps but hasn’t made it to the Scenic FL map. REVER has a “create route where there are no roads” feature, but I’m not seeing that in Scenic AND it appears that it re-routes my imported routes from Google My Maps to go the long way around... help please Bryan! Thanks

Great advice but when I share it changes it to faster routes. I spent hrs making it then after I shared it, Google switched to faster Any idea what I’m doing wrong?
