I'll give you a shortcut if you were drawn in by the misleading thumbnail. It is not about turning $1,000 into $700,000. It's about investing $1,000 EVERY MONTH into an S&P 500 index fund for fifteen years. At an average return of 10% per year, Tom says that yields $700,000. I'll trust his arithmetic, but this is really about turning $180,000 into $700,000 using a simple DCA into an S&P 500 index over fifteen years, a much more believable proposition.

Great advice if you're younger, say 20s to 40s. When you're older on the cusp of retirement or in retirement, you can't afford a large market drawdown. You might not have enough time left to recover - to get back to even.

I think what's worth mentioning is that professional traders, like legit prop traders have analysts, advanced software, capital, as well as education and training on their side. An individual retail investor trying to day trade / swing trade is bringing a knife to a gunfight, whereas these institutional prop traders are bringing a main battle tank. I bet for every retail investor who beats the market day trading / swing trading, there are dozens who lost a lot of money.

Hello Tom. I watched the majority of this video and it seems like very sound advice. I like your sense of humor and your brutal honesty. My close friend follows you and he somehow took your advice of DCA into the S&P500 and switched it into DCA into Palantir and Tesla. I’m not even sure what to say to him anymore. Your video was well made and gave a lot of solid advice. Maybe you can talk about portfolio risk management and allocation? Because he won’t listen to me. He’s lost a lot of money but just won’t stop buying. He won’t even consider diversification. I even showed him my investing track record and despite me crushing the S&P and QQQ, he says my returns aren’t anything because his 2 stock portfolio will decimate my returns. He follows you, so maybe you can be the voice of authority/reason. Thanks kindly.

Tom, your calculation does not add up. To accumulate 700k in 15 years by investing 1k a month into the S&P, you need around 16.5% return each year, which is a significantly higher annual return than the S&P ever had long-term 🤔 Edit: Ah, 20 years for 700k, now that DOES add up 👍🏻

I was fairly smart with my money, but unlike you, I made minimum wage most of my life. So, not working or working didn't really make a difference since I never really made much money. I have had two jobs where going to work cost me more than to stay home and two jobs where the boss didn't pay enough to meet minimum wage. Sad to think about it all, but it taught me to live on very little and not panic.

Why shouldn’t I just put 100% in Tesla? Serious question. Me panic selling isn’t a concern I’ve been holding solidly and held through a 75% drop to then double down at the 100 lows. Not sure how I never work again with this. I have to keep working for 20 years at least to get to 700k. Then even with all of the 700k in safe investments the interest is not income replacing... The video is fine but the tagline doesn't add up

What I tell people is to invest it what they are interested in; as you will do research in those areas out of pure interest in thise areas, so it woun't seem like work. For example; as someone i terested in technology, I research many areas of technology and will thus learn aboit developments of new drugs, new cancer treatments, developmwnts in computers, A.I., robotics, etc, which will lead me to having a decent idea of what companies to invest in. Researching these companies, reading their financial statements, etc, is also a neccessary step I will due also out of pure interest.

@9:15 I have to disagree out of context. Explaining to investors the effects that traders have on situations is a valuable lesson. I’m a subscriber, I’m 41, and I appreciate your content- however if I were to pick the most traded stocks I own, it would be Tesla and Palantir. To suggest that investors don’t need to factor in 100m+ in average volume is… a nuanced omission.

You said it's simple but then that it's nearly impossible. I agree, not getting into emotional investing is the hardest part and where most people fail. Day trade/ swing on one portfolio. Then go hard on a long term portfolio. Never add into a day trading account and only invest in a long term account on another broker so taxes are easier. The day trading account will only be used for when potential good trades. Like a trap spider, you trade only on days you can fully focus on the market moving with the market. The long term is never trading and only adding into account.

Question...when you mention investing in the S&P 500 you mean companies included in the list or the actual indices (SPY)? I like to do covered call and the SPY would be fantastic...but its expensive to get the 100 shares. Thanks for sharing the wisdom!

sadly the ending was disapointing with palantir and tesla. Yeah they are both good, but you cannot put so much in it. Both are good companies, BUT think about the competition :) New Tesla Models are not good anymore, they just fix and update their programs. And Elon is trolling often. Palantir is okay tho, but now they wont make a big profit in the next time. In these 10 Years? maybe, but 40% on it is bs xD I will buy palantir too, but if its around 9$
